Purification of legacy Ra-226 from ingrown Pb-210 using cation exchange chromatography

With the growing interest in using radium-226 (Ra-226) as a source material to produce essential radionuclides for targeted alpha therapies, the global demand for Ra-226 has surged, rendering its acquisition difficult. The shortage necessitates the exploration of alternative pathways to obtain this isotope beyond traditional commercial vendors. Legacy radium sources remain widespread due to Ra-226’s historical use but require the removal of ingrown daughter products to obtain a pure Ra-226 product. In conclusion, a straightforward and effective purification method for legacy Ra-226 ampoules has been developed using cation exchange chromatography, enabling the reliable conversion of legacy materials into high-purity Ra-226 solutions.

Sample screening of uranium ore concentrates using portable spectrophotometers: investigating the correlation between visible colors and chemical signatures

A research collaboration between the Japan Atomic Energy Agency and the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration examined nuclear forensic signatures and analytical methods for tracing the origins of uranium ore concentrates (UOCs). Here, this study focuses on utilizing portable spectrophotometers capable of reflectance measurements in the visible light spectrum as a potential rapid screening tool for nuclear forensics analysis. Unlike laboratory-based near-infrared spectroscopy or digital image analysis, this research investigated the potential to correlate visible color measurements with key nuclear forensics signatures using seven types of UOC samples with known origins and three UOC certified reference materials. Results demonstrated that distinct color groups, quantified using CIELAB values, correlated with major uranium compounds. Furthermore, the findings indicated that trace elements can influence the UOC colors, providing additional insights into material characteristics. Although this approach requires further validation across a broader range of UOC species, this study demonstrated that simple colorimetric analysis using visible spectrophotometry, which does not require complex sample preparation or data processing, can serve as a practical and novel rapid tool for preliminary screening and attribution in nuclear forensics investigations.

193 mIr/ 192 Ir ratio from irradiation with various NCERC critical assemblies

Eight irradiations of K 2 IrCl 6 pellets were carried out with three critical assemblies: Flattop-Oy, Flattop-Pu and Godiva IV. One of the irradiations was performed with three pellets at different locations of the critical assembly, while the other irradiations with pellets at the center, but operating the critical assembly at different power and, respectively, different neutron flux. Counting samples were prepared from the irradiated pellets and X-ray spectra measured with silicone drift detectors. The 193 mIr/ 192 Ir ratio is reported for each irradiation.

FY26 MID-YEAR REPORT 238 Pu Measurement in Bulk Environmental Samples by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS)

Funding was received in December 2026 to optimize a nascent measurement capability for mass spectrometry of 238 Pu, as it would apply to relevant environmental collections in safeguards applications, i.e. NWAL swipes or other bulk collections such as soil, sediment, waters, or air filters. The measurement relies on differing ionization temperatures for U and Pu during thermal ionization and therefore leverages TIMS to partially separate and measure these elements. Collected counts of 238 Pu can be mathematically corrected for interfering counts of background 238 U, by addition of a U tracer (e.g. 235 U) to account for the 238 U present. The method has undergone initial characterization at LANL regarding detection limit, precision, and accuracy but requires further applicability-testing for possible use in safeguards.

Unique & challenging aspects of plutonium metal standards exchange program for actinide measurements

The Los Alamos National Laboratory exchange program is the only program of its kind for the distribution of plutonium (Pu) standards materials with a range of impurity contents to multiple laboratories for destructive measurements of elemental concentration. This paper discusses statistical methods used to address challenges in Pu metal exchange data by way of two case studies. Challenges include how to evaluate a data set when a large fraction of the values are minimum detection limits (MDLs), and how to determine potential outliers with limited in-formation on the true spread of the data.

Internal-Gelation Production of Uranium Oxide Sol-Gel Particles for Forensic Applications

The purpose of this project was to develop and demonstrate a novel method for the production of uranium oxide microsphere particles with tunable chemical compositions via a sol-gel process using a 3D-printer setup. These particles can serve several purposes in research and development as a forensic training tool or as standard reference materials. A key component of the project was to demonstrate the ability to control physical and chemical parameters of the particles created. First, we demonstrated the ability to employ an internal gelation sol-gel process to create individual uranium oxide particles. The particles were successfully dispensed using a unique 3D-printing setup onto a substrate to react and then were collected and thermally processed. A series of temperatures for the annealing process was tested on individual samples to investigate the effect on the sol-gel chemical composition and physical integrity. Next, we demonstrated the ability to control matrix composition of the particles by separately incorporating fission product isotopes as well as Np-237 into the sol-gel solution. It was shown by gamma-ray spectroscopy that these matrix elements were successfully retained during the gelation process. We studied the retention of the elements across a series of annealing temperatures. Additionally, we demonstrated the ability to quantitatively control the isotopic composition of the particles by altering the U-237/U-238 ratio to a controlled value. Finally, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was used to investigate the oxidation state of the sol-gel after annealing at different temperatures.

Measurement of the 175 Hf half-life

Hafnium-175 is a useful radioisotope for numerous applications; however, its evaluated half-life (70 ± 2 days) has a large uncertainty. To enable a new measurement of the half-life, 175 Hf was produced via proton irradiation of natural lutetium and chemically purified. The 175 Hf sample was counted approximately once a month with three high-purity germanium detectors for 13 months (~5.5 half-lives). A 133 Ba standard was counted in an identical manner to quantify systematic uncertainties over the measurement period. In conclusion, the measured 175 Hf half-life is 69.90 ± 0.07 days, in agreement with the evaluated value, but with significantly reduced uncertainty.

Multimodal Instrument Concepts for Chemical Sciences at Second Target Station

The development of advanced chemical and energy systems is inherently complex, relying heavily on their unique pathways. Because no two catalysts or batteries follow exactly the same kinetic trajectories, conventional sequential measurements often obscure crucial relationships between structure and dynamics through statistical averaging. This report introduces two neutron scattering instrument concepts for the Second Target Station (STS) specifically designed to overcome this barrier: the Extended Q-range Diffractometer (EQD) and the Multimodal Chemical Spectrometer (MCS).

Field deployable trace radioisotope analysis through combined electrochemical and alpha spectroscopy methods

A method for depositing actinides directly onto a 4H-SiC Schottky barrier diode (SBD) detector as a field deployable actinides sensor was developed to enable off-site analysis, shortening the time to obtain critical information such as elements, concentration, and/or isotopic ratio related to the radiological situation. A thin film of Hg was first electrodeposited onto the Pt contact of the SiC diode, followed by chronoamperometric deposition of microgram levels of actinides under conventional control conditions. The 4H-SiC diode maintained consistent functionality through the electrodeposition process and showed resolved alpha-energy spectra that contained accurate isotopic information demonstrating the feasibility of a combined chemical and radiological sensor for field actinide detection and quantification.
