Replacement of Fly Ash with Natural Pozzolans in Cementitious Waste Forms: Progress Report

The Department of Energy Environmental Management (DOE EM) Office is currently responsible for treating radioactive and mixed waste, environmental restoration, and closing contaminated tanks and facilities resulting from radioactive isotope production for defense applications during the Cold War. Cementitious reagents are the most widely used materials for (1) chemically stabilizing and encapsulating radionuclides and hazardous metals contaminated with radionuclides and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous metals and (2) solidifying radioactive and mixed wastewater for final disposal. Cementitious grouts and flowable concretes are also the most widely used materials for DOE waste tank and facility closures.

Imprinted Micelle Integration into a Commercial Platform (Progress Report)

PNNL has successfully integrated a commercial aerosol detector and the imprinted micelle technology. The integrated systems have been shown to have a limit of detection between 33-47 particles with several options for data analysis presented that vary on computational requirements. It is possible to integrate these systems and receive response data on the second time scale. While more work is needed, these technologies are compatible, which opens up a large field of air sampling looking for specific contaminates.

Establishing an Early CO 2 Storage Complex in Kemper County, Mississippi: Project ECO 2 S (Phase III) (Final Progress Report)

“Establishing an Early CO 2 Storage Complex in Kemper County, Mississippi (Project ECO 2 S)” is an early mover project within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and National Energy Technology Laboratory’s Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise, or CarbonSAFE, initiative. Phase III of Project ECO2S advanced the foundational work of Phase II, which confirmed the potential for safely, permanently, and economically storing commercial volumes of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the regionally significant saline reservoir system near Mississippi Power Company’s (MPC) Kemper County Energy Facility. The primary objective of Phase III was to complete detailed site characterization necessary to obtain an Underground Injection Control (UIC) Class VI Permit to Construct from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This involved transitioning from regional geologic assessments to high-resolution site-specific analyses.

Q-Fibre Quarterly Performance Progress Report

The project titled Quantitative Strain Monitoring for Well and Seal Integrity through Wellbore Fiber Optic Cable s, or Q-Fibre in short, is a multi-national collaborative project under the Clean Energy Transitional Partnership (CETP) program. The lead organization of the project is the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), and the LLNL team joins as a beneficiary member. The LLNL team receives the funding from the U.S. Department of Energy with the amount of $\$$1 million across three years, and the budget is primarily allocated to Work Package 3 (WP3) of the project, which focuses on Numerical Modeling of Fiber Optic Cable Data . Figure 1 presents all work packages involved in the project and corresponding lead organization for each work package. The LLNL team leads WP3.

Closing the Loop Between In Situ Stress Complexity and EGS Fracture Complexity: Quarterly Research Performance Progress Report

As part of Task 1, we have started by testing our modeling capabilities by reproducing isothermal DFIT simulations presented in the literature. To start, we have been working towards adjusting numerical parameters to reproduce DFIT tests with different fracture geometries. Then, we have focused modeling the DFIT conducted at well 58-32 (cycle 4 in zone 2). Specifically, we have carefully analyzed the influence of the aperture-contact stress relationship and investigated how two different laws affect model results.

Characterizing falling particle curtain receivers at commercially relevant scales: Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR-1)

Sandia will construct a cold flow receiver test platform in order to characterize falling particle curtain receivers at commercially relevant scales. While Sandia has extensive experience in R&D of falling particle curtain receivers, most have been at pilot scale and smaller - on the order of 1 MWth with characteristic dimensions of nominally 1-2 m to adequately collect solar energy from the heliostat field at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF). However, scaling up receivers to commercially relevant scales (25 MWth and above) will require a thorough understanding of particle curtain dynamics at larger scales, especially longer drop heights, for design certainty. The goal of this project will be to construct a cold falling particle curtain test rig capable of simulating particle characteristics that are expected in a commercial scale CSP plant, namely the drop height, curtain thickness, and particle mass flow rate (normalized by length of curtain). This will enable data collection on curtain opacity and spread, both of which are correlated to receiver efficiency and reliable construction, for commercially relevant scales. It will also permit validation of numerical models that will enable detailed receiver characterization and design past currently validated scales.

End of (3rd) Month Progress Report - PhD Committee

For the months of (May-August), the focus has been to: ● Comply and attend all mandatory LLNL training(s). ● Practice & gain experience, using a 3D printer for direct-ink writing application. ● Construct & Test Cu-Si anodes for battery application: - Si nanoparticles (<100 nm) is alloyed within a Cu-based current collector, via direct-ink writing. - Tuning the overall architecture of the current collector (to accommodate the volume expansion of Si more efficiently/ stabilize its kinetics - of active Si loss). - Based on the following designed configurations: tape-casted, 2D (spiral-square), and 3D (spiral-square/ zig-zag) structures; utilizing commercial-based Cu paste. - Fabricated (half-cell) coin-cells are currently cycling long-term. ● Synthesize new Cu-Si paste, to further tune the rheology properties, for further comparison with commercial Cu-based paste.

FY25 Progress Report: SRNL Analysis of ICCWR LCM and WAMS data for Corrosion and Cracking

Algorithms for Machine Learning (ML) and image analysis for the 3013 Surveillance Program have been developed in an ongoing collaborative effort by the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and the University of South Carolina (USC). The objective of the algorithms is to automate the identification of corrosion and cracks in the Inner Container Closure Weld Region (ICCWR) of the canister system used to store Pu-bearing material. Data for corrosion and cracking is collected from large binary files generated by a Laser Confocal Microscope (LCM), the Wide Area 3D Measurement System (WAMS), or, in a recent proposal, by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The ML software uses the physical attributes in the data files (e.g., one or more of: height, color, and 16-bit grayscale values as functions of position in a plane projection) to detect signs of surface corrosion and cracking after being trained on similar data with the features to be detected. Although the initial scope included screening for broader indicators of corrosion, e.g., pitting, the identification of potential cracks was prioritized for the past several years at the request of program leadership.

In-Tank Processing Using Low Temperature Aluminum Dissolution: Year 1 Progress Report

The Hanford Site stores approximately 56 million gallons of radioactive legacy defense waste in underground tanks. This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing in-tank low-temperature aluminum dissolution to favorably alter the transport properties of aluminum-rich southeast quadrant waste sludges, thereby de-risking sludge delivery for Direct Feed of High-Level Waste. Specifically, this study aims to assess the rate and extent of gibbsite dissolution under various conditions, including different particle sizes (~10 to 90 µm), NaOH concentrations (1 to 6 M), and the presence of specific analytes such as NO 2 - , NO 3 - , and other aluminum-rich waste background analytes, using simulated waste solids and liquids. Experimental tests were designed to highlight the impact of aluminum leaching on simulated waste transport properties, quantified by the just-suspended mixing speed (NJS), and were conducted under well-mixed, turbulent conditions, ensuring full suspension of gibbsite particles using an overhead mixer. The results suggest that the presence of NO 2 - and NO 3 - , in conjunction with leaching at relatively low free hydroxide contents, improved transport requirements (i.e., lowered NJS) for pure gibbsite slurries. These findings will inform the design of potential in-tank processing systems, optimizing aluminum dissolution for improved waste management in the Hanford Tank Farms.

Blending as an In-Tank Waste Processing Strategy: Year 1 Progress Report

The Hanford Site stores approximately 56 million gallons of radioactive legacy defense waste in underground tanks. Direct feed of southeast quadrant tank waste to a high-level waste treatment facility is currently being explored to accelerate tank treatment activities. This study seeks to de-risk waste transfers by favorably altering the resuspension and critical velocities of wastes through strategic waste blending. Wastes rich in aluminum- and zirconium-bearing solids pose significant risks due to their high settled strength and density. A series of tests explores how solid phase particle size and suspending phase chemistry alter waste transport properties, quantified through the just-suspended mixing speed (NJS), for pure and blended aluminum- and zirconium-bearing waste solid simulants. The study utilizes a range of gibbsites (three sizes spanning 10 to 90 µm) and zirconia solids (three sizes spanning 10 to 100 µm). As expected, the NJS of pure solids largely follows predictions based on literature correlations; blends of gibbsite and zirconium-bearing solids of differing particle sizes exhibit NJS maxima attributed to dense packing of the mixed-size settled solids. The findings of this study will assist in developing strategies to optimize the transport of waste solids for the safe and efficient delivery of tank waste.

Advanced CO 2 Capture Solvent Systems for Dynamic Power Generation: Quarterly Research Performance Progress Report, QR4 (Q4FY24)

We developed an integrated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to simulate the multi-physics coupled cooling process of mixed gas by cold water within a Direct Contact Cooler (DCC) equipped with a rotating packing bed (RPB). The model captures the interactions between fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass transport, and phase transitions, while accounting for key operational variables such as RPB rotational speed and the mass flow rates of both liquid and gas. The CFD model has been validated using experimental data, specifically by comparing predicted outflow gas and liquid temperatures to measured results. Our findings demonstrate the significant effects of RPB rotational speed and mass flow rates on cooling performance, providing valuable insights for optimizing DCC efficiency in industrial applications.

Advanced Characterization of Wastewaters with a Focus on the Environment & Economics (Final Technical Progress Report)

This project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy under award DE-FE0032457 and conducted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, focused on advancing the characterization of coal combustion residual (CCR) effluents. The primary objectives were to develop analytical methods for detecting major cations, anions, trace metals, and rare earth elements (REEs) in CCR wastewater, assess environmental impacts, and explore opportunities for resource recovery. The project advanced the development of a "One-Shot" analysis system designed to simultaneously analyze multiple analytes in CCR effluents.

STARFIRE – Science and Technology Accelerated Research for Fusion Innovation and Reactor Engineering progress report

The STARFIRE hub leverages foundational science and technology (S&T) research and integrated plant modeling tools to advance Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE). S&T breakthroughs achieved in each thrust are incorporated into an integrated modeling tool to assess and prioritize remaining gaps to bridge for IFE to become viable. Scientific highlights span high-gain target design, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, and innovative target manufacturing. Key highlights include the investigation of shock propagation through various foam structures among other limiting factors of compression of IFE target, exploration of novel 3D printing techniques such as light-sheet additive manufacturing for 2-photon polymerization foams, and diode-pumped solid-state laser architectures required for several IFE approaches. In addition, the STARFIRE team has established two public-private working groups to address laser diode supply chain issues and test advanced laser diode configurations. Finally, a lite version of the integrated modeling tool has been developed to facilitate outreach and engage with private companies. STARFIRE’s management structure has been designed to ensure agile resource allocation, robust performance assessment, and alignment with the broader fusion energy mission. STARFIRE’s breakthroughs are disseminated to the community via reports, presentations, and publications, while agreements with private companies are set in place to protect proprietary information.

Vehicle Technologies Program: Energy Storage R&D (2008 Annual Progress Report)

One of the primary objectives of the Energy Storage effort is the development of durable and affordable advanced batteries (and ultracapacitors) for use in a full range of vehicle applications, from start/stop to full-power HEVs, EVs, and PHEVs. The battery technology development activity spans three areas: system development of full battery systems; benchmark testing of emerging technologies in order to remain abreast of the latest industry developments; and Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) to fund early-stage R&D for small businesses/entrepreneurs.

Uncertainty-Driven Rapid Thermodynamic Assessment of Nb-Ta-Zr System and Effects of C impurities (L25GF9298S): Annual Progress Report

An integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) method is in development for rapid thermodynamic experimental investigation and high-fidelity computational modeling of refractory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs). These ultra-high-temperature (UHT) alloys are of interest for structural applications in extreme environments, but deficiency of reliable data, especially melting temperatures, impedes the prediction of alloys with favorable properties. The method leverages UHT capabilities and computational expertise of LLNL’s Materials Science Division and the McCormack Lab’s UHT conical nozzle levitation (CNL) system to iteratively map the Nb-Ta-Zr phase space, with focus on the liquidus surface, through targeted experiments selected by quantifying uncertainty in the thermodynamic model fitting parameters. This method will reduce the time to map uncharted RMPEA phase space and thereby accelerate discovery and development of advanced materials for applications in extreme environments.
