Organo‐Functionalized Lacunary Double Cubane‐Type Oxometallates: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of [(M II Cl) 2 (V IV O) 2 {((HOCH 2 CH 2 )(H)N(CH 2 CH 2 O))(HN(CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 )} 2 ] (M=Co, Zn)

Abstract Organofunctionalized tetranuclear clusters [(M II Cl) 2 (V IV O) 2 {((HOCH 2 CH 2 )(H)N(CH 2 CH 2 O))(HN(CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 )} 2 ] (1, M=Co,2: M=Zn) containing an unprecedented oxometallacyclic {M 2 V 2 Cl 2 N 4 O 8 } (M=Co, Zn) framework have been prepared by solvothermal reactions. The new oxo‐alkoxide compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, magnetic susceptibility measurement, DFT and ab initio computational methods, and complete single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction structure analysis. The isostructural clusters are formed of edge‐sharing octahedral {VO 5 N} and trigonal bipyramidal {MO 3 NCl} units. Diethanolamine ligates the bimetallic lacunary double cubane core of1and2in an unusual two‐mode fashion, unobserved previously. In the crystalline state, the clusters of1and2are joined by hydrogen bonds to form a three‐dimensional network structure. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate weakly antiferromagnetic interactions between the vanadium centers [J iso (V IV −V IV )=−5.4(1); −3.9(2) cm −1 ], and inequivalent antiferromagnetic interactions between the cobalt and vanadium centers [J iso (V IV −Co II )=−12.6 and −7.5 cm −1 ] contained in1.

Using molecular dynamics to predict the solidus and liquidus of mixed oxides ( Th , U ) O 2 , ( Th , Pu ) O 2 and ( Pu , U ) O 2

Molecular dynamics (MD) was used to establish a mechanistic basis for the experimentally observed reduction in liquidus and solidus temperatures below the melting point of the end-members for the mixed oxides (Th,U)O 2 , (Th, Pu) O 2 and (Pu, U) O 2 . This dip is found at additions of the oxide with higher melting point to the oxide with the lower melting point. There are many causes suggested for the dip; here the distribution of the cation Frenkel energy for the mixed oxides caused by the local environment is proposed as a contributor. Furthermore, a variant of the moving interface method which yields information on the position of the solidus and liquidus boundaries, is used to predict the phase diagrams of these systems.

Formation of 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 during Thermochemical Reduction of 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 : Identification of a Polytype in the Ba(Ce,Mn)O 3 Family

The resurgence of interest in a hydrogen economy and the development of hydrogen-related technologies has initiated numerous research and development efforts aimed at making the generation, storage, and transportation of hydrogen more efficient and affordable. Solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH) is a process that potentially exhibits numerous benefits such as high reaction efficiencies, tunable thermodynamics, and continued performance over extended cycling. Although CeO 2 has been the de facto standard STCH material for many years, more recently 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 (BCM) has demonstrated enhanced hydrogen production at intermediate H 2 /H 2 O conditions compared to CeO 2 , making it a contender for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the thermo-reduction stability of 12R-BCM dictates the oxygen partial pressure (pO 2 ) and temperature conditions optimal for cycling. In this study, we identify the formation of a 6H-BCM polytype at high temperature and reducing conditions, experimentally and computationally, as a mechanism and pathway for 12R-BCM decomposition. 12R-BCM was synthesized with high purity and then controllably reduced using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) data is used to identify the formation of a 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 (6H-BCM) polytype that is formed at 1350 degrees C under strongly reducing pO 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) total energy and defect calculations show a window of thermodynamic stability for the 6H-polytype consistent with the XRD results. These data provide the first evidence of the 6H-BCM polytype and could provide a mechanistic explanation for the superior water-splitting behaviors of 12R-BCM.

Structure and good piezoelectric performance in the complex system of Pb[(Zn,Ni)Nb]O 3 –Pb[(In,Yb)Nb]O 3 –Pb(Zr,Hf,Ti)O 3

High-performance piezoelectrics are always demanded for the high-end application. In this study, a complex piezoelectric system of 0.49Pb(Zn 1/2 Ni 1/2 ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 – x Pb(In 1/2 Yb 1/2 ) 1/2 Nb 1/2 O 3 –(0.51 – x )Pb(Zr 1/2 Hf 1/2 ) 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.23) was fabricated through the solid-state method. The structure, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties were investigated. The optimum piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 761 pC/N, high Curie temperature of 169 °C, dielectric permittivity ( ε r ) of 4557, and electromechanical coupling coefficient ( k p ) of 63% were found at the morphotropic phase boundary composition of x = 0.19, which are superior to other complex piezoelectric materials. In particular, a significant large-signal d 33 * of 913 pm/V and low strain hysteresis (6%) was obtained in the temperature range of 20–170 °C. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) has demonstrated that good temperature stability is put down to the structure stability. The agreement between the calculated lattice strain from in situ high-energy synchrotron XRD data and the macroscopic measurements suggests that the large lattice strain has a dominant contribution to the high piezoelectric response. The high piezoelectric performance and good temperature stability makes it potential for application.

Magnetic correlations and pairing tendencies of the hybrid stacking nickelate superlattice La 7 Ni 5 O 17 (La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 /La 4 Ni 3 ⁢O 10 ) under pressure

Motivated by the recent rapid progress in high-𝑇 𝑐 nickelate superconductors, we comprehensively study the physical properties of the alternating bilayer trilayer stacking nickelate La 7 ⁢Ni 5 ⁢O 17 . The high-symmetry phase of this material, without the tilting of oxygen octahedra, is not stable at ambient conditions but becomes stable under high pressure, where a small hole pocket 𝛾 0 , composed of the 𝑑 3⁢𝑧 2 −𝑟 2 states in the trilayer sublattice, appears. Here, this pocket was identified in our previous work for trilayer La 4 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 10 as important to develop superconductivity. Moreover, using random-phase approximation calculations, we find a leading 𝑠 ± pairing state for the high-symmetry phase under pressure with similar pairing strength as that obtained previously for the bilayer La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 compound, suggesting a similar or higher superconducting transition temperature 𝑇 𝑐 , at the random-phase approximation level. In addition, we find that the dominant magnetic fluctuations in the system driving this pairing state have antiferromagnetic structure both in-plane and between the planes of the top and bottom trilayer and bilayer sublattices, while the middle trilayer is magnetically decoupled.

New Solids in As-O-Mo, As(P)-O-Mo(W) and As(P)-O-Nb(W) Systems That Exhibit Nonlinear Optical Properties

Interactions between well-mixed fine powders of As 2 O 3 , P 2 O 5 , MoO 3 , WO 3 and Nb 2 O 5 at different stoichiometry in quartz ampoules under vacuum at ~1000 °C in the presence of metallic molybdenum (or niobium), over several weeks, led to shiny dichroic crystalline materials being formed in cooler parts of the reaction vessel. An addition of small quantities of metals-Mo or Nb-was made with the aim of partially reducing their highly oxidized Mo(VI), W(VI) or Nb(V) species to corresponding Mo(V), W(V) and Nb(IV) centers, in order to form mixed valence solids. Sublimed crystals of four new compounds were investigated using a variety of techniques, with prime emphasis on the X-ray analysis, followed by spectroscopy (diffusion reflectance, IR, Raman and EPR), second harmonic generation (SHG), thermal analysis under N 2 and air atmosphere, and single crystals electrical conductivity studies. The results evidenced the formation of new complex solids of previously unknown compositions and structures. Three out of four compounds crystallized in non-centrosymmetric space groups and represent layered 2D polymeric puckered structures that being stacked on each other form 3D lattices. All new solids exhibit strong second-harmonic-generation (SHG effect; based on YAG 1064 nm tests with detection of 532 nm photons), and a rare photosalient effect when crystals physically move in the laser beam. Single crystals’ electrical conductivity of the four new synthesized compounds was measured, and the results showed their semiconductor behavior. Values of band gaps of these new solids were determined using diffusion reflectance spectroscopy in the visible region. Aspects of new solids’ practical usefulness are discussed.

Collision integrals and high temperature transport properties for N-N, O-O, and N-O

Accurate collision integrals for the interactions of N(4S0) + N(4S0), O(3P) + O(3P), and N(4S0) + O(3P) are reported. These are computed from a semiclassical formulation of the scattering using the best available representations of all of the potential energy curves needed to describe the collisions. Spectroscopic curves and other accurate measured data are used where available; the results of accurate ab initio electronic structure calculations are used to determine the remaining potential curves. The high-lying states are found to give the largest contributions to the collision cross sections. The nine collision integrals needed to determine transport properties to second order are tabulated for translational temperatures in the range 250-100,000 K. The viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient, and thermal diffusion factor for a gas composed of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in thermal equilibrium have been calculated. It is found that the second-order contribution to the transport properties is small. Graphs of these transport properties for various mixture ratios are presented for temperatures in the range 5000-15,000 K.

Electron Excitation Cross Sections for the S II Transitions: 3s(exp 2)3p(exp 3) 4S(exp o) approaches 3s(exp 2)3p(exp 3) 2D(exp o), 2P(exp o), and 3s3p(exp 4) 4P

Experimental and theoretical collisional excitation cross sections are reported for the transitions 3s(exp 2)3p(exp 3)4S(exp o) approaches 3s(exp 2)3p(exp 3) 2D(exp o), 2P(exp o), and 3s3P(exp 4) 4P in S II. The transition wavelengths (energies) are 6716 A (1.85 eV), 4069 A (3.05 eV), and 1256 A (9.87 eV), respectively. In the experiments, use is made of the energy-loss merged-beams method. The metastable fraction of the S II beam was assessed and minimized. The contribution of elastically scattered electrons was reduced by the use of a lowered solenoidal magnetic field and a modulated radio-frequency voltage on the analyzing plates and by retarding grids to reject the elastically scattered electrons with larger Larmor radii. For each transition, comparisons are made among experiments, the new 19 state R-matrix calculation, and three other close-coupling calculations.

Interactions Between Oxygen and Nitrogen: O[Single Bond]N, O[Single Bond]N (sub 2), and O (sub 2)[Single Bond]N (sub 2)

Potential energy curves for 0-N interactions corresponding to the X (sup 2) II (sub t/2), X (sup 2) II (sub 3/2), A (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), B (sup 2) II, C (sup 2) II, D (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), E (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), and B prime (sup 2 delta) states of nitric oxide have been calculated from spectroscopic data by the Rydberg- Klein-Rees method. Curves for the (sup 4) II, (sup 2) Eta, (sup 4) Eta, (sup 6) Eta, and (sup 6) II states have been obtained from limited spectroscopic results and from relations derived from approximate quantum-mechanical calculations. Two semi-independent calculations have been made, and are in good agreement with each other. The quantum-mechanical relations also lead to approximate curves for the O[Single Bond]N, and O[Single Bond]N (sub 2) interactions over a limited range. The O (sub 2)[Single Bond]N (sub 2) interaction is consistent with one valid at larger separation distances which has been derived from high-temperature gas viscosity data.

Ab initio quantum scattering calculations for the CO–O 2 system and a new CO–O 2 potential energy surface: O 2 and air broadening of the R(0) line in CO

We present ab initio calculations of the collisional broadening of the R(0) pure rotational line in CO (at 115 GHz) perturbed by O 2 . Our calculations are done in a fully quantum way by solving close-coupling quantum-scattering equations without any approximations. We also report a new, highly accurate CO–O 2 potential energy surface on which we did the quantum-scattering calculations. The calculated collisional broadening agrees with the available experimental data in a wide temperature range. The calculated collisional shift is negligible compared to the broadening, which is also consistent with the experimental data. We combine this result with our previous calculations for the same line in CO perturbed by N 2 [Józwiak et al., J. Chem. Phys. 154, 054314 (2021)]; the obtained air-perturbed broadening of the R(0) pure rotational line in CO and its temperature dependence perfectly agree with the HITRAN database. This result constitutes an important step toward developing a methodology for providing accurate ab initio reference data on spectroscopic collisional line-shape parameters for molecular systems relevant to the Earth’s atmosphere and for populating spectroscopic line-by-line databases.

Collision integrals and high temperature transport properties for N-N, O-O, and N-O

Accurate collision integrals are reported for the interactions of N(4 S 0) + N(4 S 0), O(3 P), and N(4 S 0) + O(3 P). These are computed from a semiclassical formulation of the scattering using the best available representations of all of the potential energy curves needed to describe the collisions. Experimental RKR curves and other accurate measured data are used where available; the results of accurate ab initio electronic structure calculations are used to determine the remaining potential curves. The high-lying states are found to give the largest contributions to the collision cross sections. The nine collision integrals, needed to determine transport properties to second order, are tabulated for translational temperatures in the range 250 K to 100,000 K. These results are intended to reduce the uncertainty in future predictions of the transport properties of nonequilibrium air, particularly at high temperatures. The viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient, and thermal diffusion factor for a gas composed of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in thermal equilibrium are calculated. It was found that the second order contribution to the transport properties is small. Graphs of these transport properties for various mixture ratios are presented for temperatures in the range 5000 to 15000 K.

Probing electronic and dielectric properties of ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 atomic layer stacks made with in vacuo atomic layer deposition

Ultrathin (1–4 nm) films of wide-bandgap semiconductors are important to many applications in microelectronics, and the film properties can be sensitively affected by defects especially at the substrate/film interface. Motivated by this, an in vacuo atomic layer deposition (ALD) was developed for the synthesis of ultrathin films of Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 atomic layer stacks (ALSs) on Al electrodes. It is found that the Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS can form an interface with the Al electrode with negligible interfacial defects under the optimal ALD condition whether the starting atomic layer is Ga 2 O 3 or Al 2 O 3 . Such an interface is the key to achieving an optimal and tunable electronic structure and dielectric properties in Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS ultrathin films. In situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy confirms that the electronic structure of Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS can have tunable bandgaps (E g ) between ~2.0 eV for 100% Ga 2 O 3 and ~3.4 eV for 100% Al 2 O 3 . With variable ratios of Ga:Al, the measured E g exhibits significant non-linearity, agreeing with the density functional theory simulation, and tunable carrier concentration. Furthermore, the dielectric constant of ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS capacitors is tunable through the variation in the ratio of the constituent Ga 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 atomic layer numbers from 9.83 for 100% Ga 2 O 3 to 8.28 for 100% Al 2 O 3 . The high ε leads to excellent effective oxide thickness ~1.7–2.1 nm for the ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS, which is comparable to that of high-K dielectric materials.

Prediction of crystal structures and motifs in the Fe–Mg–O system at Earth’s core pressures

Abstract Fe, Mg, and O are among the most abundant elements in terrestrial planets. While the behavior of the Fe–O, Mg–O, and Fe–Mg binary systems under pressure have been investigated, there are still very few studies of the Fe–Mg–O ternary system at relevant Earth’s core and super-Earth’s mantle pressures. Here, we use the adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) to study ternary Fe x Mg y O z phases in a wide range of stoichiometries at 200 GPa and 350 GPa. We discovered three dynamically stable phases with stoichiometries FeMg 2 O 4 , Fe 2 MgO 4, and FeMg 3 O 4 with lower enthalpy than any known combination of Fe–Mg–O high-pressure compounds at 350 GPa. With the discovery of these phases, we construct the Fe–Mg–O ternary convex hull. We further clarify the composition- and pressure-dependence of structural motifs with the analysis of the AGA-found stable and metastable structures. Analysis of binary and ternary stable phases suggest that O, Mg, or both could stabilize a BCC iron alloy at inner core pressures.

Alkali Vapor Corrosion of Spinel (MgAl 2 O 4 ) and Gahnite (ZnAl 2 O 4 ) Refractories—A Comparative Study

Alkali vapor corrosion is critical for refractories used in the kilns and furnaces of diverse high-temperature processing and manufacturing sectors such as gasifiers, cement production, and glass making. Gahnite (ZnAl 2 O 4 ) is being investigated as a potential chrome-free refractory because of its similarity with the structure and properties of magnesium aluminate (MgAl 2 O 4 ) spinel. The alkali vapor corrosion of ZnAl 2 O 4 , MgAl 2 O 4 , and Mg 0.5 Zn 0.5 Al 2 O 4 was studied, according to ASTM C987-10, at 1371°C for 24 h using sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ). The surface and the polished cross-sections of the corroded ZnAl 2 O 4 , MgAl 2 O 4 , and Mg 0.5 Zn 0.5 Al 2 O 4 specimens were analyzed using x-ray diffraction (XRD), microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. MgO in MgAl 2 O 4 , ZnO in ZnAl 2 O 4 , Mg 0.77 Zn 0.23 O, and NaAlO 2 were detected as the corrosion products for these specimens. The extent of corrosion substantially varied among the specimens despite the similarity in the corrosion products. The corrosion resistance increased in the following order: Mg 0.5 Zn 0.5 Al 2 O 4 > MgAl 2 O 4 > ZnAl 2 O 4 . The formation of a dense MgO and Mg 0.77 Zn 0.23 O layer for MgAl 2 O 4 and Mg 0.5 Zn 0.5 Al 2 O 4 , respectively, contributed to their superior resistance to alkali vapor corrosion. The underlying corrosion mechanisms are discussed based on experimental observations supported by thermodynamic analysis. Additionally, the results suggest that a partial Zn 2+ substitution for Mg 2+ in MgAl 2 O 4 can enhance the resistance to alkali vapor corrosion.

Thermal Conductivity of β-Phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1– x ) 2 O 3 Heteroepitaxial Thin Films

Heteroepitaxy of β-phase gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) thin films on foreign substrates shows promise for the development of next-generation deep ultraviolet solar blind photodetectors and power electronic devices. In this work, the influences of the film thickness and crystallinity on the thermal conductivity of ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-Ga 2 O 3 heteroepitaxial thin films were investigated. Unintentionally doped β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were grown on c-plane sapphire substrates with off-axis angles of 0° and 6° toward $\langle$$11\bar{2}0$$\rangle$ via metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The surface morphology and crystal quality of the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The thermal conductivities of the β-Ga 2 O 3 films were measured via time-domain thermoreflectance. The interface quality was studied using scanning transmission electron microscopy. The measured thermal conductivities of the submicron-thick β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were relatively low as compared to the intrinsic bulk value. The measured thin film thermal conductivities were compared with the Debye–Callaway model incorporating phononic parameters derived from first-principles calculations. The comparison suggests that the reduction in the thin film thermal conductivity can be partially attributed to the enhanced phonon-boundary scattering when the film thickness decreases. They were found to be a strong function of not only the layer thickness but also the film quality, resulting from growth on substrates with different offcut angles. Growth of β-Ga 2 O 3 films on 6° offcut sapphire substrates was found to result in higher crystallinity and thermal conductivity than films grown on on-axis c-plane sapphire. However, the β-Ga 2 O 3 films grown on 6° offcut sapphire exhibit a lower thermal boundary conductance at the β-Ga 2 O 3 /sapphire heterointerface. In addition, the thermal conductivity of MOVPE-grown ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films with Al compositions ranging from 2% to 43% was characterized. Because of phonon-alloy disorder scattering, the β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 films exhibit lower thermal conductivities (2.8–4.7 W/m∙K) than the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films. The dominance of the alloy disorder scattering in β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 is further evidenced by the weak temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity. This work provides fundamental insight into the physical interactions that govern phonon transport within heteroepitaxially grown β-phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films and lays the groundwork for the thermal modeling and design of β-Ga 2 O 3 electronic and optoelectronic devices.

How do drought and heat affect the response of soybean seed yield to elevated O 3 ? An analysis of 15 seasons of free–air O 3 concentration enrichment studies

The coincidence of rising ozone concentrations ([O 3 ]), increasing global temperatures, and drought episodes is expected to become more intense and frequent in the future. A better understanding of the responses of crop yield to elevated [O 3 ] under different levels of drought and high temperature stress is, therefore, critical for projecting future food production potential. Using a 15-year open-air field experiment in central Illinois, we assessed the impacts of elevated [O 3 ] coupled with variation in growing season temperature and water availability on soybean seed yield. Thirteen soybean cultivars were exposed to a wide range of season-long elevated [O 3 ] in the field using free-air O 3 concentration enrichment. Elevated [O3] treatments reduced soybean seed yield from as little as 5.3% in 2005 to 35.2% in 2010. Although cultivars differed in yield response to elevated [O 3 ] (R), ranging from 17.5% to –76.4%, there was a significant negative correlation between R and O 3 dosage. Soybean cultivars showed greater seed yield losses to elevated [O 3 ] when grown at drier or hotter conditions compared to wetter or cooler years, because the hotter and drier conditions were associated with greater O 3 treatment. However, year-to-year variation in weather conditions did not influence the sensitivity of soybean seed yield to a given increase in [O 3 ]. Collectively, this study quantitatively demonstrates that, although drought conditions or warmer temperatures led to greater O 3 treatment concentrations and O 3 -induced seed yield reduction, drought and temperature stress did not alter soybean's sensitivity to O 3 . Our results have important implications for modeling the effects of rising O 3 pollution on crops and suggest that altering irrigation practices to mitigate O 3 stress may not be effective in reducing crop sensitivity to O 3 .

Promoting the cleavage of C-O bonds at the interface between a metal oxide cluster and a Co(0001) support

As a first step toward the rational design of Co-based catalysts with a higher activity and selectivity, we determine how one can activate a C-O bond at the interface between a metal oxide cluster and a Co(0001) support. The hypothesis here is that the metal ions in metal oxide clusters on a Co(0001) support enhance the adsorption of CO and weaken the C-O bond strength, which can then facilitate the dissociation of the CO reactant. To test this hypothesis, we developed three computational models of Ti4O8/Co(0001), Zr4O8/Co(0001), and Mn8O8/Co(0001). We quantify the CO adsorption behavior at the interface sites between an oxide cluster and the Co(0001) support as well as the corresponding IR spectra. We correlate the computed CO stretch frequencies with their CO adsorption energies, as well as the CO stretch frequency with the C-O bond length, and related these findings to the changes in the chemical bonding in the bound CO. The interface is the most favorable site for CO adsorption. Adsorption results in an increase of the C-O bond length and a decrease in its vibrational frequency. From a chemical bonding analysis, the bond order in CO at this site drops from 3 (in the gas phase) to 1. This decrease in bond order is a necessary precursor stage for CO dissociation. The experimental measurements of the corresponding FTIR spectra support this point. The favorability of CO adsorption at the interface sites is due to an electron transfer from the metal ion in the metal oxide cluster to the O atom in CO. We establish a linear relationship between C-O bond length and CO frequency and this relationship is found to be independent of the support, type of metal oxide cluster, or the adsorption site.

Radiation effects on the structure and alteration behavior of an SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 –B 2 O 3 –Na 2 O glass

As borosilicate glasses are used in many countries to immobilize fission products and minor actinides after spent fuel reprocessing before storage in a deep geological repository, assessing that their chemical durability is of paramount importance. Here, pristine and preirradiated (952 MeV, 136Xe) SiO 2 –B2O 3 –Al2O 3 –Na 2 O glasses with the same molar ratios as in the French SON68 and ISG glasses have been subjected to aqueous corrosion in deionized water and in silica-saturated solution to measure the initial and longer term alteration rates. Pristine and preirradiated glasses corrode following the same mechanisms, but the preirradiation has a strong impact on the initial dissolution rate (increase by a factor of 5.6), and on the alteration layer depth in silica-saturated conditions (by two- to threefolds). The later result is related to the formation of a more porous, less passivating gel on the preirradiated glass specimen. Using both experimental spectroscopies (NMR, IR, and SFG) and classical molecular dynamics, the radiation effects on the glass structure and water diffusion have been assessed. After preirradiation, the density and the polymerization degree of the glass decrease, whereas the topological disorder increases. In consequence, water diffusion accelerates. These observations allow to correlate the radiation impact on the alteration behavior to the structural changes.
