Prospective Clinical Investigation of the Efficacy of Combination Radiation Therapy With Immune Checkpoint Inhibition

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) lead to durable responses in a subset of patients with cancer, but most patients do not respond to ICI, prompting interest in combining immunotherapy with other therapeutic regimens. Preclinical evidence supports the potential for therapeutic synergy between immunotherapy and radiation therapy through modulation of the tumor microenvironment and antitumor immune responses. Local therapy also has the potential to overcome localized sites of relative immune suppression and resistance. Prospective clinical trials have been initiated to test these hypotheses in the clinic as well as to investigate the toxicities and adverse events associated with combination immunotherapy and radiation therapy. In this review, we discuss the emerging results from prospective clinical trials of combination immunotherapy and radiation therapy, the safety and efficacy of their combination, concordance with preclinical and retrospective data, and some of the remaining open questions to be addressed by future clinical trials.

Prospects for detecting UF6 hydrolysis intermediates by mass spectrometry, resonance Raman, and NQR spectroscopy

Simulations are performed to consider several spectrometric and spectroscopic candidates for elucidating the mechanism of the hydrolysis of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). This study is among the first to benchmark the def-mTZVP basis sets for actinide-containing molecules, and it is shown to be a suitable basis set for surveying geometrical structures and vibrational spectra when used in conjunction with density functional theory. An experiment is proposed coupling mass spectrometric ion selection with vibrational spectroscopy, and supporting infrared and Raman spectral simulations demonstrate that ionization blue-shifts bands and can change their qualitative features. Ultraviolet resonance Raman is shown to have good prospects for discriminating U–O–U bridged intermediates, evidence for which was observed recently [L. E. McNamara et al., J. Phys. Chem. A 130, 775–786 (2026)]. As a more speculative approach, we also consider the prospect of addressing 233U or 235U nuclei by quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy for assigning early stage intermediate complexes. In doing so, we provide a first order-of-magnitude estimate for the collision-induced NQR signal for the UF6 dimer, which is of interest for the interpretation of a fast decoherence time observed in liquid-phase nuclear magnetic resonance. Having provided critical insights into the formation and stability of UF6 hydrolysis intermediates in previous studies, this computational spectroscopy survey is expected to help guide and expedite future laboratory campaigns.

Prospects for exotic h → 4 τ decays in single and di-Higgs boson production at the LHC and future hadron colliders

We study the prospects for observing exotic decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson h into light beyond the Standard Model scalars a with mass m a ≲ m h / 2 in the single Higgs and Higgs pair production channels at the high luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Discovery prospects for single Higgs production in the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion modes with the Higgs boson decaying via the exotic mode h → a a → 4 τ are analyzed at the HL-LHC. The projected sensitivity for exotic Higgs decays in the nonresonant Higgs pair production channel p p → h h → ( h → b b ¯ ) ( h → a a → 4 τ ) → 2 b 4 τ at the HL-LHC and a future s = 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-hh) are also estimated. Furthermore, we study HL-LHC’s potential reach for the Higgs-strahlung process in the 2 b 4 τ channel, taking into account the contamination from nonresonant Higgs pair production. Finally, the potential reach for resonant Higgs pair production in the 2 b 4 τ channel at the HL-LHC is also explored for several choices of { m H , m a } . Our studies suggest that significant improvements over existing bounds are achievable in several production channels, motivating new dedicated searches for h → a a → 4 τ at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Final Search for Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations with the PROSPECT-I Detector at HFIR

The PROSPECT experiment is designed to perform precise searches for antineutrino disappearance at short distances (7–9 m) from compact nuclear reactor cores. This Letter reports results from a new neutrino oscillation analysis performed using the complete data sample from the PROSPECT-I detector operated at the High Flux Isotope Reactor in 2018. The analysis uses a multiperiod selection of inverse beta decay neutrino interactions with reduced backgrounds and enhanced statistical power to set limits on electron neutrino disappearance caused by mixing with sterile neutrinos with 0.2–20 eV 2 mass splittings. Inverse beta decay positron energy spectra from six different reactor-detector distance ranges are found to be statistically consistent with one another, as would be expected in the absence of sterile neutrino oscillations. The data excludes at 95% confidence level the existence of sterile neutrinos in regions above 3 eV 2 previously unexplored by terrestrial experiments, including all space below 10 eV 2 suggested by the recently strengthened Gallium Anomaly. The best-fit point of the Neutrino-4 reactor experiment’s claimed observation of short-baseline oscillation is ruled out at more than 5 standard deviations.

Urban Energy and Climate: Prospects for a Sustainable Transition

With the continuous migration of people towards metropolitan areas in search of employment, the demands for core services and energy, coupled with an increasing awareness of the impact of climate change, have placed the management and planning of global urban energy under a lot of pressure. Trends toward urban energy service transformations that offer greater affordability, reliability, efficiency and adaptability provide hope for a global sustainable future. At the same time, there are also limits to these transitions, as well as risks involved. For example, on one end of the spectrum, our urban energy future includes land use sprawl, high fossil fuel use, pollution, and unhealthy urban conditions. On the other side of this transition spectrum is more energy choices, and healthier, more livable cities, along with less energy use and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. What the future might hold for transforming the world's cities depends upon an understanding of the risks of current trajectories and the opportunities for and limitations to developing sustainable urban energy systems. This edited volume brings together leading experts on the prospects and challenges of urban energy innovation and on related-economic, social and environmental sustainability transitions. The focus of the volume is on multidisciplinary reviews, research informing technologies and policies for sustainability, and analytical insights addressing rapid urbanization and changes across a diverse typology of global cities. The volume will include an overview of the current state of urban energy systems. It will also document and evaluate urban energy prospects for a sustainable, resilient future.

Constraining Mornings and Evenings on Distant Worlds: A new Semianalytical Approach and Prospects with Transmission Spectroscopy

The technique of transmission spectroscopy—the variation of a planetary radius with wavelength due to opacity sources in the planet’s terminator region—has been one of the most successful in the characterization of exoplanet atmospheres to date, providing key insights into the composition and structure of these distant worlds. A common assumption made when using this technique, however, is that the variations are the same in the entire terminator region. In reality, the morning and evening terminators might have distinct temperature, pressure, and thus compositional profiles due to the inherent 3D nature of the planet, which would, in turn, give rise to different spectra on each side of it. Constraining those might be fundamental for our understanding of not only the weather patterns in these distant worlds but also the planetary formation signatures that might only be possible to extract once these features are well understood. Motivated by this physical picture, in this work, we perform a detailed study of the observational prospects of detecting this effect. We present an open-source semianalytical framework with which this information can be extracted directly from transit light curves and perform a detailed study of the prospects of detecting the effect with current missions, such as TESS, and upcoming ones, such as JWST. Our results show that these missions show great promise for the detection of this effect. Transmission spectroscopy studies with JWST, in particular, could provide spectra of each of the limbs, allowing us to convey 3D information previously accessible only via phase curves.

Feasibility study of a swept frequency electromagnetic probe (SWEEP) using inductive coupling for the determination of subsurface conductivity of the earth and water prospecting in arid regions

Techniques developed for electromagnetic probing of the lunar interior, and techniques developed for the generation of high power audio frequencies were combined to make practical a magnetic inductive coupling system for the rapid measurement of ground conductivity profiles which are helpful when prospecting for the presence and quality of subsurface water. A system which involves the measurement of the direction, intensity, and time phase of the magnetic field observed near the surface of the earth at a distance from a horizontal coil energized so as to create a field that penetrates the earth was designed and studied to deduce the conductivity and stratification of the subsurface. Theoretical studies and a rudimentary experiment in an arid region showed that the approach is conceptually valid and that this geophysical prospecting technique can be developed for the economical exploration of subterranean water resources.

Experimental application of LANDSAT to geobotanical prospecting of serpentine outcrops in the central Appalachian Piedmont of North America

The use of LANDSAT as a tool for geobotanical prospecting was studied in a 13,137 sq km area from southeastern Pennsylvania to northern Virginia. Vegetation differences between known serpentine and non-sepentine sites were most easily distinguished on early summer images. A multispectral signature was derived from vegetation of two known serpentine sites and a map was produced of 159 similar signatures of vegetation in the study area. Authenticity of the serpentine nature of the mapped sites was checked via geochemical analysis of collected soils from 14% of the sites. Overall success of geobotanical prospecting was about 35% for the total study area. When vegetation distribution was taken into account, the success rate was 67% for the region north of the Potomac, demonstrates the effectiveness of the multispectral satellite for quickly and accurately locating mineral sensitive vegetation communities over vast tracts of land.

Prospects for detecting other planetary systems

Prospects for the detection of extrasolar planetary systems using ground and space-based techniques are surveyed. The likely observable manifestations of another planetary system are considered, including angular displacements in stellar position, Doppler shifts in stellar radiation and stellar dimming due to the transit of an unseen companion (indirect techniques), and direct evidence of the thermal and reflected components of planetary radiation. The current status and prospects for future improvement of ground-based detection based on astrometric and radial velocity measurements are reviewed, and the limitations of future space-based systems that may be used in astrometric or direct searches for other planetary systems, the IRAS and the Space Telescope, are discussed. It is concluded that a comprehensive search program must involve both ground- and space-based instruments.
