Discovery of the double Doppler-shifted emission-line systems in the X-ray spectrum of SS 433

We have used the CCD X-ray spectrometers on ASCA and resolved the X-ray emission line from the jet of SS 433 both into Doppler-shifted components with two distinct velocities, and into emission from different ionization states of iron, i.e., Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. This is the first direct detection of the two Doppler shifted beams in the X-ray spectra of SS 433 and allows the radial velocity of the jet along the line of sight to be determined with an accuracy comparable to the optical spectroscopy. We also found pairs of emission lines from other atomic species, such as ionized silicon and sulfur, with the Doppler shifts consistent with each other. This confirms the origin of the X-ray emission in the high temperature plasma in the jets.

Search for gamma-ray emission lines from SS 433: 2: 1980-1989

We have searched through the Solar Maximum Mission satellite gamma-ray spectrometer database for evidence of red and blue Doppler-shifted 1.37 MeV (24)Mg* nuclear lines. The data were obtained between 1980 and 1989 and span a total of 720 days when SS 433 was in the field of view. No evidence of Doppler-shifted line emission was found in any of our spectra. The range of 3 sigma upper limits for individual 9 day integration periods was (0.8-2.4) x 10(exp -3) photons/sq cm/s for the blue beam, encompassing the approximately 1.5 MeV feature reported by Lamb et al., and (0.2-2.1) x 10(exp -3) photons/sq cm/s for the red beam, encompassing the reported approximately 1.2 MeV feature. The average 3 sigma upper limit in each beam for shifted 1.37 MeV was 1.5 x 10(exp -3) photons/sq cm/s for single 9 day integration. The 3 sigma upper limits over 56 9 day integration intervals (504 days) for the red beam and 69 intervals (621 days) for the blue beam are 1.2 x 10(exp -4) photons/sq cm/s. The new limits can be reconciled with the HEAO 3 results only if SS 433 emits gamma rays at or above the SMM sensitivity limit on rare occasions due to variable physical conditions in the system.

XTE Proposal #20102--"SS 433's High Energy Spectrum"

We observed the jet-producing compact binary system SS 433 with RXTE during three multiwavelength campaigns, the first in conjunction with ASCA observations, the second simultaneous with a VLA-VLBA-MERLIN campaign, and the third associated with a Nobeyama millimeter-band campaign. All these campaigns included optical observations. Occurring at different jet precession and binary phases, the observations also monitored the system during a radio flare. The data provide SS 433's X-ray spectrum over more than an energy decade, and track the spectral variations as the X-ray source was partially eclipsed. The continuum can be modeled as a power law with an exponential cutoff, which can be detected to approximately 50 keV. Strong line emission is evident in the 5-10 keV range which can be modeled as a broad line whose energy is precession independent and a narrow line whose energy does vary with jet precession phase; this line model is clearly an over simplification since the PCA does not have sufficient energy resolution to detect the lines ASCA observed. The eclipses are deeper at high energy and at jet precession phases when the jets are more inclined towards and away from us. A large radio flare occurred between two sets of X-ray monitoring observations; an X-ray observation at the peak of the flare found a softer spectrum with a flux approximately 1/3 that of the quiescent level.

Scale Model Acoustic Test Validation of IOP-SS Water Prediction using Loci-STREAM-VoF

The Scale Model Acoustic Test (SMAT) is a 5% scale test of the Space Launch System (SLS), which is currently being designed at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). SMAT consists of a 5% scale representation of the ignition overpressure sound-suppression system (IOP-SS) that is being tested to quantify the water flow and induced air entrainment in and around the mobile launcher exhaust hole. This data will be compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using the newly developed Loci-STREAM Volume of Fluid (VoF) methods. Compressible and incompressible VoF methods have been formulated, and are currently being used to simulate the water flow of SMAT IOP-SS. The test data will be used to qualitatively and quantitatively assess and validate the VoF methods.

Environmental Impact Assessment of Lithium Recovery from Geothermal Brines in the SS-KGRA: An Overview

There is increasing interest in securing a reliable, domestic source of lithium in the United States to support an electrified grid and energy secure future. The Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area (SS-KGRA) has garnered attention for this purpose due to the abundance of lithium in brines brought to the surface for geothermal energy production in this region. Geothermal production from this field is already expected to grow from the current 400 MWe to 920 MWe in the next 3-4 years with a potential total geothermal capacity in the region estimated at nearly 2,950 MWe. With this growth, there is potential for construction and operation of new direct lithium recovery and processing facilities to meet domestic demands for lithium. In this work, we estimate the potential impact of geothermal expansion and lithium extraction in the SS-KGRA on water use, direct air emissions from facilities, and solid waste production and management.

SS-HORSE extension of the no-core shell model: Application to resonances in He 7

Theoretical ab initio studies of resonances in the unbound 7 He nucleus are presented. We perform no-core shell-model calculations with NN interactions Daejeon16 and JISP16 and utilize the SS-HORSE method to calculate the S matrix for two-body channels n + 6 He and n + 6 He* with 6He respectively in the ground and excited 2 + states as well as for the four-body democratic decay channel 4 He + n + n + n. The resonant energies and widths are obtained by numerical location of the S-matrix poles. Here, we describe all experimentally known 7 He resonances and suggest an interpretation of an observed wide resonance of unknown spin-parity.

Microstructure & Mechanical Properties of Scaled Thermally Aged LPBF 316H SS Builds

As part of the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies program’s mission to accelerate qualification of advanced manufacturing pathways for nuclear applications, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) 316H stainless steel (SS) has been selected as a model system to develop a rapid code case framework. This effort directly addresses the grand challenges of (1)expanding the limited portfolio of materials currently codified for elevated-temperature nuclear structural service under Section III, Division 5of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code; and (2) significantly reducing qualification timelines that traditionally exceed a decade. The strategic importance of LPBF 316H lies in its immediate industrial relevance, existing data foundation from wrought 316H, and alignment with ongoing code case development for LPBF 316L.Prior work revealed accelerated precipitation of deleterious secondary phases and reduced creep ductility in as-printed LPBF 316H. Building on that prior research, FY2025activities focused on establishing an understanding of the key failure mechanisms of crept 316H specimens to aid in code case development and on evaluating stress relief (SR) parameters on the high-temperature performance and thermal aging-induced degradation of tensile and fracture behavior in LPBF316H.

Effect of Preparation Conditions of Fe@SiO2 Catalyst on Its Structure Using High-Pressure Activity Studies in a 3D-Printed SS Microreactor

Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) in a 3D-printed stainless steel (SS) microchannel microreactor was investigated using Fe@SiO2 catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by two different techniques: one pot (OP) and autoclave (AC). The mesoporous structure of the two catalysts, Fe@SiO2 (OP) and Fe@SiO2 (AC), ensured a large contact area between the reactants and the catalyst. They were characterized by N2 physisorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis–differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC) techniques. The AC catalyst had a clear core–shell structure and showed a much greater surface area than that prepared by the OP method. The activities of the catalysts in terms of FTS were studied in the 200–350 °C temperature range at 20-bar pressure with a H2/CO molar ratio of 2:1. The Fe@SiO2 (AC) catalyst showed higher selectivity and higher CO conversion to olefins than Fe@SiO2 (OP). Stability studies of both catalysts were carried out for 30 h at 320 °C at 20 bar with a feed gas molar ratio of 2:1. The Fe@SiO2 (AC) catalyst showed higher stability and yielded consistent CO conversion compared to the Fe@SiO2 (OP) catalyst.

Effect of Fe on Co-Based SiO2Al2O3 Mixed Support Catalyst for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis in 3D-Printed SS Microchannel Microreactor

This research explores the effect of a composite support of SiO2 and Al2O3 with Fe and Co incorporated as catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) using a 3D-printed stainless steel (SS) microchannel microreactor. Two mesoporous catalysts, FeCo/SiO2Al2O3 and Co/SiO2Al2O3, were synthesized via a one-pot (OP) method and extensively characterized using N2 physisorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR, TGA-DSC, FTIR, and XPS. H2-TPR results revealed that the synthesis method significantly affected the reducibility of metal oxides, thereby influencing the formation of active FTS sites. SEM-EDS and TEM further revealed a well-defined hexagonal matrix with a porous surface morphology and uniform metal ion distribution. FTS reactions, carried out in the 200–350 °C temperature range at 20 bar with a H2/CO molar ratio of 2:1, exhibited the highest activity for FeCo/SiO2Al2O3, with up to 80% CO conversion. Long-term stability was evaluated by monitoring the catalyst performance for 30 h on stream at 320 °C under identical reaction conditions. The catalyst was initially active for the methanation reaction for up to 15 h, after which the selectivity for CH4 declined. Correspondingly, the C4+ selectivity increased after 15 h of time-on-stream, indicating a shift in the product distribution toward longer-chain hydrocarbons. This trend suggests that the catalyst undergoes gradual activation or restructuring under reaction conditions, which enhances chain growth over time. The increase in C4+ products may be attributed to the stabilization of the active sites and suppression of methane or light hydrocarbon formation.
