The Mariner Mars 1971 gimbal actuator

The actuator that will point the gimbaled engine, thus performing the autopilot actuation function for the Mariner Mars 1971 spacecraft, is described. The gimbaled engine has two axes of freedom, providing two-axis control to the spacecraft. Motion for the two axes is provided by identical and interchangeable actuators-gearless electromechanical linear servomechanisms. Each actuator is designed to have a long service life in the space environment and to be able to function at speeds ranging from hours per cycle to cycles per second.

Active optics for space astronomy.

Discussion of the segmented and deformable active optics approaches underlying some of the modern electrooptical techniques that are to be used in the design of future generations of giant-aperture orbital space telescopes. Combinations of laser interferometry and precise servomechanisms are shown to make possible the solution of such key problems of large monolithic mirrors in orbit as weight, thermal distortion, launchability, and material stability. The applicability of these active optics approaches to future giant-aperture space astronomy systems in the 200-inch to 400-inch diameter range is reviewed.

Role of stretch reflex in voluntary movements

The stretch reflex is often described as a spinal servomechanism, a device for assisting in the regulation of muscle length. Observation of the EMG response to mechanical interruption of voluntary movements fails to demonstrate a significant role for spinal reflexes at 40 msec latency. Two functional responses with latencies of 120 msec and 200 msec, implying supraspinal mediation, are observed.

A method for compensating on-off relay control systems

A method is proposed for adjusting the characteristics of an on-off relay or contactor servomechanism to make it behave as a positive hysteresis relay intended to stabilize a control system. In this method, the nonlinear portion of the system, instead of the linear portion, is shaped by adding a positive hysteresis circuit to the system. A servomotor system using a typical relay for position control is studied as an application of the proposed method. It is shown that since the synthesis is mainly to improve the nonlinear characteristics of the on-off relay, the method will not affect the characteristics of other elements in the system, which is indispensable to the control of space vehicles.

Experiments in the correction of mirror figures via force deformation

The prospect of placing large astronomical telescopes in earth orbit, free of atmospheric degradations, has created a need for ultrahigh-quality large optics. Large mirrors, several meters in diameter, must be produced and maintained with a surface quality that is an order of magnitude better than that typically used in terrestrial telescopes. This paper describes the experimental development of automatic control techniques for correcting optical surfaces to a precision of 0.01 microns rms. The approach consists of interferometrically measuring the mirror figure error and then, using servomechanisms, push or pull on the back surface of the mirror to reform the optical surface

Eye movements - On-line measurement, analysis, and control

The paper outlines the plans and progress related to the development of a Programmed Eye-track Recording System and Eye-coupled Ubiquitous Scene-generator known by the acronym PERSEUS. Particular attention is given to the design and implementation of a computer-based real-time eye-tracking system with associated digital scenic display capability. The accurate eye-tracker developed by Cornsweet and Crane (1973) is selected for this purpose. The discussion covers automatic detection of fixations and saccades, automatic scanpath analysis, fixation-conditional stimulation, and digital scene generation. The all-digital approach to scenic simulation not only eliminates the camera optics and electromechanical servomechanisms of TV-model systems of simulation but also opens the way to the virtually unlimited sequencing of data-base contents and perspectives thereof.

Control logic to track the outputs of a command generator or randomly forced target

A procedure is presented for synthesizing time-invariant control logic to cause the outputs of a linear plant to track the outputs of an unforced (or randomly forced) linear dynamic system. The control logic uses feed-forward of the reference system state variables and feedback of the plant state variables. The feed-forward gains are obtained from the solution of a linear algebraic matrix equation of the Liapunov type. The feedback gains are the usual regulator gains, determined to stabilize (or augment the stability of) the plant, possibly including integral control. The method is applied here to the design of control logic for a second-order servomechanism to follow a linearly increasing (ramp) signal, an unstable third-order system with two controls to track two separate ramp signals, and a sixth-order system with two controls to track a constant signal and an exponentially decreasing signal (aircraft landing-flare or glide-slope-capture with constant velocity).

Automated syringe sampler

A number of sampling services are disposed in a rack which slides into a housing. In response to a signal from an antenna, the circutry elements are activated which provide power individually, collectively, or selectively to a servomechanism thereby moving an actuator arm and the attached jawed bracket supporting an evaculated tube towards a stationary needle. One open end of the needle extends through the side wall of a conduit to the interior and the other open end is maintained within the protective sleeve, supported by a bifurcated bracket. A septum in punctured by the end of the needle within the sleeve and a sample of the fluid medium in the conduit flows through the needle and is transferred to a tube. The signal to the servo is then reversed and the actuator arm moves the tube back to its original position permitting the septum to expand and seal the hole made by the needle. The jawed bracket is attached by pivot to the actuator to facilitate tube replacement.

Low Speed Control for Automatic Welding

Amplifier module allows rotating positioner of automatic welding machine to operate at speeds below normal range. Low speeds are precisely regulated by a servomechanism as are normal-range speeds. Addition of module to standard welding machine makes it unnecessary to purchase new equipment for low-speed welding.

Automation of the longwall mining system

Cost effective, safe, and technologically sound applications of automation technology to underground coal mining were identified. The longwall analysis commenced with a general search for government and industry experience of mining automation technology. A brief industry survey was conducted to identify longwall operational, safety, and design problems. The prime automation candidates resulting from the industry experience and survey were: (1) the shearer operation, (2) shield and conveyor pan line advance, (3) a management information system to allow improved mine logistics support, and (4) component fault isolation and diagnostics to reduce untimely maintenance delays. A system network analysis indicated that a 40% improvement in productivity was feasible if system delays associated with all of the above four areas were removed. A technology assessment and conceptual system design of each of the four automation candidate areas showed that state of the art digital computer, servomechanism, and actuator technologies could be applied to automate the longwall system.

Design and evaluation of control systems for large communications satellites

Control techniques for future large flexible spacecraft are developed. Control design and analysis are supported by a comprehensive CAD system. The proposed operational mobile communications satellite (OMSAT) featuring a 44 m offset fed antenna is used as target application. Requirements for satellite attitude control and communications beam pointing are defined. The following control methods are applied to the system: standard linear optimal regulator (LOR) with Luenberger observer, LOR/observer with selective spill-over suppression, frequency shaped LOR, LOR with closed-loop order reduction by cost decoupling, and robust servomechanism.

A Study on the Control of Third Generation Spacecraft

An overview of some studies which have recently been carried out on the control of third generation spcecraft, as modelled by the MSAT space vehicle configuration, is made. This spacecraft is highly nonsymmetrical and has appendages which cannot in general be assumed to be rigid. In particular, it is desired to design a controller for MSAT which stabilizes the system and satisfies certain attitude control, shape control, and possibly stationkeeping requirements; in addition, it is desired that the resultant controller should be robust and avoid any undesirable spill over effects. In addition, the controller obtained should have minimum complexity. The method of solution adopted to solve this class of problems is to formulate the problem as a robust servomechanism problem, and thence to obtain existence conditions and a controller characterization to solve the problem. The final controller obtained for MSAT has a distributed control configuration and appears to be quite satisfactory.

An alternate fine guidance sensor for the Space Telescope

Design features and the performance envelope of an alternate fine guidance sensor for the Space Telescope are delineated. A Digicon sensor, which requires focusing of a star image on the sensor, was selected as the alternate for the Koesters prism interferometer originally chosen. Optical elements scan the focal plane and are connected to star selecter servomechanisms. A 5 sq arcsec FOV serves as input, and guide stars have been identified to assure a 0.95 probability that one will always be present. The Digicon will permit pointing by 14.5 visual magnitude stars with errors kept below 0.004 arcsec. Guide star acquisition will be effected in the bang-bang mode with a state feedback in the linear area of the instrument error function. Simulations have demonstrated a satisfactory lock-on to stars down to 19th magnitude.

Development of a facility using robotics for testing automation of inertial instruments

The Integrated Robotics System Simulation (ROBSIM) was used to evaluate the performance of the PUMA 560 arm as applied to testing of inertial sensors. Results of this effort were used in the design and development of a feasibility test environment using a PUMA 560 arm. The implemented facility demonstrated the ability to perform conventional static inertial instrument tests (rotation and tumble). The facility included an efficient data acquisitions capability along with a precision test servomechanism function resulting in various data presentations which are included in the paper. Analysis of inertial instrument testing accuracy, repeatability and noise characteristics are provided for the PUMA 560 as well as for other possible commercial arm configurations. Another integral aspect of the effort was an in-depth economic analysis and comparison of robot arm testing versus use of contemporary precision test equipment.
