A cross-frontier quest to reveal the origin of the Universe

We still don't know much about our Universe. Various fundamental symmetry tests to reveal the origin of the Universe include: multi-species EDM searches, Lepton Flavor Violation, CPV/LNV/LFV searches at colliders, and Lepton Number Violation.

The Quest for High-Temperature Superconductivity in Nickelates under Ambient Pressure

Recently, superconductivity with Tc ≈ 80 K was discovered in La3Ni2O7 under extreme hydrostatic pressure (>14 GPa). For practical applications, we needed to stabilize this state at ambient pressure. It was proposed that this could be accomplished by substituting La with Ba. To put this hypothesis to the test, we used the state-of-the-art atomic-layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (ALL-MBE) technique to synthesize (La1−xBax)3Ni2O7 films, varying x and the distribution of La (lanthanum) and Ba (barium). Regrettably, none of the compositions we explored could be stabilized epitaxially; the targeted compounds decomposed immediately into a mixture of other phases. So, this path to high-temperature superconductivity in nickelates at ambient pressure does not seem promising.

How Aqueous Solvation Impacts the Frequencies and Intensities of Infrared Absorption Bands in Flavin: The Quest for a Suitable Solvent Model

FTIR spectroscopy accompanied by quantum chemical simulations can reveal important information about molecular structure and intermolecular interactions in the condensed phase. Simulations typically account for the solvent either through cluster quantum mechanical (QM) models, polarizable continuum models (PCM), or hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) models. Recently, we studied the effect of aqueous solvent interactions on the vibrational frequencies of lumiflavin, a minimal flavin model, using cluster QM and PCM models. Those models successfully reproduced the relative frequencies of four prominent stretching modes of flavin’s isoalloxazine ring in the diagnostic 1450–1750 cm−1 range but poorly reproduced the relative band intensities. Here, we extend our studies on this system and account for solvation through a series of increasingly sophisticated models. Only by combining elements of QM clusters, QM/MM, and PCM approaches do we obtain an improved agreement with the experiment. The study sheds light more generally on factors that can impact the computed frequencies and intensities of IR bands in solution.

A Tunable Resolution Grating Monochromator and the Quest for Transform Limited Pulses

A variable resolution, transform limited monochromator is designed for the Free Electron Laser (FEL) source of LCLS. It provides monochromatic beam in the 250–1500 eV range, delivering the beam on the second floor of the LCLS experimental Hall. One major requirement for this monochromator is to provide, as close as possible, monochromatic transform limited pulses for time-resolved experiments. The theory and the limit of using classical diffraction scheme to monochromatize Soft X-ray beam, while preserving the pulse length, will be presented, together with the optical scheme of this versatile monochromator design.

The Quest for New Correlations in the Realm of the Gamma-Ray Burst—Supernova Connection

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are very energetic cosmological transients. Long GRBs are usually associated with Type Ib/c supernovae (SNe), and we refer to them as GRB-SNe. Since the associated SN for a given GRB is observed only at low redshift, a possible selection effect exists when we consider intrinsically faint sources that cannot be observed at high redshift. Thus, it is important to explore the possible relationships between GRB and SN parameters after these have been corrected for astrophysical biases due to the instrumental selection effects and redshift evolution of the variables involved. So far, only GRB prompt emission properties have been checked against the SN Ib/c properties without considering the afterglow (AG). This work investigates the existence of relationships among GRBs’ prompt and AG and associated SN properties. We investigate 91 bidimensional correlations among the SN and GRB observables before and after their correction for selection biases and evolutionary effects. As a result of this investigation, we find hints of a new correlation with a Pearson correlation coefficient >0.50 and a probability of being drawn by chance <0.05. This correlation is between the luminosity at the end of the GRB optical plateau emission and the rest-frame peak time of the SN. According to this relation, the brightest optical plateaus are accompanied by the largest peak times. This correlation is corrected for selection biases and redshift evolution and may provide new constraints for the astrophysical models associated with the GRB-SN connection.
