Mission-driven design methodology for optical systems

Disclosed are devices, systems and methods for a mission-driven design framework for optical systems. An exemplary method for improving the design of an optical system includes receive a first plurality of parameters indicative of performance requirements of the optical system, receive a second plurality of parameters representative of characteristics of one or more components in the optical system, generate a mathematical representation that combines the first plurality of parameters and the second plurality of parameters, perform a sensitivity analysis to obtain a ranking of parameters from the first plurality of parameters and the second plurality of parameters, select, based on the ranking of the parameters, at least one parameter that produces a largest change in the mathematical representation, and produce a constraint file comprising the at least one parameter for ingestion by a design tool to enable the design of the optical system.

Holographic optical system for aberration corrections in laser Doppler velocimetry

An optical system containing multifaceted holographic optical elements (HOEs) has been developed to correct for aberrations introduced by nonflat windows in laser Doppler velocimetry. The multifacet aberration correction approach makes it possible to record on one plate many sets of adjacent HOEs that address different measurement volume locations. By using 5-mm-diameter facets, it is practical to place 10-20 sets of holograms on one 10 x 12.5-cm plate, so that the procedure of moving the entire optical system to examine different locations may not be necessary. The holograms are recorded in dichromated gelatin and therefore are nonabsorptive and suitable for use with high-power argon laser beams. Low f-number optics coupled with a 90-percent efficient distortion-correcting hologram in the collection side of the system yield high optical efficiency.

The Roman Space Telescope Optical System: Status, Test, and Verification

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (“Roman”) was prioritized by the 2010 Decadal Survey in Astronomy & Astrophysics and is NASA’s next flagship observatory. Launching no earlier than 2026, Roman will explore the nature of dark energy, as well as expand the census of exoplanets in our galaxy via microlensing. Roman will also demonstrate key technology needed to image and spectrally characterize extra-solar planets. Roman’s large field of view, agile survey capabilities, and excellent stability enable these scientific objectives, yet present unique challenges for the design, test, and verification of its optical system. The Roman optical system comprises an optical telescope assembly (OTA) and two instruments: the primary science wide-field instrument (WFI) and a technology demonstration coronagraph instrument (CGI), and the instrument carrier (IC), which meters the OTA to each instrument. This paper presents a status of the optical system hardware as it begins integration and test (I&T), as well as describes key optical test, alignment, and verification activities as part of the I&T program.

HiPEP Ion Optics System Evaluation Using Gridlets

Experimental measurements are presented for sub-scale ion optics systems comprised of 7 and 19 aperture pairs with geometrical features that are similar to the HiPEP ion optics system. Effects of hole diameter and grid-to-grid spacing are presented as functions of applied voltage and beamlet current. Recommendations are made for the beamlet current range where the ion optics system can be safely operated without experiencing direct impingement of high energy ions on the accelerator grid surface. Measurements are also presented of the accelerator grid voltage where beam plasma electrons backstream through the ion optics system. Results of numerical simulations obtained with the ffx code are compared to both the impingement limit and backstreaming measurements. An emphasis is placed on identifying differences between measurements and simulation predictions to highlight areas where more research is needed. Relatively large effects are observed in simulations when the discharge chamber plasma properties and ion optics geometry are varied. Parameters investigated using simulations include the applied voltages, grid spacing, hole-to-hole spacing, doubles-to-singles ratio, plasma potential, and electron temperature; and estimates are provided for the sensitivity of impingement limits on these parameters.

Diffraction-limited performance of grazing incidence optical systems

Diffraction effects of X-ray optical systems are often (justifiably) ignored due to the small wavelength of the X-ray radiation. However, the extremely large obscuration ratio inherent to grazing incidence optical systems produces a profound degradation of the diffraction image over that produced by a moderately obscured aperture of the same diameter. The contradictory requirements of large collecting area and relatively short length of optical elements has tended to result in proposed designs containing many concentric shells with increasingly higher obscuration ratios. In this paper it is shown that diffraction effects in such systems can significantly affect the achievable optical performance at the low energy (long wavelength) end of the intended operating spectral range. Parametric diffraction-limited performance predictions for both imaging and spectrographic applications will be presented and compared to AXAF performance goals and/or BBXRT fabrication techniques.

Performance of a 12-GHz fiber-optic system for beam-waveguide antenna stability testing

A 12-GHz fiber-optic system is a critical part of a test configuration that was proposed for measuring the fractional frequency stability of the Deep Space Station (DSS)-13 beam-waveguide (BWG) antenna. This fiber-optic system is used to carry Ku-band (12-GHz) signals from a reference antenna to the DSS-13 BWG pedestal room. Tests performed only on the fiber-optic system portion of the overall test configuration showed that the 12-GHz fiber-optic system (installed at DSS-13) has a frequency stability of about 1.1 x 10(exp -16) for sampling time tau = 1000 sec for a nighttime run. This preliminary result establishes the lowest noise floor that can probably be achieved for the test configuration that will be used to measure the frequency stability of the DSS-13 BWG antenna.

Adaptive structures for precision segmented optical systems

An adaptive structures approach for a large segmented optical system with a 20-meter primary reflector made of lightweight hexagonal composite panels is considered. This approach makes it possible to vary the static and dynamic characteristics of a structural system through actuators and sensors integrated within the structure. Topics discussed include quasi-static shape adjustment and active damping augmentation of the primary backup truss structure, deformable panels for long spatial wavelength quasi-static figure correction, and an on-orbit identification system for large segmented optical systems.

High level of integration of front-end imaging optics system for electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostics on the DIII-D tokamak

The optics system of the Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) diagnostics on the DIII-D tokamak has been developed and installed for high-resolution temperature fluctuations measurement in the previous decade. The System-on-Chip approach upgrade was finished in June 2019 with high integrated receiver array with 20 individual modules. In this paper, we design new optics with high-level integration. In the new optics system, there will be two mirrors from plasma to receiver array, including one replaceable curved mirror out of the vacuum and one fixed curved mirror in the vessel. There are two options with 1:1 and 1:2 magnifications for high poloidal resolution and larger poloidal window modes. Overall, the new optics system has multiple improvements, including lighter weight, smaller size, more flexible installation and alignment. The synthetic ECEI module is used to evaluate the new optics system.

Simple in-line method to measure the dispersion of an optical system

We describe a simple in-line method to measure the dispersion of an optical system. The light beam passing through the optical system interferes with a reference beam in a spectrometer, and the resulting spectrum yields the quadratic and cubic dispersion terms of the system. We demonstrate this technique on an optical system made of grating pairs.

Polarization aberrations in optical systems

This paper examines the polarization aberrations in optical systems of isotropic radially symmetric weak polarizers in the paraxial approximation. Optical systems which fit this description are composed of uncoated and coated lenses and mirrors. Polarization aberrations are variations in phase, amplitude, and polarization state of the electromagnetic field across the exit pupil. Some are dependent on the incident polarization state and some are not. Expressions through fourth order for phase, amplitude, linear polarization, and linear retardance aberrations are derived in terms of the chief and marginal ray angles of incidence and Taylor series expansion coefficients of the Fresnel equations for reflection and transmission at interfaces.
