Optical properties of materials at low temperature and their application to optical detection

A lumped model to represent the photodielectric effect is developed. An analog simulation for a sample in a microwave cavity with a static magnetic field is developed. A system to measure continuously the PDE is analyzed. A performance factor to compared PD detectors versus ac photoconductors is computed. The operating conditions are defined for the appropriate noise conditions. The detectivity of the detector is found to be limited by the semiconductor sample noise.

Applications of optical holography to applied mechanics.

This paper provides a brief summary of applications of optical holography and holographic interferometry to applied solid mechanics. Basic equations commonly used in fringe interpretation are described and used to reduce the data contained on holographic interferograms. A comparison of data obtained holographically with analytical prediction is given wherever possible. Applications contained herein include front surface physics, study of bomb breakup, transverse wave propagation, study of mode shapes of panels at elevated temperatures, nondestructive testing, and vibration analysis.

Power system applications of fiber optics

Power system applications of optical systems, primarily using fiber optics, are reviewed. The first section reviews fibers as components of communication systems. The second section deals with fiber sensors for power systems, reviewing the many ways light sources and fibers can be combined to make measurements. Methods of measuring electric field gradient are discussed. Optical data processing is the subject of the third section, which begins by reviewing some widely different examples and concludes by outlining some potential applications in power systems: fault location in transformers, optical switching for light fired thyristors and fault detection based on the inherent symmetry of most power apparatus. The fourth and final section is concerned with using optical fibers to transmit power to electric equipment in a high voltage situation, potentially replacing expensive high voltage low power transformers. JPL has designed small photodiodes specifically for this purpose, and fabricated and tested several samples. This work is described.

Novel applications of optical techniques to the study of buried semiconductor interfaces

Detailed electronic and structural information about buried semiconductor interfaces obtained through application of optical techniques is discussed. The measurements described include the determination of band discontinuities, strain, and disorder associated with semiconductor heterointerfaces. The contactless and nondestructive nature of these optical techniques is particularly important for the study of heterointerfaces which are inherently inaccessible to direct electrical or physical contact.

Generalized multi-dimensional sampling theory and applications in optical systems.

Summary of the generalized sampling theory developed by Peterson (1963) and others, which treated multidimensional impulse-modulation periodic sampling, applicable to any multidimensional process. Particular attention is given to the two-dimensional case (N = 2) for which applications in optical systems are proposed. The efficiency of sampling geometries, and digital holography and sampling theory are considered.

Scientific Applications of Optical Instruments to Materials Research

Microgravity is a unique environment for materials and biotechnology processing. Microgravity minimizes or eliminates some of the effects that occur in one g. This can lead to the production of new materials or crystal structures. It is important to understand the processes that create these new materials. Thus, experiments are designed so that optical data collection can take place during the formation of the material. This presentation will discuss scientific application of optical instruments at MSFC. These instruments include a near-field scanning optical microscope, a miniaturized holographic system, and a phase-shifting interferometer.

Application of optical correlation techniques to particle imaging

Pulsed laser sheet velocimetry yields noninstrusive measurements of velocity vectors across an extended 2-dimensional region of the flow field. The application of optical correlation techniques to the analysis of multiple exposure laser light sheet photographs can reduce and/or simplify the data reduction time and hardware. Here, Matched Spatial Filters (MSF) are used in a pattern recognition system. Usuallay MSFs are used to identify the assembly line parts. In this application, the MSFs are used to identify the iso-velocity vector contours in the flow. The patterns to be recognized are the recorded particle images in a pulsed laser light sheet photograph. Measurement of the direction of the particle image displacements between exposures yields the velocity vector. The particle image exposure sequence is designed such that the velocity vector direction is determined unambiguously. A global analysis technique is used in comparison to the more common particle tracking algorithms and Young's fringe analysis technique.

Application of optical distributed sensing and computation to control of a large flexible spacecraft

Advances in real-time holography make possible the development of new distributed optical sensors and processors that may have application to the control of flexible structures. This paper presents the analytic evaluation of control system concepts utilizing this new technology on realistic spacecraft. The design of a distributed estimator based on this new optical sensing technique is targeted to vibration control of a complex spacecraft with multiple optical sensors, each of which views a portion of the spacecraft. A simulation of a complex truss structure that was flown in the Solar Array Flight Experiment is utilized to evaluate the performance of the estimator. It is shown that good performance can be obtained from a distributed estimator even in the presence of significant sensor noise.

Application of optical distributed sensing and computation to control of large space structures

A real time holographic sensing technique is introduced and its advantages are investigated from the filtering and control point of view. A feature of holographic sensing is its capability to make distributed measurements of the position and velocity of moving objects, such as a vibrating flexible space structure. This work is based upon the distributed parameter models of linear time invariant systems, particularly including the linear oscillator equations describing the vibration of large flexible space structures. The general conclusion is that application of optical distributed sensors bring gains in the situation where Kalman filtering is necessary for state estimation. In this case, both steady state and transient filtering error covariance become smaller. This in turn results in smaller cost in the LQG problem.

Theory and applications of optical fiber lever sensors

The evolution of optical fiber lever concepts is illustrated leading to several designs found useful in air and water applications. In particular, this technology has led to the development of underwater detectors of the pressure and pressure gradient kind. In addition, an optical microphone with features not found in condenser microphones has been utilized in the measurement of pressure fluctuations in high speed boundary layers requiring sensors of small size, extended bandwidth, wide dynamic range, and high temperature capability. Finally, similar concepts have been applied to the design of scale model acoustic arrays intended for acoustic imaging applications in the megahertz frequency range.
