Constraints on the scalar-field potential in warm inflation

In this work, we quantify the degree of fine-tuning required to achieve an observationally viable period of inflation in the strongly dissipative regime of warm inflation. The “fine-tuning” parameter λ is taken to be the ratio of the change in the height of the potential Δ V to the change in the scalar field (ΔΦ) 4 , i.e., the width of the potential, and therefore measures the requisite degree of flatness in the potential. The best motivated warm inflationary scenarios involve a dissipation rate of the kind Γ ∝ T c with c ≥ 0 , and for all such cases, the bounds on λ are tighter than those for standard cold inflation by at least 3 orders of magnitude. In other words, these models require an even flatter potential than standard inflation. On the other hand for the case of warm inflation with c < 0, we find that in a strongly dissipative regime the bound on λ can significantly weaken with respect to cold inflation. Thus, if a warm inflation model can be constructed in a strongly dissipative, negatively temperature-dependent regime, it accommodates steeper potentials otherwise ruled out in standard inflation.

Double copy for massive scalar field theories

We explore extensions of the double copy to massive theories and find a new cubic theory with a local double copy. We consider the nonlinear sigma model and the special galileon theory, massless versions of which are known to be related through the double copy. We show that by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction of these theories from five dimensions down to four, a double copy relation exists between the resulting massive four-dimensional scalar field theories. This requires the vanishing contribution of new galileon terms arising in high dimensions. We further explore if other interactions that do not arise from a dimensional reduction of the nonlinear sigma model could be double copied and find a new cubic interaction which satisfies the BCJ relations up to 5-point amplitudes.

A Multifunctional Interface Method for Coupling Finite Element and Finite Difference Methods: Two-Dimensional Scalar-Field Problems

A multifunctional interface method with capabilities for variable-fidelity modeling and multiple method analysis is presented. The methodology provides an effective capability by which domains with diverse idealizations can be modeled independently to exploit the advantages of one approach over another. The multifunctional method is used to couple independently discretized subdomains, and it is used to couple the finite element and the finite difference methods. The method is based on a weighted residual variational method and is presented for two-dimensional scalar-field problems. A verification test problem and a benchmark application are presented, and the computational implications are discussed.

Scalar fields in 3D asymptotically flat higher-spin gravity

Abstract In this work we construct a novel associative algebra and use it to define a theory of higher-spin gravity in (2 + 1)-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. Our construction is based on a quotient of the universal enveloping algebra of i s l ( 2 , R ) with respect to the ideal generated by its Casimir elements, the mass squared M 2 and the three-dimensional analogue of the square of the Pauli–Lubanski vector S and propose to call the resulting associative algebra i h s ( M 2 , S ) . We provide a definition of its generators and even though we are not yet able to provide the complete set of multiplication rules of this algebra our analysis allows us to study many interesting and relevant sub-structures of i h s ( M 2 , S ) . We then show how to consistently couple a scalar field to an i h s ( M 2 , S ) higher-spin gauge theory.

Connecting flux vacua through scalar field excursions

We show how flux vacua that differ from each other in flux quanta can be seen as different vacua in a single scalar potential of an enlarged field space, which resolves the separation by thin domain walls. This observation, which is motivated by the anti–de Sitter distance conjecture, allows one to compute distances between different vacua using the usual field-space metric. We verify for explicit examples such as scale-separated IIA flux vacua and the IIB Freund-Rubin vacua that the distance conjecture (for scalar fields) is satisfied and that the asymptotic directions in the enlarged field space are indeed hyperbolic. This enlarged field space contains the tachyon fields on the unstable D ˜ p -branes of type II string theory, which can induce the brane charges of the stable D-branes. We suggest that requiring continuous interpolations refines the cobordism conjecture and postdicts the existence of unstable D ˜ p -branes. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Single-particle digitization strategy for quantum computation of a Φ 4 scalar field theory

Motivated by the parton picture of high-energy quantum chromodynamics, we develop a single-particle digitization strategy for the efficient quantum simulation of relativistic scattering processes in a d + 1-dimensional scalar Φ 4 field theory. Here, we work out quantum algorithms for initial state preparation, time evolution, and final state measurements. We outline a nonperturbative renormalization strategy in this single-particle framework.

Conformal boundary conditions for a 4d scalar field

We construct unitary, stable, and interacting conformal boundary conditions for a free massless scalar in four dimensions by coupling it to edge modes living on a boundary. The boundary theories we consider are bosonic and fermionic QED _3 3 with N_f N f flavors and a Chern-Simons term at level k k , in the large- N_f N f limit with fixed k/N_f k / N f . We find that interacting boundary conditions only exist when k≠ 0 k ≠ 0 . To obtain this result we compute the \beta β functions of the classically marginal couplings at the first non-vanishing order in the large- N_f N f expansion, and to all orders in k/N_f k / N f and in the couplings. To check vacuum stability we also compute the large- N_f N f effective potential. We compare our results with the the known conformal bootstrap bounds.

Layered patterns of active scalar fields in a two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic system

Here, we observe the formation of staircase patterns in the magnetic potential (𝐴) in a weakly magnetized two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic system driven by a forced, fluctuating vortex array. Layering occurs due to inhomogeneous mixing of 𝐴 by vortex cells. Magnetic Reynolds number (𝑅 𝑚 )–dependent quenching of the turbulent diffusion of 𝐴 by weak magnetic fields increases the disparity between the (short) cell circulation time and the (long) time for intercell transport of magnetic potential. Thus, magnetic fields strengthen transport barriers between cells and reinforce the staircase, relative to its passive scalar counterpart. The analysis reveals a feedback mechanism, which promotes staircase formation. Magnetic staircases persist in both the flux expulsion (𝑅 𝑚 ⁢𝑣$^2_𝐴$/𝑈$^2_0$<1) and vortex disruption (𝑅 𝑚 ⁢𝑣$^2_𝐴$/𝑈$^2_0$≥1) limits. In the latter case, residual vortex cells homogenize 𝐴. Global layering morphology is shown to be well characterized by staircase curvature. Stochastic forcing of magnetic potential can support magnetic staircases against resistive decay.

Full Field Scalar Measurements in a Pulsating Helium Jet using Rainbow Schlieren Deflectometry

The flow structure of a pulsating helium jet was investigated using quantitative rainbow schlieren deflectometry. The operating parameters included the tube inside diameter, the jet Reynolds number and the jet Richardson number. The jet structure was characterized by the frequency spectrum, temporal evolution of the oscillations and mean and root-mean-square profiles of the species mole fraction, which in this case, was helium. Experiments were conducted using a variable nozzle facility. Angular deflection data were obtained using rainbow schlieren deflectometry across full field of color images taken at a temporal resolution of 60Hz. The flicker cycle was analyzed by instantaneous rainbow schlieren images, contour plots of deflection angle and helium mole fraction placed sequentially in time. Two observe the flow downstream, the tube was lowered with respect to the optical setup and images were taken at different axial planes. In this way, the laminar, transition and turbulent regions of the jet flow were observed. Abel inversion algorithm was utilized to reconstruct the refractive index field from the measurements of the beam deflection angle. The concentration field was then generated from the refractive index field. The phenomenon of vortex initiation and propagation in the flicker cycle was described by correlating the ray deflection angle and concentration contour plots. Experiments in the flickering jet reveal global oscillation in the flow field. The effect of jet exit Reynolds number and jet Richardson number on the flickering frequency was analyzed. The effect of jet Richardson number was more pronounced than that of the jet exit Reynolds number. The flow field was studies quantitatively in terms of temporal evolution and statistical description of helium mole fraction.

Exact design of complex amplitude holograms for producing arbitrary scalar fields

Typical methods to holographically encode arbitrary wavefronts assume the hologram medium only applies either phase shifts or amplitude attenuation to the wavefront. In many cases, phase cannot be introduced to the wavefront without also affecting the amplitude. Here we show how to encode an arbitrary wavefront into an off-axis transmission hologram that returns the exact desired arbitrary wavefunction in a diffracted beam for phase-only, amplitude-only, or mixed phase and amplitude holograms with any periodic groove profile. We apply this to design thin holograms for electrons in a TEM, but our results are generally applicable to light and X-ray optics. We employ a phase reconstruction from a series of focal plane images to qualitatively show the accuracy of this method to impart the expected amplitude and phase to a specific diffraction order.
