Mechanistic Insights into Superlattice Transformation at a Single Nanocrystal Level Using Nanobeam Electron Diffraction

Understanding the mechanism and ultimately directing nanocrystal (NC) superlattice assembly and attachment have important implications on future advances in this emerging field. Here, we use 4D-STEM to investigate a monolayer of PbS NCs at various stages of the transformation from a hexatic assembly to a nonconnected square-like superlattice over large fields of view. Maps of nanobeam electron diffraction patterns acquired with an electron microscope pixel array detector (EMPAD) offer unprecedented detail into the 3D crystallographic alignment of the polyhedral NCs. Our analysis reveals that superlattice transformation is dominated by translation of prealigned NCs strongly coupled along the <11n>AL direction and occurs stochastically and gradually throughout single grains. We validate the generality of the proposed mechanism by examining the structure of analogous PbSe NC assemblies using conventional transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction. Here, the experimental results presented here provide new mechanistic insights into NC self-assembly and oriented attachment.

Valence Disproportionation of GeS in the PbS Matrix Forms Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 Inclusions with Conduction Band Alignment Leading to High n-Type Thermoelectric Performance

Converting waste heat into useful electricity using solid-state thermoelectrics has a potential for enormous global energy savings. Lead chalcogenides are among the most prominent thermoelectric materials, whose performance decreases with an increase in chalcogen amounts (e.g., PbTe>PbSe>PbS). Herein, we demonstrate the simultaneous optimization of the electrical and thermal transport properties of PbS-based compounds by alloying with GeS. The addition of GeS triggers a complex cascade of beneficial events as follows: Ge 2+ substitution in Pb 2+ and discordant off-center behavior; formation of Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 as stable second phase inclusions through valence disproportionation of Ge 2+ to Ge0 and Ge 4+ . PbS and Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 exhibit good conduction band energy alignment that preserves the high electron mobility; the formation of Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 increases the electron carrier concentration by introducing S vacancies. Sb doping as the electron donor produces a large power factor and low lattice thermal conductivity (κ lat ) of ~0.61 Wm -1 K -1 . The highest performance was obtained for the 14% GeS-alloyed samples, which exhibited an increased room temperature electron mobility of ~121 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for 3 × 10 19 cm -3 carrier density, and a ZT, of 1.32 at 923 K. This is ~ 55% greater that the corresponding Sb-doped PbS sample and is one of the highest reported for the n-type PbS system. Moreover, the average ZT (ZT avg ) of ~0.76 from 400 to 923 K is the highest for PbS-based systems.

Spin-exchange carrier multiplication in manganese-doped colloidal quantum dots

Abstract Carrier multiplication is a process whereby a kinetic energy of a carrier relaxes via generation of additional electron–hole pairs (excitons). This effect has been extensively studied in the context of advanced photoconversion as it could boost the yield of generated excitons. Carrier multiplication is driven by carrier–carrier interactions that lead to excitation of a valence-band electron to the conduction band. Normally, the rate of phonon-assisted relaxation exceeds that of Coulombic collisions, which limits the carrier multiplication yield. Here we show that this limitation can be overcome by exploiting not ‘direct’ but ‘spin-exchange’ Coulomb interactions in manganese-doped core/shell PbSe/CdSe quantum dots. In these structures, carrier multiplication occurs via two spin-exchange steps. First, an exciton generated in the CdSe shell is rapidly transferred to a Mn dopant. Then, the excited Mn ion undergoes spin-flip relaxation via a spin-conserving pathway, which creates two excitons in the PbSe core. Due to the extremely fast, subpicosecond timescales of spin-exchange interactions, the Mn-doped quantum dots exhibit an up-to-threefold enhancement of the multiexciton yield versus the undoped samples, which points towards the considerable potential of spin-exchange carrier multiplication in advanced photoconversion.

Systematic over-estimation of lattice thermal conductivity in materials with electrically-resistive grain boundaries

Reducing the thermal conductivity κ of a material via nano-structuring to create small grain sizes is one of the most common strategies to improve thermoelectric materials. In such polycrystalline materials heat carrying phonons are scattered at the grain boundaries, which directly improves the thermoelectric quality factor and ultimately the figure-of-merit zT. In some cases, however, such as in Mg 3 Sb 2 , SnSe, and Mg 2 Si an opposite trend is found where higher lattice thermal conductivity reported in small grain polycrystalline material than in large grain or single crystal materials. This unphysical result indicates a problem with the conventional use of the Wiedemann–Franz law. Here, we trace this problematic finding to the electrical resistance at the grain boundaries, which leads to an overestimation of the phonon or lattice contribution of the thermal conductivity κ L . In materials with significant grain boundary electrical resistance, the estimated electronic contribution to the thermal conductivity LσT is low because the measured electrical conductivity σ is low. However within the grain electrons may still be transporting more heat than the total conductivity suggests, leading to an overestimation of κ L if the conventional κ L = κ – LσT is used with the measured values of κ and σ. Here, the overestimation of κL in small-grain samples is shown to be pervasive across a broad range of thermoelectric materials, including Mg 3 Sb 2 , Mg 2 Si, PbTe, PbSe, SnSe, (Hf,Zr)CoSb, CoSb 3 , and Bi 2 Te 3 alloys, and a correction is necessary to properly understand and predict their charge and heat transport.

Effects of catalyst droplets on wire growth and the resulting branched structures during VLS growth

Vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method is vastly employed to grow hierarchical structures with unique properties. However, key questions remain, such as what controls the branched structures and what the roles of catalyst droplet size are during the growth. Here, an in-depth understanding of the kinetics of the nucleation, growth, and subsequent coalescence processes of Bi liquid catalyst droplets is provided by direct observation of PbSe branched wire growth in an environmental transmission electron microscope. This brings a kinetic control of the branch density by varying the parameters, such as temperature. In addition, the dependence of wire growth rate on the catalyst droplet size is revealed, i.e., the smaller the catalyst size the larger the wire growth rate, unlike the wire growth controlled by Gibbs-Thomson effect, possibly due to different mass transport pathways and atomic surface diffusion. These results extend the fundamental understanding of the VLS growth mechanism of branched structures and benefit the structure design of hierarchical materials with tailored properties.

Elimination of the bias-stress effect in ligand-free quantum dot field-effect transistors

Field-effect transistors (FETs) made from colloidal quantum dot (QD) solids commonly suffer from current–voltage hysteresis caused by the bias-stress effect (BSE), which complicates fundamental studies of charge transport in QD solids and the use of QD FETs in electronics. Here, we show that the BSE can be eliminated in n-channel PbSe QD FETs by first removing the QD ligands with a dose of H 2 S gas and then infilling the QD films with alumina by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The H 2 S-treated, alumina-infilled FETs have stable, hysteresis-free device characteristics (total short-term stability), indefinite air stability (total long-term stability), and a high electron mobility of up to 14 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , making them attractive for QD circuitry and optoelectronic devices. The BSE-free devices are utilized to conclusively establish the dependence of the electron mobility on temperature and QD diameter. We demonstrate that the BSE in these devices is caused by both electron trapping at the QD surface and proton drift within the film. The H 2 S/alumina chemistry produces ligand-free PbSe/PbS/Al 2 O 3 interfaces that lack the traps that cause the electronic part of the BSE, while full alumina infilling stops the proton motion responsible for the ionic part of the BSE. In conclusion, our matrix engineering approach should aid efforts to eliminate the BSE, boost carrier mobilities, and improve charge transport in other types of nanocrystal solids.

Targeted synthesis of predicted metastable compounds using modulated elemental reactants

Three metastable compounds predicted to be kinetically stable using an “island” approach were successfully synthesized from designed modulated elemental reactants. Fe0.8V0.2Se2 was synthesized by depositing ultrathin elemental layers in a V|Fe|Se sequence to control the local composition. An alloyed rock salt structured Pb3Mn2Se5 constituent layer, which does not exist as a bulk compound, was synthesized in the heterostructure (Pb3Mn2Se5)0.6VSe2 by depositing a precursor with a V|Se|Pb|Se|Mn|Se|Pb|Se|Mn|Se|Pb|Se sequence of elemental layers that mimicked the compositional profile of the targeted heterostructure. The heterostructure (PbSe)1+δ(FeSe2)2 was prepared by depositing a precursor with a repeating layering sequence of Fe|Pb|Fe|Se, where each sequence contains the number of atoms required to form a single unit cell. In all three systems, the local compositions in the layer sequence kinetically favored the nucleation and growth of the targeted products during the deposition. The diffusion lengths to form the targeted compounds were short, and the diffusion was limited by postdeposition low temperature annealing to favor the growth of the targeted compounds and avoid the decomposition into a mixture of thermodynamically stable compounds.

Acceleration of Near-IR Emission through Efficient Surface Passivation in Cd 3 P 2 Quantum Dots

Fast near-IR (NIR) emitters are highly valuable in telecommunications and biological imaging. The most established NIR emitters are epitaxially grown In x Ga 1-x As quantum dots (QDs), but epitaxial growth has several disadvantages. Colloidal synthesis is a viable alternative that produces a few NIR-emitting materials, but they suffer from long photoluminescence (PL) times. These long PL times are intrinsic in some NIR materials (PbS, PbSe) but are attributed to emission from bright trapped carrier states in others. We show that Cd 3 P 2 QDs possess substantial trap emission with radiative times >10 1 ns. Surface passivation through shell growth or coordination of Lewis acids is shown to accelerate the NIR emission from Cd 3 P 2 QDs by decreasing the amount of trap emission. This finding brings us one step closer to the application of colloidally synthesized QDs as quantum emitters.

Advances in Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) Nanolaminate Synthesis of Thermoelectric Films in Porous Templates for Improved Seebeck Coefficient

Thermoelectrics is a green renewable energy technology which can significantly contribute to power generation due to its potential in generating electricity out of waste heat. The main challenge for the development of thermoelectrics is its low conversion efficiency. One key strategy to improve conversion efficiency is reducing the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials. In this paper, the state-of-the-art progresses made in improving thermoelectric materials are reviewed and discussed, focusing on phononic engineering via applying porous templates and ALD deposited nanolaminates structure. The effect of nanolaminates structure and porous templates on Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, and hence in figure of merit zT of different types of materials system, including PnCs, lead chalcogenide-based nanostructured films on planar and porous templates, ZnO-based superlattice, and hybrid organic-inorganic superlattices, will be reviewed and discussed.
