Solar Dynamic Power System Stability Analysis and Control

The objective of this research is to conduct dynamic analysis, control design, and control performance test of solar power system. Solar power system consists of generation system and distribution network system. A bench mark system is used in this research, which includes a generator with excitation system and governor, an ac/dc converter, six DDCU's and forty-eight loads. A detailed model is used for modeling generator. Excitation system is represented by a third order model. DDCU is represented by a seventh order system. The load is modeled by the combination of constant power and constant impedance. Eigen-analysis and eigen-sensitivity analysis are used for system dynamic analysis. The effects of excitation system, governor, ac/dc converter control, and the type of load on system stability are discussed. In order to improve system transient stability, nonlinear ac/dc converter control is introduced. The direct linearization method is used for control design. The dynamic analysis results show that these controls affect system stability in different ways. The parameter coordination of controllers are recommended based on the dynamic analysis. It is concluded from the present studies that system stability is improved by the coordination of control parameters and the nonlinear ac/dc converter control stabilize system oscillation caused by the load change and system fault efficiently.

Performance and Feature Improvements in Parareal-based Power System Dynamic Simulation

In recent years, a novel Parareal-based approach has been developed for fast transient simulations of large power system interconnections. Parareal belongs to the class of Parallel-in-time algorithms for solution of systems of differential-algebraic equations in parallel over an interval of time. The selection of a reasonably fast and accurate coarse solution is crucial to improve the performance of Parareal algorithm. Semi-analytical solution methods are one promising approach to achieve this goal. They have been investigated, and some preliminary results are presented here. In addition, Parareal-based simulator has been expanded to enable co-simulation with OpenDSS, a widely used open-source distribution system simulator. Preserving the parallel nature of the Parareal approach and taking advantage of the parallel capabilities of the latest versions of OpenDSS, each distribution system can be solved in their entirety on different processors in parallel within the main Parareal simulator. This paper also presents the structure of the transmission and distribution co-simulation and some results with different dynamic models of inverter-based resources in the distribution systems.

Solar Dynamic Power System Fault Diagnosis

The objective of this research is to conduct various fault simulation studies for diagnosing the type and location of faults in the power distribution system. Different types of faults are simulated at different locations within the distribution system and the faulted waveforms are monitored at measurable nodes such as at the output of the DDCU's. These fault signatures are processed using feature extractors such as FFT and wavelet transforms. The extracted features are fed to a clustering based neural network for training and subsequent testing using previously unseen data. Different load models consisting of constant impedance and constant power are used for the loads. Open circuit faults and short circuit faults are studied. It is concluded from present studies that using features extracted from wavelet transforms give better success rates during ANN testing. The trained ANN's are capable of diagnosing fault types and approximate locations in the solar dynamic power distribution system.

Performance and durability of high emittance heat receiver surfaces for solar dynamic power systems

Haynes 188, a cobalt-based superalloy, will be used to make thermal energy storage (TES) containment canisters for a 2 kW solar dynamic ground test demonstrator (SD GTD). Haynes 188 containment canisters with a high thermal emittance (epsilon) are desired for radiating heat away from local hot spots, improving the heating distribution, which will in turn improve canister service life. In addition to needing a high emittance, the surface needs to be durable in an elevated temperature, high vacuum environment for an extended time period. Thirty-five Haynes 188 samples were exposed to 14 different types of surface modification techniques for emittance and vacuum heat treatment (VHT) durability enhancement evaluation. Optical properties were obtained for the modified surfaces. Emittance enhanced samples were exposed to VHT for up to 2692 hours at 827 C and less than or equal to 10(exp -6) torr with integral thermal cycling. Optical properties were taken intermittently during exposure, and after final VHT exposure. The various surface modification treatments increased the emittance of pristine Haynes 188 from 0.11 up to 0.86. Seven different surface modification techniques were found to provide surfaces which met the SD GTD receiver VHT durability requirement. Of the 7 surface treatments, 2 were found to display excellent VHT durability: an alumina based (AB) coating and a zirconia based coating. The alumina based coating was chosen for the epsilon enhancement surface modification technique for the SD GTD receiver. Details of the performance and vacuum heat treatment durability of this coating and other Haynes 188 emittance surface modification techniques are discussed. Technology from this program will lead to successful demonstration of solar dynamic power for space applications, and has potential for application in other systems requiring high emittance surfaces.

Identification of salt-alloy combinations for thermal energy storage applications in advanced solar dynamic power systems

Thermodynamic calculations based on the available data for flouride salt systems reveal that a number of congruently melting compositions and eutectics exist which have the potential to meet the lightweight, high energy storage requirements imposed for advanced solar dynamic systems operating between about 1000 and 1400 K. Compatibility studies to determine suitable containment alloys to be used with NaF-22CaF2-13MgF2, NaF-32CaF2, and NaF-23MgF2 have been conducted at the eutectic temperature + 25 K for each system. For these three NaF-based eutectics, none of the common, commercially available high temperature alloys appear to offer adequate corrosion resistance for a long lifetime; however mild steel, pure nickel and Nb-1Zr could prove useful. These latter materials suggest the possibility that a strong, corrosion resistant, nonrefractory, elevated temperature alloy based on the Ni-Ni3Nb system could be developed.

The ground testing of a 2 kWe solar dynamic space power system

The solar dynamic power system chosen by NASA for Space Station Freedom SSF requires validation in the vacuum/microgravity environment. The planned ground tests of a proof-of-concept 2 kWe solar dynamic system with address subsystem integration issues involving such major system components as the behavior of thermal energy storage materials. This test scheme will be scalable to 25 kWe, and will be flight-configured to incorporate features of the SSF's power module design.

Optical analysis of parabolic dish concentrators for solar dynamic power systems in space

An optical analysis of a parabolic solar collection system operating in Earth orbit was performed using ray tracing techniques. The analysis included the effects of: (1) solar limb darkening, (2) parametric variation of mirror surface error, (3) parametric variation of mirror rim angle, and (4) parametric variation of alignment and pointing error. This ray tracing technique used numerical integration to combine the effects of rays emanating from different parts of the sun at different intensities with the effects of normally distributed mirror-surface errors to compute the angular intensity distribution of rays leaving the mirror surface. A second numerical integration was then performed over the surface of the parabolic mirror to compute the radial distribution of brightness at the mirror focus. Major results of the analysis included: (1) solar energy can be collected at high temperatures with high efficiency, (2) higher absorber temperatures can be achieved at lower efficiencies, or higher efficiencies can be achieved at lower temperatures, and (3) collection efficiency is near its maximum level across a broad plateau of rim angles from 40 deg to 70 deg.

Modelling the performance of the monogroove with screen heat pipe for use in the radiator of the solar dynamic power system of the NASA Space Station

A computer code to model the steady-state performance of a monogroove heat pipe for the NASA Space Station is presented, including the effects on heat pipe performance of a screen in the evaporator section which deals with transient surges in the heat input. Errors in a previous code have been corrected, and the new code adds additional loss terms in order to model several different working fluids. Good agreement with existing performance curves is obtained. From a preliminary evaluation of several of the radiator design parameters it is found that an optimum fin width could be achieved but that structural considerations limit the thickness of the fin to a value above optimum.

Solar concentrators for advanced solar-dynamic power systems in space

This report summarizes the results of a study performed by Hughes Danbury Optical Systems, HDOS, (formerly Perkin-Elmer) to design, fabricate, and test a lightweight (2 kg/sq M), self supporting, and highly reflective sub-scale concentrating mirror panel suitable for use in space. The HDOS panel design utilizes Corning's 'micro sheet' glass as the top layer of a composite honeycomb sandwich. This approach, whose manufacturability was previously demonstrated under an earlier NASA contract, provides a smooth (specular) reflective surface without the weight of a conventional glass panel. The primary result of this study is a point design and it's performance assessment.
