An absolute pressure sensor (e.g., the diaphragm of a capacitance manometer) was subjected to a superimposed potential to effectively reduce the mechanical stiffness of the sensor. This substantially increases the sensitivity of the sensor and is particularly useful in vacuum gauges. An oscillating component of the superimposed potential induced vibrations of the sensor. The phase of these vibrations with respect to that of the oscillating component was monitored, and served to initiate an automatic adjustment of the static component of the superimposed potential, so as to bring the sensor into resonance at the frequency of the oscillating component. This establishes a selected sensitivity for the sensor, since a definite relationship exists between resonant frequency and sensitivity.
In order to develop a computer program able to model the frictional heating of metals in high pressure oxygen or nitrogen a number of additions have been made to the frictional heating model originally developed for tests in low pressure helium. These additions include: (1) a physical property package for the gases to account for departures from the ideal gas state; (2) two methods for spatial discretization (finite differences with quadratic interpolation or orthogonal collocation on finite elements) which substantially reduce the computer time required to solve the transient heat balance; (3) more efficient programs for the integration of the ordinary differential equations resulting from the discretization of the partial differential equations; and (4) two methods for determining the best-fit parameters via minimization of the mean square error (either a direct search multivariable simplex method or a modified Levenburg-Marquardt algorithm). The resulting computer program has been shown to be accurate, efficient and robust for determining the heat flux or friction coefficient vs. time at the interface of the stationary and rotating samples.
An apparatus for regulating pressure of treatment fluid during ophthalmic procedures is described. Flow sensing and pressure regulating diaphragms are used to modulate a flow control valve. The pressure regulating diaphragm is connected to the flow control valve to urge the valve to an open position due to pressure being applied to the diaphragm by bias means such as a spring. The flow sensing diaphragm is mechanically connected to the flow control valve and urges it to an opened position because of the differential pressure on the diaphragm generated by a flow of incoming treatment fluid through an orifice in the diaphragm. A bypass connection with a variable restriction is connected in parallel relationship to the orifice to provide for adjusting the sensitivity of the flow sensing diaphragm. A multiple lever linkage system is utilized between the center of the second diaphragm and the flow control valve to multiply the force applied to the valve by the other diaphragm and reverse the direction of the force.
An apparatus developed by Marshall Space Flight Center for use in determining the impact sensitivity of engineering materials in liquid and gaseous oxygen at pressures greater than one atmosphere is described. This apparatus uses the impact tester described in ASTM D2512, ?Compatibility of Materials with Liquid Oxygen,' with the addition of a pressurized sample holder in place of the D2512 anvil region.

Distillation apparatus in the form of a U tube supplies small amounts of pure cesium vapor at constant pressure to a thermionic converter. The upstream leg of the U tube is connected to a vacuum pump to withdraw noncondensable impurities, the bottom portion serves as a reservoir for the liquid cesium.
Method and apparatus are disclosed for monitoring an oxygen partial pressure in an air mask and providing a tactile warning to the user. The oxygen partial pressure in the air mask is detected using an electrochemical sensor, the output signal from which is provided to a comparator. The comparator compares the output signal with a preset reference value or range of values representing acceptable oxygen partial pressures. If the output signal is different than the reference value or outside the range of values, the air mask is vibrated by a vibrating motor to alert the user to a potentially hypoxic condition.
Accurate dynamic pressure measurements are often difficult to make within small pyrotechnic devices, and transducer mounting difficulties can cause data anomalies that lead to erroneous conclusions. Delayed initial pressure response followed by data ringing has been observed when using miniaturized pressure transducer mounting adapters required to interface transducers to small test chambers. This delayed pressure response and ringing, combined with a high data acquisition rate, has complicated data analysis. This paper compares the output signal characteristics from different pressure transducer mounting options, where the passage distance from the transducer face to the pyrotechnic chamber is varied in length and diameter. By analyzing the data and understating the associated system dynamics, a more realistic understanding of the actual dynamic pressure variations is achieved. Three pressure transducer mounting configurations (elongated, standard, and face/flush mount) were simultaneously tested using NASA standard initiators in closed volume pressure bombs. This paper also presents results of these pressure transducer mounting configurations as a result of a larger NASA Engineering and Safety Center pyrovalve test project. Results from these tests indicate the improved performance of using face/flush mounted pressure transducers in this application. This type of mounting improved initial pressure measurement response time by approximately 19 s over standard adapter mounting, eliminating most of the lag time; provided a near step-function type initial pressure increase; and greatly reduced data ringing in high data acquisition rate systems. The paper goes on to discuss other issues associated with the firing and instrumentation that are important for the tester to understand.

Cooling of the fusion blanket first wall remains a significant challenge given the adverse conditions of heat and particle flux encountered near the plasma. Helium emerges as an attractive cooling candidate because of its chemical and neutronic inertness and separability from hydrogenic species (e.g. tritium). Because of the low thermal mass of helium, optimization of these coolant channels is warranted to provide high heat transfer performance at low pumping costs. Increasingly, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are employed to model and optimize these flow channels, and accompanying experimental data are needed to validate the predictions of these models. To provide the aforementioned experimental data, a high-pressure helium flow visualization upgrade has been designed for the Helium Flow Loop Experiment facility. This apparatus was built to American Society of Mechanical Engineers boiler and pressure vessel standards to withstand operating pressure of 4 MPa and mated to high-pressure glass windows. Seedless flow visualization is performed via high-speed background oriented schlieren (BOS), with image correlation used for time-resolved two-dimensional velocimetry at frequencies in excess of 60 kHz. Rectangular flow channel test articles are additively manufactured via laser powder bed fusion and installed into this visualization apparatus, with one-sided heating supplied by resistive heaters. In conclusion, the chosen test geometries were informed by prior CFD simulations, and the helium flow structures observed via BOS (detachment, recirculation, etc.) will be used for the validation of these accompanying models, in support of the design and optimization of blanket cooling channel configurations.
A method and apparatus for measuring intracranial pressure. In one embodiment, the method comprises the steps of generating an information signal that comprises components (e.g., pulsatile changes and slow changes) that are related to intracranial pressure and blood pressure, generating a reference signal comprising pulsatile components that are solely related to blood pressure, processing the information and reference signals to determine the pulsatile components of the information signal that have generally the same phase as the pulsatile components of the reference signal, and removing from the information signal the pulsatile components determined to have generally the same phase as the pulsatile components of the reference signal so as to provide a data signal having components wherein substantially all of the components are related to intracranial pressure.
A method and apparatus are presented for pressure testing the static pressure orifices and associated connections used in wind tunnels. A cylindrical module, having in one end an open hemispherical calibration pressure chamber separated from and surrounded by an annular vacuum chamber is placed over the orifice of the system to be tested. O-rings ensure seating and a vacuum seal between the chambered end of the module and the surface around the orifice: one O-ring separates the outer chamber from the outside environment. Ports lead from each of the chambers out the other end of the module to tubes connected to a control box consisting of calibration pressure and vacuum supply lines, bleeder valves, and gauges.
Acoustic apparatus for study of acoustic wave pressure-disturbance propagation in plasma
An apparatus for measuring indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of an internal combustion piston or rotary engine or of an external combustion engine such as a stirling engine is disclosed. An optical shaft encoder measures crankshaft angle of the engine. Changes in volume with respect to changes in crank angle of one or more cylinders (dV/d theta) is determined either empirically or algebraically from engine geometry and stored in a memory. As the crank angle changes, dV/d theta) is read from the memory and multiplied by chamber or cylinder pressure. The product (P dv/d theta) is then added to the total previously accumulated in the cycle. Each time theta changes by an amount equal to delta theta, the process is repeated. At the end of each engine cycle, the total is equal to the IMEP value for that cycle.
