Finite element solution of torsion and other 2-D Poisson equations

The NASTRAN structural analysis computer program may be used, without modification, to solve two dimensional Poisson equations such as arise in the classical Saint Venant torsion problem. The nonhomogeneous term (the right-hand side) in the Poisson equation can be handled conveniently by specifying a gravitational load in a "structural" analysis. The use of an analogy between the equations of elasticity and those of classical mathematical physics is summarized in detail.

Composite laminates with negative through-the-thickness Poisson's ratios

A simple analysis using two dimensional lamination theory combined with the appropriate three dimensional anisotropic constitutive equation is presented to show some rather surprising results for the range of values of the through-the-thickness effective Poisson's ratio nu sub xz for angle ply laminates. Results for graphite-epoxy show that the through-the-thickness effective Poisson's ratio can range from a high of 0.49 for a 90 laminate to a low of -0.21 for a + or - 25s laminate. It is shown that negative values of nu sub xz are also possible for other laminates.

Spacelab system analysis: The modified free access protocol: An access protocol for communication systems with periodic and Poisson traffic

The protocol definition and terminal hardware for the modified free access protocol, a communications protocol similar to Ethernet, are developed. A MFA protocol simulator and a CSMA/CD math model are also developed. The protocol is tailored to communication systems where the total traffic may be divided into scheduled traffic and Poisson traffic. The scheduled traffic should occur on a periodic basis but may occur after a given event such as a request for data from a large number of stations. The Poisson traffic will include alarms and other random traffic. The purpose of the protocol is to guarantee that scheduled packets will be delivered without collision. This is required in many control and data collection systems. The protocol uses standard Ethernet hardware and software requiring minimum modifications to an existing system. The modification to the protocol only affects the Ethernet transmission privileges and does not effect the Ethernet receiver.

A Poisson equation formulation for pressure calculations in penalty finite element models for viscous incompressible flows

The calculation of pressures when the penalty-function approximation is used in finite-element solutions of laminar incompressible flows is addressed. A Poisson equation for the pressure is formulated that involves third derivatives of the velocity field. The second derivatives appearing in the weak formulation of the Poisson equation are calculated from the C0 velocity approximation using a least-squares method. The present scheme is shown to be efficient, free of spurious oscillations, and accurate. Examples of applications are given and compared with results obtained using mixed formulations.

Multitasking domain decomposition fast Poisson solvers on the Cray Y-MP

The results of multitasking implementation of a domain decomposition fast Poisson solver on eight processors of the Cray Y-MP are presented. The object of this research is to study the performance of domain decomposition methods on a Cray supercomputer and to analyze the performance of different multitasking techniques using highly parallel algorithms. Two implementations of multitasking are considered: macrotasking (parallelism at the subroutine level) and microtasking (parallelism at the do-loop level). A conventional FFT-based fast Poisson solver is also multitasked. The results of different implementations are compared and analyzed. A speedup of over 7.4 on the Cray Y-MP running in a dedicated environment is achieved for all cases.

Algorithm Calculates Cumulative Poisson Distribution

Algorithm calculates accurate values of cumulative Poisson distribution under conditions where other algorithms fail because numbers are so small (underflow) or so large (overflow) that computer cannot process them. Factors inserted temporarily to prevent underflow and overflow. Implemented in CUMPOIS computer program described in "Cumulative Poisson Distribution Program" (NPO-17714).

Climatology of Station Storm Rainfall in the Continental United States: Parameters of the Bartlett-Lewis and Poisson Rectangular Pulses Models

The parameters of two stochastic models of point rainfall, the Bartlett-Lewis model and the Poisson rectangular pulses model, are estimated for each month of the year from the historical records of hourly precipitation at more than seventy first-order stations in the continental United States. The parameters are presented both in tabular form and as isopleths on maps. The Poisson rectangular pulses parameters are useful in implementing models of the land surface water balance. The Bartlett-Lewis parameters are useful in disaggregating precipitation to a time period shorter than that of existing observations. Information is also included on a floppy disk.

Holographic study of non-affine deformation in copper foam with a negative Poisson's ratio of -0.8

While conventional foams have positive Poisson's ratios (become smaller in cross-section when stretched and larger when compressed), foam materials have recently been defined which possess 'reentrant' cellular architectures; in these, inwardly-protruding cell ribs are responsible for negative Poisson's ratio behavior, yielding greater resilience than conventional foams. Double-exposure holographic interferometry is presently used to examine the microdeformation of a reentrant copper foam. Attention is given to the nonaffine (inhomogeneous) deformation of this foam.

A Study of Poisson's Ratio in the Yield Region

In the yield region of the stress-strain curve the variation in Poisson's ratio from the elastic to the plastic value is most pronounced. This variation was studied experimentally by a systematic series of tests on several aluminum alloys. The tests were conducted under simple tensile and compressive loading along three orthogonal axes. A theoretical variation of Poisson's ratio for an orthotropic solid was obtained from dilatational considerations. The assumptions used in deriving the theory were examined by use of the test data and were found to be in reasonable agreement with experimental evidence.

Validation of the Poisson Stochastic Radiative Transfer Model

A new approach to validation of the Poisson stochastic radiative transfer method is proposed. In contrast to other validations of stochastic models, the main parameter of the Poisson model responsible for cloud geometrical structure - cloud aspect ratio - is determined entirely by matching measurements and calculations of the direct solar radiation. If the measurements of the direct solar radiation is unavailable, it was shown that there is a range of the aspect ratios that allows the stochastic model to accurately approximate the average measurements of surface downward and cloud top upward fluxes. Realizations of the fractionally integrated cascade model are taken as a prototype of real measurements.

Error-Rate Bounds for Coded PPM on a Poisson Channel

Equations for computing tight bounds on error rates for coded pulse-position modulation (PPM) on a Poisson channel at high signal-to-noise ratio have been derived. These equations and elements of the underlying theory are expected to be especially useful in designing codes for PPM optical communication systems. The equations and the underlying theory apply, more specifically, to a case in which a) At the transmitter, a linear outer code is concatenated with an inner code that includes an accumulator and a bit-to-PPM-symbol mapping (see figure) [this concatenation is known in the art as "accumulate-PPM" (abbreviated "APPM")]; b) The transmitted signal propagates on a memoryless binary-input Poisson channel; and c) At the receiver, near-maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding is effected through an iterative process. Such a coding/modulation/decoding scheme is a variation on the concept of turbo codes, which have complex structures, such that an exact analytical expression for the performance of a particular code is intractable. However, techniques for accurately estimating the performances of turbo codes have been developed. The performance of a typical turbo code includes (1) a "waterfall" region consisting of a steep decrease of error rate with increasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at low to moderate SNR, and (2) an "error floor" region with a less steep decrease of error rate with increasing SNR at moderate to high SNR. The techniques used heretofore for estimating performance in the waterfall region have differed from those used for estimating performance in the error-floor region. For coded PPM, prior to the present derivations, equations for accurate prediction of the performance of coded PPM at high SNR did not exist, so that it was necessary to resort to time-consuming simulations in order to make such predictions. The present derivation makes it unnecessary to perform such time-consuming simulations.

Rayleigh-Sommerfield Diffraction vs Fresnel-Kirchhoff, Fourier Propagation and Poisson's Spot

The boundary conditions imposed on the diffraction problem in order to obtain the Fresnel-Kirchhoff (FK) solution are well-known to be mathematically inconsistent and to be violated by the solution when the observation point is close to the diffracting screen 1-3. These problems are absent in the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld (RS) solution. The difference between RS and FK is in the inclination factor and is usually immaterial because the inclination factor is approximated by unity. But when this approximation is not valid, FK can lead to unacceptable answers. Calculating the on-axis intensity of Poisson s spot provides a critical test, a test passed by RS and failed by FK. FK fails because (a) convergence of the integral depends on how it is evaluated and (b) when the convergence problem is xed, the predicted amplitude at points near the obscuring disk is not consistent with the assumed boundary conditions.

Physics-based stabilized finite element approximations of the Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations

We present and analyze two stabilized finite element methods for solving numerically the Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations. The stabilization we consider is carried out by using a shock detector and a discrete graph Laplacian operator for the ion equations, whereas the discrete equation for the electric potential need not be stabilized. Discrete solutions stemmed from the first algorithm preserve both maximum and minimum discrete principles. For the second algorithm, its discrete solutions are conceived so that they hold discrete principles and obey an entropy law provided that an acuteness condition is imposed for meshes. Remarkably the latter is found to be unconditionally stable. We validate our methodology through transient numerical experiments that show convergence toward steady-state solutions.

A tensor train-based isogeometric solver for large-scale 3D poisson problems

We introduce a three-dimensional (3D), fully tensor train (TT) assembled isogeometric analysis (IGA) framework, TT-IGA, for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). Our method reformulates IGA discrete operators into TT format, enabling efficient compression and computation. Geometry evaluations use the original NURBS description at sampling points and TT approximation is applied to geometry-derived coefficient fields and discrete operators. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed TT-IGA framework on the three-dimensional Poisson equation, achieving substantial reductions in memory and computational cost without compromising solution quality.

Nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann solutions for charged parallel plates: When opposite charges repel

I present an exact solution of the Poisson–Boltzmann equation for two parallel plates and discuss the solution properties. I discuss in more detail plates with opposite charges: In this case, there are two critical separations, L c,1 < L c,2 . For separations less than L c,1 , the force between plates is repulsive. It switches to attractive at L c,1 , but with the electric potential having the same sign on both plates. For L > L c,2 , the force remains attractive, and the potential at the plates has the same sign as the charge on each plate. I also describe charge regulation, determined by pK a , and provide formulas for both the critical distance where oppositely charged plates repel and their charging process. Finally, the implications of these results for the nanoparticle assembly, as driven by electrostatic interactions, are also discussed.

Convolutional Non-Homogeneous Poisson Process and its Application to Wildfire Ignition Risk Quantification for Power Delivery Networks

To quantify wildfire ignition risks on power delivery networks, the current practice predominantly relies on the empirically calculated fire danger indices, which may not well capture the effects of dynamically changing environmental factors. This article proposes a spatio-temporal point process model, known as the Convolutional Non-homogeneous Poisson Process (cNHPP), and applies the model to quantify wildfire ignition risks for power delivery networks. The proposed model captures both the current (i.e., instantaneous) and cumulative (i.e., historical) effects of key environmental processes (i.e., covariates) on wildfire risks, as well as the spatio-temporal dependency among different segments of the power delivery network. The computation and interpretation of the intensity function are thoroughly investigated. We apply the proposed approach to estimate wildfire ignition risks on major transmission lines in California, using historical fire data, meteorological and vegetation data obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Here, a comprehensive comparison study is performed to show the applicability and predictive capability of the proposed approach.
