6 centimeter observations of solar active regions with 6 sec resolution

We have used the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope for observations of solar active regions at 6 cm during 1974 May 8-10. The particular problems of using a sidereal instrument for solar observations are discussed. Maps of total intensity and circular polarization were obtained for four active regions with sunspots and a plage region; the linear polarization was below the noise limit. The brightest components of the 6 cm emission are associated with sunspots, while weaker components are associated with the plage magnetic fields, both longitudinal and transverse. An inversion of the sense of circular polarization was observed in the preceding part of a region with bipolar magnetic-field structure, about two days after the region passed through the central meridian. Nine bursts were also observed, and their one-dimensional positions with respect to the associated active regions are given.

Synthesized map of a solar filament at 6 cm with approximately 15 arc sec resolution

Radio telescope observations have been used to provide the first synthesized map of a filament at 6 cm with angular resolution of about 15 arcsec. The 'dirty' map of the north limb of the sun is shown along with the dirty map of the residual after subtracting the three component least squares model. There is very good correspondence between the radio contours and the H alpha filament; the darkest feature of the filament has a radio temperature depression of 7500 plus or minus 1500 K, and the corresponding brightness temperature of the filament is 12500 plus or minus 1500 K. It is concluded that for this particular filament the radio size is not larger than the optical one.

Signs of interaction of the NGC 1275 nucleus with the high-velocity system according to 0.7 sec seeing observations

The nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1275 was observed in the B system on 1 December 1989 with seeing 0, 7 seconds using the Zeiss-1000 telescope on Mount Majdanak in Central Asia. Special methods of processing reveal low-contrast details. The nucleus and circumnucleus are stretched in NW-SE direction. There are two narrow filaments near the nucleus in position angles roughly 340 degrees and 320 degrees. The first is directed near the radio jet of the nucleus, the second has broken details curved to the NW or toward the high-velocity system of NGC 1275.

A 3-D CFD Analysis of the Space Shuttle RSRM With Propellant Fins @ 1 sec. Burn-Back

In this study 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) runs have been made for the Space Shuttle RSRM using 2 different grids and 4 different turbulent models, which were the Standard KE, the RNG KE, the Realizable KE, and the Reynolds stress model. The RSRM forward segment consists of 11 fins. By taking advantage of the forward fin symmetry only half of one fin along the axis had to be used in making the grid. This meant that the 3-D model consisted of a pie slice that encompassed 1/22nd of the motor circumference and went along the axis of the entire motor. The 3-D flow patterns in the forward fin region are of particular interest. Close inspection of these flow patterns indicate that 2 counter-rotating axial vortices emerge from each submerged solid propellant fin. Thus, the 3-D CFD analysis allows insight into complicated internal motor flow patterns that are not available from the simpler 2-D axi-symmetric studies. In addition, a comparison is made between the 3-D bore pressure drop and the 2-D axi-symmetric pressure drop.

Deriving Tools from Real-time Runs: A New CCMC Support for SEC and AFWA

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) is a US inter-agency activity aiming at research in support of the generation of advanced space weather models. As one of its main functions. the CCMC provides to researchers the use of space science models, even if they are not model owners themselves. The second focus of CCMC activities is on validation and verification of space weather models. and on the transition of appropriate models to space weather forecast centers. As part of the latter activity. the CCMC develops real-time simulation systems that stress models through routine execution. A by-product of these real-time calculations is the ability to derive model products, which may be useful for space weather operators. After consultations with NOA/SEC and with AFWA, CCMC has developed a set of tools as a first step to make real-time model output useful to forecast centers. In this presentation, we will discuss the motivation for this activity, the actions taken so far, and options for future tools from model output.

Deriving Tools from Real-Time Runs: A New CCMC Support for SEC and AFWA

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) is a US inter-agency activity aiming at research in support of the generation of advanced space weather models. As one of its main functions, the CCMC provides to researchers the use of space science models, even if they are not model owners themselves. In particular, the CCMC provides to the research community the execution of "runs-on-request" for specific events of interest to space science researchers. Through this activity and the concurrent development of advanced visualization tools, CCMC provides, to the general science community, unprecedented access to a large number of state-of-the-art research models. CCMC houses models that cover the entire domain from the Sun to the Earth. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of CCMC modeling services that are available to support activities at the Space Environment Center, or at the Air Force Weather Agency.

High-Performance Bipropellant Engine

TRW, under contract to the NASA Lewis Research Center, has successfully completed over 10 000 sec of testing of a rhenium thrust chamber manufactured via a new-generation powder metallurgy. High performance was achieved for two different propellants, N2O4- N2H4 and N2O4 -MMH. TRW conducted 44 tests with N2O4-N2H4, accumulating 5230 sec of operating time with maximum burn times of 600 sec and a specific impulse Isp of 333 sec. Seventeen tests were conducted with N2O4-MMH for an additional 4789 sec and a maximum Isp of 324 sec, with a maximum firing duration of 700 sec. Together, the 61 tests totalled 10 019 sec of operating time, with the chamber remaining in excellent condition. Of these tests, 11 lasted 600 to 700 sec. The performance of radiation-cooled rocket engines is limited by their operating temperature. For the past two to three decades, the majority of radiation-cooled rockets were composed of a high-temperature niobium alloy (C103) with a disilicide oxide coating (R512) for oxidation resistance. The R512 coating practically limits the operating temperature to 1370 C. For the Earth-storable bipropellants commonly used in satellite and spacecraft propulsion systems, a significant amount of fuel film cooling is needed. The large film-cooling requirement extracts a large penalty in performance from incomplete mixing and combustion. A material system with a higher temperature capability has been matured to the point where engines are being readied for flight, particularly the 100-lb-thrust class engine. This system has powder rhenium (Re) as a substrate material with an iridium (Ir) oxidation-resistant coating. Again, the operating temperature is limited by the coating; however, Ir is capable of long-life operation at 2200 C. For Earth-storable bipropellants, this allows for the virtual elimination of fuel film cooling (some film cooling is used for thermal control of the head end). This has resulted in significant increases in specific impulse performance (15 to 20 sec). To determine the merits of a powder rhenium thrust chamber, Lewis On-Board Propulsion Branch directed TRW (under the Space Storable Rocket Technology Program and the High Pressure Earth Storable Rocket Technology Program) to design, fabricate, and test an engineering model to serve as a technology demonstrator.

AO 0235+164 and Surrounding Field: Surprising HST Results

Results obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope on the highly variable radio, x-ray, and gamma-ray emitting QSO (or BL Lac object) AO 0235 + 164 are presented and analyzed. WFPC2 images were obtained in 1994 June, when AO 0235 + 164 was bright (m approx. 17), and the results are described in Sec. 3. After subtraction of the PSF of the QSO, hereafter called AO following the nomenclature of Yanny et al. (1989), the companion object named A, 2 sec south of AO, is discovered not to be an elliptical galaxy as hypothesized earlier, but to be an AGN object, with a central UV-bright point-source nucleus and faint surrounding nebulosity extending to AO. The second companion object 1.3 sec east of AO discovered by Yanny et al. (1989) and named object Al, appears more like a normal spiral galaxy. We have measured the positions, luminosities, and colors of some 30 faint objects in the field around AO 0235 + 16; most are extended and may be star-forming galaxies in a loose group or cluster. Our most surprising result of the HST observations comes from FOS spectra obtained in 1995 July, discussed in Sec. 4. Because of a positioning error of the telescope and AO's faintness at that time (m approx. 20), object A was observed instead of the intended target AO. Serendipitously, we discovered A to have broad deep BALQSO-type absorptions of C IV, Si IV, N V shortward of broad emissions. A is thus ejecting high velocity, highly ionized gas into the surrounding IGM. We discuss in Sec. 5 the relationship of the objects in the central 10 sec X 1O sec region around AO, where redshifts z(sub e) = 0.94, z(sub a) = 0.524, 0.851 in AO, (sub e) = 0.524 and Z(sub BAL)=0.511 in A, are found. We hypothesize that some of the 30 faint objects in the 77 sec. x 77 sec. field may be part of a large star-forming region at z approx. 0.5, as suggested for a few objects by Yanny et al. (1989). The proximity of two highly active extragalactic objects, AO 0235+164 and its AGN companion A, is remarkable and one of the authors (EMB) suggests it may require consideration of a non-cosmological component of redshift in AO 0235+164.

Evaluation of medical treatments to increase survival of ebullism in guinea pigs

Spaceflight carriers run a constant risk of exposure to vacuum. Above 63,000 ft (47 mmHg), the ambient pressure falls below the vapor pressure of water at 37 C, and tissue vaporization (ebullism) begins. Little is know about appropriate resuscitative protocols after such an ebullism exposure. This study identified injury patterns and mortality rates associated with ebullism while verifying effectiveness of traditional pulmonary resuscitative techniques. Male Hartley guinea pigs were exposed to 87,000 ft for periods of 40 to 115 sec. After descent, those animals that did not breathe spontaneously were given artificial ventilation by bag and mask for up to 15 minutes. Those animals surviving were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups--hyperbaric oxygen (HBO), ground-level oxygen (GLO2), and ground-level air (GLAIR). The HBO group was treated on a standard treatment table 6A while the GLO2 animals received O2 for an equivalent length of time. Those animals in the GLAIR group were observed only. All surviving animals were humanely sacrified at 48 hours. Inflation of the animal's lungs after the exposure was found to be difficult and, at times, impossible. This may be due to surfactant disruption at the alveolar lining. Electron microscopy identified a disruption of the surfactant layer in animals that did not survive initial exposure. Mortality was found to increase with exposure time: 40 sec--0 percent; 60 sec--6 percent; 70 sec--40 percent; 80 sec--13 percent; 100 sec--38 percent; 110 sec--40 percent; and 115 sec--100 percent. There was no difference in the delayed mortality among the treatment groups (HBO--15 percent, GLO2--11 percent, GLAIR--11 percent). However, since resuscitation was ineffective, the effectiveness of any post-exposure treatment was severely limited. Preliminary results indicate that reuscitation of guinea pigs following ebullism exposure is difficult, and that current techniques (such as traditional CPR) may not be appropriate.

The circumstellar environment of IRAS 05338-0624

Millimeter continuum and spectral line observations with 10 sec, 30 sec, and 60 sec resolution are used to characterize the structure and chemistry of the gas around the young, embedded star, IRAS 05338-0624. On arcminute scales, emission from dense gas tracers outline an isolated condensation centered on the IRAS source position. The condensation is characterized by a size of approximately 60 sec, a density of 2 x 10(exp 5)/cc, and a virial mass of 40 solar mass. Interferometric CS J = 2-1 observations show two peaks, one toward the continuum peak and the other toward a position 14 sec west and 8 sec south. Single-dish maps of SO, CH3OH, and SiO show pronounced wing emission to the west of the IRAS source, which interferometer observations reveal to be a compact region of outflow activity. CS emission at redshifted and blueshifted velocities reveals a bipolar outflow oriented with a position angle of 45 deg, while SiO emission appears to be tracing a fast shock interaction region at the CS red-lobe peak, 14 sec west and 8 sec south of the IRAS source. Finally, H(13)CO(+) emission traces clumps of quiescent gas toward the IRAS source and adjacent to the blue lobe of the outflow. Column densities and molecular fractional abundances are derived to explore the interaction between the surrounding condensation and the young stellar object. We find evidence for gas phase depletions within the overall condensation in several gas tracers (CO, CS, HCN, SO) but not in the region immediately around the young stellar object. Enhanced abundances of SO, CH3OH, and SiO (by factors of 4, greater than 100, greater than 1000, respectively) are observed in the shocked gas; these enhancements may be explained in terms of a nondissociative shock liberating mantle materials that contain some amount of refractory materials, a moderate velocity dissociative shock in which only minor sputtering of Si occurs, or a shock that impacts surrounding material with a range of speeds.
