Temporal Variability of Upper-level Winds at the Eastern Range, Western Range and Wallops Flight Facility

Space launch vehicles incorporate upper-level wind profiles to determine wind effects on the vehicle and for a commit to launch decision. These assessments incorporate wind profiles measured hours prior to launch and may not represent the actual wind the vehicle will fly through. Uncertainty in the upper-level winds over the time period between the assessment and launch can be mitigated by a statistical analysis of wind change over time periods of interest using historical data from the launch range. Five sets of temporal wind pairs at various times (.75, 1.5, 2, 3 and 4-hrs) at the Eastern Range, Western Range and Wallops Flight Facility were developed for use in upper-level wind assessments. Database development procedures as well as statistical analysis of temporal wind variability at each launch range will be presented.

A Long-Range Precision Ranging System

A technique is presented that may be used for precision real-time continuous range measuring at long ranges. The technique uses a carrier that is phase modulated by a pseudo-random binary sequence. The characteristics of the sequence that make it acquirable are discussed. The general form of a receiver capable of tracking the carrier is given and is shown to be a kind of phase-locked loop. A two-loop system capable of tracking a pseudo-random sequence and its clock is given. The combination of the receiver and the sequence tracking system form a ranging receiver. The power division necessary between the carrier and the sidebands is shown to be determined by the noise bandwidths of the two tracking systems. The bandwidths necessary for tracking space probes and Earth satellites are given and some experiments in radar-tracking Earth satellites are described. Based on these experiments, estimates are made of the useful range of such a system in tracking space probes.

Learning electric vehicle driver range anxiety with an initial state of charge-oriented gradient boosting approach

This manuscript focuses on the modeling of electric vehicle (EV) driver’s range anxiety, a fear that a vehicle does not have sufficient range, or state of charge (SOC) of the battery pack, to reach its destination and would strand its occupants. Despite numerous research studies on the modeling of charging behaviors, modeling efforts to understand at what battery percentages do EV drivers charge their vehicles, and what are the associated contributing factors, are rather limited. To this end, an ensemble learning model based on gradient boosting is developed. The model sequentially fits new predictors to new residuals of the previous prediction and, then, minimizes the loss when adding the latest prediction. A total of 18 features are defined and extracted from the multisource data, which cover information on driver, vehicles, stations, traffic conditions, as well as spatial-temporal context information of the charging events. The analyzed dataset includes 4.5-year’s charging event log data from 3,096 users and 468 public charging stations in Kansas City Missouri, and the macroscopic travel demand model maintained by the metropolitan planning organization. Here, the result shows the proposed model achieved a satisfactory result with a R square value of 0.54 and root mean square error of 0.14, both better than multiple linear regression model and random forest model. To reduce range anxiety, it is suggested that the priorities of deploying new charging facilities should be given to the areas with higher daily traffic prediction, with more conservative EV users or that are further from residential areas.

Frustration-mediated crossover from long-range to short-range magnetic ordering in Y 1 – x L u x BaC o 4 O 7

The R⁢BaC⁢o 4⁢ O 7 system is a prototype geometrically frustrated magnet in which kagome planes and triangular layers of Co-O tetrahedra interleave. For R=Y, an antiferromagnetic ground state is realized due to a frustration-breaking trigonal-orthorhombic phase transition. For R = Lu, however, a long-range ordered state has rarely, if ever, been reported despite a similar symmetry-breaking transition, albeit at a significantly lower temperature. To explore this dichotomy, we present a comprehensive magnetic and structural phase diagram for Y 1-x L⁢u x BaC⁢o 4 ⁢O 7 , established through complementary neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. Our results outline the phase evolution of the nuclear structures in response to changes in composition and temperature. Further, the temperature of the trigonal (P⁢31⁢c) to orthorhombic (Pbn⁢2 1 ) transition, T s⁢1 , decreases monotonically with increasing Lu content from 310 K for x = 0.0 to 110 K for x = 1.0. In Lu-rich compositions (0.7 ≤ x ≤ 1.0), first-order structural transitions are observed with coexisting and competing orthorhombic Pbn⁢2 1 and metastable monoclinic Cc phases. For the magnetically ordered Y-rich compositions, T- and x-dependent refinements of the magnetic structure reveal an antiferromagnetic “ribbonlike” arrangement of Co spin pairs in both the triangular and the kagome layers. A gradual suppression of long-range magnetic order is observed with increasing the Lu content, accompanied by the development of short-range magnetic correlations present in all the samples.

Polynomial filter estimation of range and range rate for terminal rendezvous

A study was made of a polynomial filter for computing range rate information from CSM VHF range data. The filter's performance during the terminal phase of the rendezvous is discussed. Two modifications of the filter were also made and tested. A manual terminal rendezvous was simulated and desired accuracies were achieved for vehicles on an intercept trajectory, except for short periods following each braking maneuver when the estimated range rate was initially in error by the magnitude of the burn.

Pulse spreading and range correction analysis for satellite laser ranging

The pulse spreading resulting from light detection and ranging measurements of the range to earth-orbiting satellites is described. An analysis quantifying this pulse spreading and the calculation of corrections to be applied to the lidar range determination of satellites is detailed.

Future Interagency Range and Spaceport Technologies (FIRST) Formulation Products: 1. Transformational Spaceport and Range Concept of Operations. 2. F.I.R.S.T. Business Case Analysis

The Baseline Report captures range and spaceport capabilities at five sites: KSC, CCAFS, VAFB, Wallops, and Kodiak. The Baseline depicts a future state that relies on existing technology, planned upgrades, and straight-line recapitalization at these sites projected through 2030. The report presents an inventory of current spaceport and range capabilities at these five sites. The baseline is the first part of analyzing a business case for a set of capabilities designed to transform U.S. ground and space launch operations toward a single, integrated national "system" of space transportation systems. The second part of the business case compares current capabilities with technologies needed to support the integrated national "system". The final part, a return on investment analysis, identifies the technologies that best lead to the integrated national system and reduce recurring costs..Numerous data sources were used to define and describe the baseline spaceport and range by identifying major systems and elements and describing capabilities, limitations, and capabilities

Mechanical Testing of Soils from the South Range of the Utah Test and Training Range: Derivation of Soil Properties to Support the Earth Entry System Landing for Mars Sample Return

This report summarizes results from laboratory tests conducted by Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) on soil samples collected from multiple sites within the South Range of the U.S. Air Force Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR). The goal of the laboratory tests was to establish soil constitutive properties and develop computational soil models enabling NASA to simulate impact landings of the Earth Entry System (EES) for the Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission. Test methods and results are presented describing the strength, compressibility, and stiffness of soils in the UTTR South Range including methods to incorporate the measured properties into Ansys LS-DYNAÒ constitutive material models for EES landing simulations.
