High-temperature quantum coherence of spinons in a rare-earth spin chain

Conventional wisdom dictates that quantum effects become unimportant at high temperatures. In magnets, when the thermal energy exceeds interactions between atomic magnetic moments, the moments are usually uncorrelated, and classical paramagnetic behavior is observed. This thermal decoherence of quantum spin behaviors is a major hindrance to quantum information applications of spin systems. Remarkably, our neutron scattering experiments on Yb chains in an insulating perovskite crystal defy these conventional expectations. We find a sharply defined spectrum of spinons, fractional quantum excitations of spin-1/2 chains, to persist to temperatures much higher than the scale of the interactions between Yb magnetic moments. The observed sharpness of the spinon continuum’s dispersive upper boundary indicates a spinon mean free path exceeding ≈ 35 inter-atomic spacings at temperatures more than an order of magnitude above the interaction energy scale. We thus discover an important and highly unique quantum behavior, which expands the realm of quantumness to high temperatures where entropy-governed classical behaviors were previously believed to dominate. Our results have profound implications for spin systems in quantum information applications operating at finite temperatures and motivate new developments in quantum metrology.

Spatiotemporal Crossover between Low- and High-Temperature Dynamical Regimes in the Quantum Heisenberg Magnet

The stranglehold of low temperatures on fascinating quantum phenomena in one-dimensional quantum magnets has been challenged recently by the discovery of anomalous spin transport at high temperatures. Whereas both regimes have been investigated separately, no study has attempted to reconcile them. For instance, the paradigmatic quantum Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ chain falls at low-temperature within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid framework, while its high-temperature dynamics is superdiffusive and relates to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class in $1+1$ dimensions. This work aims at reconciling the two regimes. Building on large-scale matrix product state simulations, we find that they are connected by a temperature-dependent spatiotemporal crossover. In this work, as the temperature $T$ is reduced, we show that the onset of superdiffusion takes place at longer length and time scales $\propto 1/T$. This prediction has direct consequences for experiments including nuclear magnetic resonance: it is consistent with earlier measurements on the nearly ideal Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chain compound Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ yet calls for new and dedicated experiments.

Quantum criticality in the anisotropic spin-chain antiferromagnet Ca 2 ⁢CoH 2 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 4

Here, the quantum criticality of an XXZ-type spin chain antiferromagnet Ca 2 ⁢CoH 2 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 4 , subjected to an external magnetic field, was investigated through ultralow-temperature specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. In the absence of an external magnetic field, the system undergoes an antiferromagnetic phase transition at T N = 1.42K. The application of an external field gradually suppresses the antiferromagnetic order. Furthermore, an additional phase emerges in the intermediate field range when the zero-field antiferromagnetic order is suppressed, resulting in a quantum critical point at B s ≈ 2.55T. Near this field-induced quantum critical point, universal scaling behaviors are observed, characterized by the universality class parameters d=1, v=1/2, and z=2.

Preparing exact eigenstates of the open XXZ chain on a quantum computer

The open spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain with diagonal boundary magnetic fields is the paradigmatic example of a quantum integrable model with open boundary conditions. Here, we formulate a quantum algorithm for preparing Bethe states of this model, corresponding to real solutions of the Bethe equations. The algorithm is probabilistic, with a success probability that decreases with the number of down spins. For a Bethe state of L spins with M down spins, which contains a total of $(^{L}_{M})$ $2^{M} M!$ terms, the algorithm requires L+M 2 +2M qubits.

Universality and quantum criticality in quasiperiodic spin chains

Abstract Quasiperiodic systems are aperiodic but deterministic, so their critical behavior differs from that of clean systems and disordered ones as well. Quasiperiodic criticality was previously understood only in the special limit where the couplings follow discrete quasiperiodic sequences. Here we consider generic quasiperiodic modulations; we find, remarkably, that for a wide class of spin chains, generic quasiperiodic modulations flow to discrete sequences under a real-space renormalization-group transformation. These discrete sequences are therefore fixed points of a functional renormalization group. This observation allows for an asymptotically exact treatment of the critical points. We use this approach to analyze the quasiperiodic Heisenberg, Ising, and Potts spin chains, as well as a phenomenological model for the quasiperiodic many-body localization transition.

Quantum Quench Dynamics–Crossover Phenomena in Nonequilibrium Correlated Quantum Systems (Final Technical Report)

In this project we have developed analytical and numerical tools to study the interplay between interactions, dimensionality, fluctuations and disorder in quantum impurity systems. We have studied the transient dynamics following a quench, i.e. the sudden change in a control variable of the model Hamiltonian, which offers a unique way to examine the system’s spatial, temporal and energetic structure. Specifically, we have investigated how crossover scales, i.e. given by Kondo couplings, are affected by disorder. We have addressed a wide range of phenomena, such as the effects of static disorder on dynamical screening of magnetic impurities, and the influence of a fully time-fluctuating bath environment on the dephasing of system qubits. We have found that many of these systems exhibit fascinating counterintuitive behavior, such as e.g. the possibility of asymptotic unitary time evolution in specifically conditioned system-bath Hamiltonians. From a technical point of view, we have developed a supersymmetric formalism to analyze scaling functions of disordered quantum impurity spin chains, we generalized the strong-coupling real-space renormalization group method to probe the quench dynamics of higher-dimensional quantum impurity systems, and we devised a master equation approach that included the effects of a fully fluctuating environment. This way, we have addressed a very broad spectrum of transient phenomena in quantum impurity systems, with disorder ranging from the quenched to the annealed limit.

Feedback-based quantum algorithm inspired by counterdiabatic driving

In recent quantum algorithmic developments, a feedback-based approach has shown promise for preparing quantum many-body system ground states and solving combinatorial optimization problems. This method utilizes quantum Lyapunov control to iteratively construct quantum circuits. Here, we propose a substantial enhancement by implementing a protocol that uses ideas from quantum Lyapunov control and the counterdiabatic driving protocol, a key concept from quantum adiabaticity. Our approach introduces an additional control field inspired by counterdiabatic driving. We apply our algorithm to prepare ground states in one-dimensional quantum Ising spin chains. Comprehensive simulations demonstrate a remarkable acceleration in population transfer to low-energy states within a significantly reduced time frame compared to conventional feedback-based quantum algorithms. This acceleration translates to a reduced quantum circuit depth, a critical metric for potential quantum computer implementation. We validate our algorithm on the IBM cloud computer, highlighting its efficacy in expediting quantum computations for many-body systems and combinatorial optimization problems.

Superdiffusion from Nonabelian Symmetries in Nearly Integrable Systems

The Heisenberg spin chain is a canonical integrable model. As such, it features stable ballistically propagating quasiparticles, but spin transport is subballistic at any nonzero temperature: An initially localized spin fluctuation spreads in time t to a width t 2/3 . This exponent as well as the functional form of the dynamical spin correlation function suggest that spin transport is in the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) universality class. However, the full counting statistics of magnetization is manifestly incompatible with KPZ scaling. A simple two-mode hydrodynamic description, derivable from microscopic principles, captures both the KPZ scaling of the correlation function and the coarse features of the full counting statistics, but remains to be numerically validated. These results generalize to any integrable spin chain invariant under a continuous nonabelian symmetry and are surprisingly robust against moderately strong integrability-breaking perturbations that respect the nonabelian symmetry.

Magnetic phases of spatially modulated spin-1 chains in Rydberg excitons: Classical and quantum simulations

Here, in this work, we study the magnetic phases of a spatially modulated chain of spin-1 Rydberg excitons. Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) technique, we study various magnetic and topologically nontrivial phases using both single-particle properties, such as local magnetization and quantum entropy, and many-body ones, such as pair-wise Néel and long-range string correlations. In particular, we investigate the emergence and robustness of the Haldane phase, a topological phase of anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 chains. Furthermore, we devise a hybrid quantum algorithm employing restricted Boltzmann machine to simulate the ground state of such a system that shows very good agreement with the results of exact diagonalization and DMRG.

Speed of quantum information spreading in chaotic systems

In this work, we present a general theory of quantum information propagation in chaotic quantum many-body systems. The generic expectation in such systems is that quantum information does not propagate in localized form; instead, it tends to spread out and scramble into a form that is inaccessible to local measurements. To characterize this spreading, we define an information speed via a quench-type experiment and derive a general formula for it as a function of the entanglement density of the initial state. As the entanglement density varies from zero to one, the information speed varies from the entanglement speed to the butterfly speed. We verify that the formula holds both for a quantum chaotic spin chain and in field theories with an AdS/CFT gravity dual. For the second case, we study in detail the dynamics of entanglement in two-sided Vaidya-AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom black branes. We also show that, with an appropriate decoding process, quantum information can be construed as moving at the information speed, and, in the case of AdS/CFT, we show that a locally detectable signal propagates at the information speed in a spatially local variant of the traversable wormhole setup.

Scrambling and operator entanglement in local non-Hermitian quantum systems

The breakdown of Lieb-Robinson bounds in local, non-Hermitian quantum systems opens up the possibility for a rich landscape of quantum many-body phenomenology. We elucidate this by studying information scrambling and quantum chaos in non-Hermitian variants of paradigmatic local quantum spin-chain models. We utilize a mixture of exact diagonalization and tensor network techniques for our numerical results and focus on three dynamical quantities: (i) out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs), (ii) operator entanglement of the dynamics, and (iii) entanglement growth following a quench from product initial states. We show that while OTOCs fail to capture information scrambling in a simple, local, non-Hermitian transverse-field Ising model, the closely related operator entanglement is a robust measure of dynamical properties of interest. Moreover, we show that the short-time growth of operator entanglement can generically detect entanglement phase transitions in these systems while its long-time average is shown to be a reliable indicator of quantum chaos and entanglement phases. This allows us to extend operator entanglement-based diagnostics from previous works on closed and open quantum systems, to the new arena of monitored quantum dynamics. Finally, we remark on the efficacy of these dynamical quantities in detecting integrability/chaos in the presence of continuous monitoring.

Decay rates of almost strong modes in Floquet spin chains beyond Fermi's Golden Rule

The stability and dynamics of almost strong zero and π modes in weakly nonintegrable Floquet spin chains are investigated. Such modes can also be viewed as localized Majorana modes at the edge of a topological superconductor. Perturbation theory in the strength of integrability breaking interaction J z is employed to estimate the decay rates of these modes, and compared to decay rates obtained from exact diagonalization. Here, the structure of the perturbation theory and thus the lifetime of the modes is governed by the conservation of quasienergy modulo 2π/T, where T is the period of the Floquet system. If there are 4n – 1 bulk excitations whose quasienergies add up to zero (or π/T for a π mode), one obtains a decay channel of the Majorana mode with a decay rate proportional to $J$$^{2n}_{z}$. Thus the lifetime is sensitively controlled by the width of the single-particle Floquet bands. For regimes where the decay rates are quadratic in J z , an analytic expression for the decay rate in terms of an infinite temperature autocorrelation function of the integrable model is derived, and shown to agree well with exact diagonalization.

Universal spin dynamics in infinite-temperature one-dimensional quantum magnets

Here, we address the nature of spin dynamics in various integrable and non-integrable, isotropic and anisotropic quantum spin-$S$ chains, beyond the paradigmatic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model. In particular, we investigate the algebraic long-time decay $\propto t^{-1/z}$ of the spin-spin correlation function at infinite temperature, using state-of-the-art simulations based on tensor network methods. We identify three universal regimes for the spin transport, independent of the exact microscopic model: (i) superdiffusive with $z=3/2$, as in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, when the model is integrable with extra symmetries such as spin isotropy that drive the Drude weight to zero, (ii) ballistic with $z=1$ when the model is integrable with a finite Drude weight, and (iii) diffusive with $z=2$ with easy-axis anisotropy or without integrability, at variance with previous observations.

Numerical Evidence for a Haagerup Conformal Field Theory

We numerically study an anyon chain based on the Haagerup fusion category and find evidence that it leads in the long-distance limit to a conformal field theory whose central charge is ~2. Fusion categories generalize the concept of finite group symmetries to noninvertible symmetry operations, and the Haagerup fusion category is the simplest one which comes from neither finite groups nor affine Lie algebras. As such, ours is the first example of conformal field theories which have truly exotic generalized symmetries. Basically the same result was independently obtained in the preceding Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 231602 (2022)].

The Zoo of Opers and Dualities

Abstract We investigate various spaces of $SL(r+1)$-opers and their deformations. For each type of such opers, we study the quantum/classical duality, which relates quantum integrable spin chains with classical solvable many body systems. In this context, quantum/classical dualities serve as an interplay between two different coordinate systems on the space of opers. We also establish correspondences between the underlying oper spaces, which recently had multiple incarnations in symplectic duality and bispectral duality.

Simulating plasma wave propagation on a superconducting quantum chip

Quantum computers may one day enable the efficient simulation of strongly coupled plasmas that lie beyond the reach of classical computation in regimes where quantum effects are important and the scale separation is large. Here, in this article, we take a first step toward efficient simulation of quantum plasmas by demonstrating linear plasma wave propagation on a superconducting quantum chip. Using high-fidelity and highly expressive device-native gates, combined with an error-mitigation technique, we simulate the scattering of laser pulses from inhomogeneous plasmas. Our approach is made feasible by the identification of a suitable local spin model whose excitations mimic plasma waves, and whose circuit implementation requires a lower gate count than other proposed approaches that would require a future fault-tolerant quantum computer. This work opens avenues to study more complicated phenomena that cannot be simulated efficiently on classical computers, such as nonlinear quantum dynamics when strongly coupled plasmas are driven out of equilibrium.

Hydrodynamic relaxation of spin helices

Motivated by recent cold-atom experiments, here we study the relaxation of spin helices in quantum XXZ spin chains. The experimentally observed relaxation of spin helices follows scaling laws that are qualitatively different from linear-response transport. We construct a theory of the relaxation of such spin helices, combining generalized hydrodynamics with diffusive corrections and a generalized form of the local density approximation. Although helices are far from local equilibrium, our hydrodynamic approach reproduces the experimentally observed relaxational dynamics and also predicts the late-time relaxation, which is outside the experimentally accessible timescales. In particular, our theory explains the existence of temporal regimes with apparent anomalous diffusion, as well as the asymmetry between positive and negative anisotropy regimes at short and intermediate times.

Universal Tripartite Entanglement in One-Dimensional Many-Body Systems

Motivated by conjectures in holography relating the entanglement of purification and reflected entropy to the entanglement wedge cross section, we introduce two related non-negative measures of tripartite entanglement g and h. We prove structure theorems which show that states with nonzero g or h have nontrivial tripartite entanglement. We then establish that in one dimension these tripartite entanglement measures are universal quantities that depend only on the emergent low-energy theory. For a gapped system, we argue that either g≠0 and h=0 or g=h=0, depending on whether the ground state has long-range order. For a critical system, we develop a numerical algorithm for computing g and h from a lattice model. We compute g and h for various CFTs and show that h depends only on the central charge whereas g depends on the whole operator content.
