Data management for Large Space Telescope

The data management system for the Large Space Telescope (LST) must be capable of meeting requirements of 160 million bits per 95 min orbit with a bit error rate of less than 0.00001 for data. The system will be supported by the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System of the Space Tracking and Data Network. The on-board system includes a general purpose computer that controls the vehicle as a stable observation platform and the array of instruments used for data collection. The ground-based system comprises a Mission Operations Center (MOC), a Science Institute where instrument data is processed, and a communications service for the space and point-to-point data flow. The allocation of hardware and software between on-board and ground-based components to achieve design objectives of maximum flexibility at minimum cost is discussed.

A stone's throw into the universe: A memoir

Early goals in experimental astronomy are recalled. Physio-chemical properties of the atmosphere were studied by observing the tracks and point-to-point spectra of fast particles from artificial meteors. Some of these self-luminous pellets were fired from an Aerobee rocket in 1958.

The response of fluoroscopic image intensifier-TV systems

Three different types of X-ray fluoroscopic TV chains were investigated: two standard clinical units, one with a vidicon camera tube, the other with a plumbicon camera tube; and the third was a large flat-screen unit. In each an X-ray beam generated at 100 kVp was passed through 10 cm of H2O before aluminum absorbers of varying thickness were introduced. Five video recordings were made at each absorber thickness. The video image was digitized directly from the disk recording and quantized into 128 gray levels. The five recordings were averaged on a point-to-point basis, and the central 900 averaged points were again averaged to yield a value for the gray level assigned to each particular image. This 30 by 30 matrix of points corresponds to input screen areas of 29, 8.2, and 3.6 sq cm for the three units investigated.

The throughput of packet broadcasting channels

A unified presentation of packet broadcasting theory is presented. Section II introduces the theory of packet broadcasting data networks. Section III provides some theoretical results on the performance of a packet broadcasting network when users have a variety of data rates. Section IV deals with packet broadcasting networks distributed in space, and in Section V some properties of power-limited packet broadcasting channels are derived, showing that the throughput of such channels can approach that of equivalent point-to-point channels.

Millimeter wave satellite concepts, volume 1

The identification of technologies necessary for development of millimeter spectrum communication satellites was examined from a system point of view. Development of methodology based on the technical requirements of potential services that might be assigned to millimeter wave bands for identifying the viable and appropriate technologies for future NASA millimeter research and development programs, and testing of this methodology with selected user applications and services were the goals of the program. The entire communications network, both ground and space subsystems was studied. Cost, weight, and performance models for the subsystems, conceptual design for point-to-point and broadcast communications satellites, and analytic relationships between subsystem parameters and an overall link performance are discussed along with baseline conceptual systems, sensitivity studies, model adjustment analyses, identification of critical technologies and their risks, and brief research and development program scenarios for the technologies judged to be moderate or extensive risks. Identification of technologies for millimeter satellite communication systems, and assessment of the relative risks of these technologies, was accomplished through subsystem modeling and link optimization for both point-to-point and broadcast applications.

Optimum horizontal guidance techniques for aircraft

Some problems of automatic guidance of an aircraft in the horizontal plane are described. The horizontal guidance tasks, which such a flight control system should be capable of performing, were identified as being of three types: guiding the aircraft from any initial location and initial heading to (1) any final location and heading; (2) intercept and fly along a line of specified direction; and (3) a final location with arbitrary final heading. Guidance problems such as capturing an ILS beam at a specified point on the beam, intercepting a VOR radial, and point-to-point navigation can be formulated in terms of these problems. The guidance laws minimize the arc distance to fly between initial and final conditions subject to constraints on the minimum turning radius.

Communication satellite services for special purpose users

The present study identifies potential satellite services, examines the technology necessary for efficient implementation of these services, and determines minimum service cost versus user network size. The generic satellite services evaluated comprise TV and radio distribution (for retransmission), video teleconferencing (interactive), audio/facsimile teleconferencing (interactive), multiplexed data/voice (point-to-point), and satellite-supported land mobile. Satellite costs are based on extrapolations from ongoing commercial satellite programs. Production methods, new technology, and effect of production quantities on present and future production costs are examined to provide information on earth station equipment cost versus the variable 'buy'. Six different launch vehicles from a Delta 2914 to a dedicated Shuttle and three frequency bands and both broadcast (no eclipse capability) and fixed service satellites are considered to assess the effect of satellite size on cost and performance. It is assumed that the user pays only for his prorata share of the space segment costs.

Bent glass optics

The paper describes how a glass strip may be bent to match any curve of large radius of curvature, to a high degree of accuracy, so that it may be used as a glancing incidence X-ray or extreme ultraviolet optical element. The desired match is obtained by applying a suitable combination of end couples and adjusting the cross-sectional moment of inertia along the length of the strip by varying its breadth. Two applications are described; a parabolic reflector for use as a laboratory X-ray collimator for testing mechanical collimators to be used in space instruments, and an elliptical reflector for point-to-point focussing. The latter device has been used for testing gratings in the X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regions and for concentrating radiation on the entrance slit of a spectrometer, with a resultant gain in speed and resolution. It is suggested that the technique may have other laboratory and space applications, which are briefly described.

Delta launch Canadian communications satellite Telesat-D (Anik-B)

Telesat-D (Anik-B) is the first of a series of three (Telesat-D, -E, -F) second generation satellites developed for Telesat/Canada. These second generation satellites will replace three first generation HS-333 satellites (Telesat-A, -B, -C) developed for Telesat/CNADA AND LAUNCHED BY Delta 2914 vehicles in 1972, 1973, and 1975 and successfully placed in orbit as Anik-A1, -A2, -A3. The Telesat-D(Anik-B) satellite will be place in sync-transfer orbit by a Delta 3914 launch vehicle, currently scheduled for launch on December 15, 1978. The Telesat-E and -F(Anik-C1 and -C2) missions are scheduled for launch on the Space Shuttle in 1981 to replace the function of the Anik-A2 and -A3 (Telesat-B, and -C) satellites. The Anik-B will provide point-to-point voice, TV, and data communications traffic to Canada's ten provinces.

Computer-aided analysis of Landsat data for surveying Texas coastal zone environments

The feasibility of using machine-aided processing of Landsat data to inventory environmental units was studied by analyzing geometrically corrected and spatially registered Landsat data collected over the Matagorda Bay area of the Texas coastal estuarine system. A clustering algorithm (nonsupervised processor) was used to divide the data into groups of sample points of similar spectral characteristics, and correlation of spectral classes with reference data on a point-to-point basis showed the coastal features exhibit unique spectral variations. Use of a maximum likelihood algorithm permitted discrimination of 13 terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Characteristics of propeller noise on an aircraft fuselage related to interior noise transmission

Exterior noise was measured on the fuselage of a twin-engine, light aircraft at four values of engine rpm in ground static tests and at forward speeds up to 36 m/s in taxi tests. Propeller noise levels, spectra, and correlations were determined using a horizontal array of seven flush-mounted microphones and a vertical array of four flush-mounted microphones in the propeller plane. The measured levels and spectra are compared with predictions based on empirical and analytical methods for static and taxi conditions. Trace wavelengths of the propeller noise field, obtained from point-to-point correlations, are compared with the aircraft sidewall structural dimensions, and some analytical results are presented that suggest the sensitivity of interior noise transmission to variations of the propeller noise characteristics.

Application of the pseudostate theory to the three-body Lambert problem

The pseudostate theory, which approximates three-body trajectories by overlapping the conic effects of both massive bodies on the third body, has been used to solve boundary value problems. Frequently, the approach to the secondary is quite close, as in interplanetary gravity assist trajectories or satellite tour trajectories. In this case the orbit with respect to the primary is radically changed so that perturbation techniques are time consuming, yet higher accuracy than point-to-point conics (V-infinity matching) is necessary. This method reduces the solution of the three-body Lambert problem to solving two conic Lambert problems and inverting a 7 x 7 matrix, the components of which are all found analytically. Typically 90-95% of the point-to-point conic error with respect to an integrated trajectory is eliminated.

Air turbulence measurements in and below cumulus congestus over mountainous terrain

Consideration is given to the definition and application to air turbulence measurements over mountainous terrain of the ensemble averaging operator in the second-order turbulent transfer model of moist, precipitating mesoscale systems developed by Manton and Cotton (1977) as a first step in the formulation of a unified mesoscale turbulence theory. The use of running means to smooth out point-to-point data variability is proposed as a means of avoiding certain of the problems associated with ensemble averaging, and is applied to airborne velocity measurements in cumulus congestus over South Park, Colorado. It is found that, in general, vertical transport of any cloud parameter will be primarily eddy transport in the mesoscale modeling of cloud processes.

Ku-band multiple beam antenna

The frequency reuse capability is demonstrated for a Ku-band multiple beam antenna which provides contiguous low sidelobe spot beams for point-to-point communications between any two points within the continental United States (CONUS), or regional coverage beams for direct broadcast systems. A spot beam antenna in the 14/21 GHz band which provides contiguous overlapping beams covering CONUS and two discrete beams covering Hawaii and Alaska were designed, developed, and tested. Two reflector antennas are required for providing contiguous coverage of CONUS. Each is comprised of one offset parabolic reflector, one flat polarization diplexer, and two separate planar array feeds. This antenna system provides contiguous spot beam coverage of CONUS, utilizing 15 beams. Also designed, developed and demonstrated was a shaped contoured beam antenna system which provides contiguous four time zone coverage of CONUS from a single offset parabolic reflector incorporating one flat polarization diplexer and two separate planar array feeds. The beams which illuminate the eastern time zone and the mountain time zone are horizontally polarized, while the beams which illuminate the central time zone and the pacific time zone are vertically polarized. Frequency reuse is achieved by amplitude and polarization isolation.

High spectral and spatial resolution observations of the 12.28 micron emission from H2 in the Orion molecular cloud

The pure rotational S(2) line of molecular hydrogen at 12.28 microns was looked for in 44 positions in the Orion moleular cloud with 6 in. beams and 35 km/s spectral resolution; it was detected in 27 positions. Emission was observed over a velocity range of + or - 100 km/s. The lines are approximately symmetric, and have full widths at half maximum ranging from 100 km/s down to the resolution limit. The distribution of intensities and line shapes is largely consistent with that seen in the 2 micron hydrogen transitions. However, unexpectedly complex line profiles and point-to-point variations in linear shapes appear, particularly in the region near IRc9.
