Quantum chaos on edge

Recently, the physics of many-body quantum chaotic systems close to their ground states has come under intensified scrutiny. Such studies are motivated by the emergence of model systems exhibiting chaotic fluctuations throughout the entire spectrum [the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model being a renowned representative] as well as by the physics of holographic principles, which likewise unfold close to ground states. Interpreting the edge of the spectrum as a quantum critical point, here we combine a wide range of analytical and numerical methods to the identification and comprehensive description of two different universality classes: the near edge physics of “sparse” and the near edge of “dense” chaotic systems. The distinction lies in the ratio between the number of a system's random parameters and its Hilbert space dimension, which is exponentially small or algebraically small in the sparse and dense case, respectively. Notable representatives of the two classes are generic chaotic many-body models (sparse) and invariant random matrix ensembles or chaotic gravitational systems (dense). While the two families share identical spectral correlations at energy scales comparable to the level spacing, the density of states and its fluctuations near the edge are different. Considering the SYK model as a representative of the sparse class, we apply a combination of field theory and exact diagonalization to a detailed discussion of its edge spectrum. Conversely, Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity is our reference model for the dense class, where an analysis of the gravitational path integral and random matrix theory reveal universal differences to the sparse class, whose implications for the construction of holographic principles we discuss. Rescuing a black hole in the large- q coupled SYK model

In this paper, we develop a general effective theory for two copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with a time-dependent bilinear coupling. For a quantum quench problem with an initial state of the thermofield double state, we show how the evolution of the system is described by a complex reparametrization field with a classical Hamiltonian. We study correlation functions in this system and compare the large-q theory with the bulk low energy effective theory. In particular, we study the special case of a “rescued black hole”, which describes how a time-evolved thermofield double state can evolve to the ground state of a coupled SYK model by a carefully tuned time-dependent coupling. In the low energy region, there is a holographic dual interpretation, which is a geometry that crosses over from an eternal black hole to a global AdS2 vacuum. This family of geometries allow us to access the bulk region that would be the black hole interior without the rescue process. By comparing the large-q and low energy theory, we find that even in the low energy region the deviation from the low energy theory cannot be neglected if the rescue process starts late. This provides evidence that the low energy effective theory of the bulk fails near the inner horizon of the black hole. We note the possibility of a connection to a two-dimensional analog of the higher-dimensional black hole singularity.

Spin liquid to spin glass crossover in the random quantum Heisenberg magnet

We study quantum SU($M$) spins with all-to-all and random Heisenberg exchange interactions of root-mean-square strength $J$. The $M \rightarrow \infty$ model has a spin liquid ground state with the spinons obeying the equations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Numerical studies of the SU(2) model with $S=1/2$ spins show spin glass order in the ground state, but also display SYK spin liquid behavior in the intermediate frequency spin spectrum. We employ a $1/M$ expansion to describe the crossover from fractionalized fermionic spinons to a confining spin glass state with weak spin glass order $q_{EA}$. The SYK spin liquid behavior persists down to a frequency $\omega_\ast \sim J q_{EA}$, and for $\omega < \omega_\ast$, the spectral density is linear in $\omega$, thus quenching the extensive zero temperature entropy of the spin liquid. Furthermore, the linear $\omega$ spectrum is qualitatively similar to that obtained earlier using bosonic spinons for large $q_{EA}$. We argue that the extensive SYK spin liquid entropy is transformed as $T \rightarrow 0$ to an extensive complexity of the spin glass state.

Excitation spectra of quantum matter without quasiparticles. II. Random t - J models

Here, we present numerical solutions of the spectral functions of large dimension t -J models with random nearest neighbor exchange and global SU(M) spin rotation symmetry. The solutions are obtained from the saddle-point equations of the large dimension limit, followed by the large M limit. The same saddle point equations also apply to the model with all-to-all and random hopping and exchange. Such a t -J model realizes a deconfined critical state proposed as a model for the optimally doped cuprates. The large M theory involves Green’s functions for fractionalized spinons and holons carrying emergent U(1) gauge charges, obeying relations similar to those of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models. The low frequency spectral functions are compared with an analytic analysis of the operator scaling dimensions with good agreement. We also compute the low frequency and temperature behavior of experimentally observable gauge-invariant observables: the electron Green’s function, the local spin susceptibility and the optical conductivity, along with the temperature dependence of the d.c. resistivity. The time reparameterization soft mode (equivalent to the boundary graviton in holographically dual models of two-dimensional quantum gravity) makes important contributions to all observables and provides a linear-in-temperature contribution to the d.c. resistivity.

Replica wormhole and information retrieval in the SYK model coupled to Majorana chains

Motivated by recent studies of the information paradox in (1+1)-D anti-de Sitter spacetime with a bath described by a (1+1)-D conformal field theory, we study the dynamics of second Ŕenyi entropy of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model (χ) coupled to a Majorana chain bath (ψ). The system is prepared in the thermofield double (TFD) state and then evolved by HL + HR. For small system-bath coupling, we find that the second Rényi entropy $S^(2)_{χL,χR}$ of the SYK model undergoes a first order transition during the evolution. In the sense of holographic duality, the long-time solution corresponds to a “replica wormhole”. The transition time corresponds to the Page time of a black hole coupled to a thermal bath. We further study the information scrambling and retrieval by introducing a classical control bit, which controls whether or not we add a perturbation in the SYK system. The mutual information between the bath and the control bit shows a positive jump at the Page time, indicating that the entanglement wedge of the bath includes an island in the holographic bulk.

Size of bulk fermions in the SYK model

The study of quantum gravity in the form of the holographic duality has uncovered and motivated the detailed investigation of various diagnostics of quantum chaos. One such measure is the operator size distribution, which characterizes the size of the support region of an operator and its evolution under Heisenberg evolution. In this work, we examine the role of the operator size distribution in holographic duality for the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Using an explicit construction of AdS 2 bulk fermion operators in a putative dual of the low temperature SYK model, we study the operator size distribution of the boundary and bulk fermions. Our result provides a direct derivation of the relationship between (effective) operator size of both the boundary and bulk fermions and bulk SL(2;$\mathbb{R}$) generators.

Thermalization at low temperatures via weakly damped multisite baths

We study the thermalization properties of one-dimensional open quantum systems coupled to baths at their boundary. The baths are driven to their thermal states via Lindblad operators, while the system undergoes Hamiltonian dynamics. We specifically consider multisite baths and investigate the extent to which the late-time steady state resembles a Gibbs state at some controllable temperature set by the baths. We study three models: a noninteracting fermion model accessible via free-fermion technology, and two interacting models, the XZ model and the chiral clock model, which are accessible via tensor network methods. We show that, by tuning towards the weak coupling and slow relaxation limits, one can engineer low temperatures in the bulk of the system provided the bath size is big enough. Here, we use this capability to study energy transport in the XZ model at lower temperatures than previously reported. Our work paves the way for future studies of interacting open quantum systems at low temperatures.

Solvable theory of a strange metal at the breakdown of a heavy Fermi liquid

In this work, we introduce an effective theory for quantum critical points (QCPs) in heavy-fermion systems, involving a change in carrier density without symmetry breaking. Our theory captures a strongly coupled metallic QCP, leading to robust marginal Fermi-liquid transport phenomenology, and associated linear in temperature (T) "strange metal" resistivity, all within a controlled large-N limit. In the parameter regime of strong damping of emergent bosonic excitations, the QCP also displays a near-universal "Planckian" transport lifetime τ tr ~ℏ/(k B T). This is contrasted with the conventional so-called "slave boson" theory of the Kondo breakdown, where the large-N limit describes a weak coupling fixed point and nontrivial transport behavior may only be obtained through uncontrolled 1/N corrections. We also compute the weak-field Hall coefficient within the effective model as the system is tuned across the transition. We then find that, between the two plateaus reflecting the different carrier densities in the two Fermi-liquid phases, the Hall coefficient can develop a peak in the critical crossover regime, like in recent experimental findings, in the parameter regime of weak boson damping.

Pair Density Wave Order from Electron Repulsion

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconductor whose order parameter is a periodic function of space, without an accompanying spatially uniform component. Since PDWs are not the outcome of a weak-coupling instability of a Fermi liquid, a generic pairing mechanism for PDW order has remained elusive. Here, we describe and solve models having robust PDW phases. To access the intermediate coupling limit, we invoke large-$N$ limits of Fermi liquids with repulsive BCS interactions that admit saddle point solutions. We show that the requirements for long-range PDW order are that the repulsive BCS couplings must be nonmonotonic in space and that their strength must exceed a threshold value. We obtain a phase diagram with both finite temperature transitions to PDW order and a $T = 0$ quantum critical point, where non-Fermi liquid behavior occurs.

Out-of-time-order correlators and Lyapunov exponents in sparse SYK

We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to study out-of-time order correlators (OTOCs) in the sparse Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We find that at a given order of N, the standard result for the q-local, all-to-all SYK, obtained through the sum over ladder diagrams, is corrected by a series in the sparsity parameter, k. We present an algorithm to sum the diagrams at any given order of 1/(kq) n . We also study OTOCs numerically as a function of the sparsity parameter and determine the Lyapunov exponent. We find that numerical stability when extracting the Lyapunov exponent requires averaging over a massive number of realizations. This trade-off between the efficiency of the sparse model and consistent behavior at finite N becomes more significant for larger values of N.

Thermoelectric power of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev islands: Probing Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in quantum matter experiments

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes electrons with random and all-to-all interactions and realizes a many-body state without quasiparticle excitations and a nonvanishing extensive entropy $S_0$ in the zero-temperature limit. Its low-energy theory coincides with the low-energy theory of near-extremal charged black holes with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $S_0$. Several mesoscopic experimental configurations realizing SYK quantum dynamics over a significant intermediate temperature scale have been proposed. We investigate quantum thermoelectric transport in such configurations and describe low-temperature crossovers out of SYK criticality into regimes either with Fermi liquid behavior, with a Coulomb blockade, or criticality associated with Schwarzian quantum gravity fluctuations. In this work, our results show that thermopower measurements can serve as a direct probe for $S_0$.

Superconductivity from Luttinger surfaces: Emergent Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev physics with infinite-body interactions

The pairing of two electrons on a Fermi surface due to an infinitesimal attraction between them always results in a superconducting instability at zero temperature (T = 0). The equivalent question of pairing instability on a Luttinger surface (LS)—190a contour of zeros of the propagator—instead leads to a quantum critical point (QCP) that separates a non-Fermi liquid and superconductor. A surprising and little understood aspect of pair fluctuations at this QCP is that their thermodynamics maps to that of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the strong coupling limit. Here, we offer a simple justification for this mapping by demonstrating that (i) LS models share the reparametrization symmetry of the q → ∞ SYK model with q-body interactions close to the LS, and (ii) the enforcement of gauge invariance results in a $\frac{1}{√τ}$ (τ ~ T -1 ) behavior of the fluctuation propagator near the QCP, as is the feature of SYK conformal Green functions, but leaves the overall form of the free energy map robust.

Toward a classification of PT-symmetric quantum systems: From dissipative dynamics to topology and wormholes

Studies of many-body non-Hermitian parity-time (PT)-symmetric quantum systems are attracting a lot of interest due to their relevance in research areas ranging from quantum optics and continuously monitored dynamics to Euclidean wormholes in quantum gravity and dissipative quantum chaos. While a symmetry classification of non-Hermitian systems leads to 38 universality classes, we show that, under certain conditions, PT-symmetric systems are grouped into 24 universality classes. We identify 14 of them in a coupled two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and confirm the classification by spectral analysis using exact diagonalization techniques. Intriguingly, in 4 of these 14 universality classes, AIII ν , BDI ν † , BDI + + ν , and CI − − ν , we identify a basis in which the SYK Hamiltonian has a block structure in which some blocks are rectangular, with ν ∈ N the difference between the number of rows and columns. We show analytically that this feature leads to the existence of ν robust purely eigenvalues, whose level statistics follow the predictions of Hermitian random matrix theory for classes A, AI, BDI, and CI, respectively. We have recently found that this ν is a topological invariant, so these classes are topological. By contrast, nontopological real eigenvalues display a crossover between Hermitian and non-Hermitian level statistics. Similarly to the case of Lindbladian dynamics, the reduction of universality classes leads to unexpected results, such as the absence of Kramers degeneracy in a given sector of the theory. Another novel feature of the classification scheme is that different sectors of the PT-symmetric Hamiltonian may have different symmetries. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

A symmetry algebra in double-scaled SYK

The double-scaled limit of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model takes the number of fermions and their interaction number to infinity in a coordinated way. In this limit, two entangled copies of the SYK model have a bulk description of sorts known as the “chord Hilbert space”. We analyze a symmetry algebra acting on this Hilbert space, generated by the two Hamiltonians together with a two-sided operator known as the chord number. This algebra is a deformation of the JT gravitational algebra, and it contains a subalgebra that is a deformation of the \mathfrak{sl}_2 𝔰 𝔩 2 near-horizon symmetries. The subalgebra has finite-dimensional unitary representations corresponding to matter moving around in a discrete Einstein-Rosen bridge. In a semiclassical limit the discreteness disappears and the subalgebra simplifies to \mathfrak{sl}_2 𝔰 𝔩 2 , but with a non-standard action on the boundary time coordinate. One can make the action of \mathfrak{sl}_2 𝔰 𝔩 2 algebra more standard at the cost of extending the boundary circle to include some “fake” portions. Such fake portions also accommodate certain subtle states that survive the semi-classical limit, despite oscillating on the scale of discreteness. We discuss applications of this algebra, including sub-maximal chaos, the traversable wormhole protocol, and a two-sided OPE.

Long-range wormhole teleportation

We extend the protocol of Gao and Jafferis arXiv:1911.07416 to allow wormhole teleportation between two entangled copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model communicating only through a classical channel. We demonstrate in finite $N$ simulations that the protocol exhibits the characteristic holographic features of wormhole teleportation discussed and summarized in Jafferis et al. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05424-3 . We review and exhibit in detail how these holographic features relate to size winding which, as first shown by Brown et al. arXiv:1911.06314 and Nezami et al. arXiv:2102.01064, encodes a dual description of wormhole teleportation.

Pairing instability on a Luttinger surface: A non-Fermi liquid to superconductor transition and its Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dual

Superconductivity results from an instability of the Fermi surface—contour of poles of the single-particle propagator—to an infinitesimally small attraction between electrons. Here, we instead discuss the analogous problem on a model Luttinger surface, or contour of zeros of the Green function. At zero temperature ($β → \infty$) and a critical interaction strength ($u_{c∞}$) characterized by the residue of self-energy pole, we find that the pair susceptibility diverges leading to a superconducting instability. We evaluate the pair fluctuation partition function and find that the spectral density in the normal state has an interaction-driven, power-law $\frac{1}{\sqrt{ω}}$ type, van-Hove singularity (vHS), indicating non-Fermi liquid (NFL) physics. Crucially, in the strong coupling limit ($βu \gg 1$), the leading-order fluctuation free-energy terms in the normal state of this NFL-SC transition resembles the equivalent [$\textit{O}(1)$] terms of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. This free-energy contribution takes a simple form $–βF = βu_{c∞} – γ \text{ln}(βu_{c∞}$), where $\gamma$ is a constant equal to $\frac{1}{2}$. Weak impurity scattering ($τ \gg β^{–1}$) leaves the low-energy spectral density unaffected but leads to an interaction-driven enhancement of superconductivity. Our results in this work shed light on the role played by order-parameter fluctuations in providing the key missing link between Mott physics and strongly coupled toy models exhibiting gravity duals.
