A Scalable Mixed-Integer Decomposition Method for Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow with Complementarity Constraints

This project aimed to develop a scalable algorithm for security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) under contingency scenarios. In particular, the SCOPF problem targeted in the GO Competition is challenging because of the nonconvexity, its nonsmoothness, and the problem size, which increases with the number of contingency events. Complementarity constraints imposed in post-contingency variables are particularly challenging because they lead to a violation of constraint qualifications at any feasible point.

Estimators and Fusers for Fiber Delay Estimation Using Environmental Measurements

The properties of deployed network fiber are affected by environmental factors due to their exposure to the elements. Particularly for quantum networks, the resultant delay variations may have significant impacts due to the extreme sensitivity of synchronization, coincidence counting, and other critical operations. In this paper, the delays of 15 km aerial-inground fiber connections are measured, and effects due to temperature, humidity and wind speed are analyzed over multiple periods spanning four seasons of a year. Machine learning methods are first utilized to reveal surprisingly pronounced effects of humidity on the delay, in addition to the expected temperature and its seasonal variations. Estimator and fusion methods are developed to estimate the delay using temperature, humidity and wind speed measurements, by utilizing smooth Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and nonsmooth Ensemble of Trees (EOT) methods. Measurements from winter and summer periods are temporally fused using twelve different methods, and eight methods provide estimates for the delay throughout the year with median test errors under 1.28%. The results reveal distinct temperature-humidity trends across the seasons, and the ability of estimator and temporal fusion methods to exploit them for estimating the delay. These results constitute a case study of machine learning analytical results, wherein generalization equations explain the performance of various estimator and fuser methods.

Variational and phase response analysis for limit cycles with hard boundaries, with applications to neuromechanical control problems

Motor systems show an overall robustness, but because they are highly nonlinear, understanding how they achieve robustness is difficult. In many rhythmic systems, robustness against perturbations involves response of both the shape and the timing of the trajectory. This makes the study of robustness even more challenging. To understand how a motor system produces robust behaviors in a variable environment, we consider a neuromechanical model of motor patterns in the feeding apparatus of the marine mollusk Aplysia californica (Shaw et al. in J Comput Neurosci 38(1):25–51, 2015; Lyttle et al. in Biol Cybern 111(1):25–47, 2017). We established in (Wang et al. in SIAM J Appl Dyn Syst 20(2):701–744, 2021. https://doi.org/10.1137/20M1344974) the tools for studying combined shape and timing responses of limit cycle systems under sustained perturbations and here apply them to study robustness of the neuromechanical model against increased mechanical load during swallowing. Interestingly, we discover that nonlinear biomechanical properties confer resilience by immediately increasing resistance to applied loads. In contrast, the effect of changed sensory feedback signal is significantly delayed by the firing rates’ hard boundary properties. Our analysis suggests that sensory feedback contributes to robustness in swallowing primarily by shifting the timing of neural activation involved in the power stroke of the motor cycle (retraction). This effect enables the system to generate stronger retractor muscle forces to compensate for the increased load, and hence achieve strong robustness. The approaches that we are applying to understanding a neuromechanical model in Aplysia, and the results that we have obtained, are likely to provide insights into the function of other motor systems that encounter changing mechanical loads and hard boundaries, both due to mechanical and neuronal firing properties.

An inexact semismooth Newton method with application to adaptive randomized sketching for dynamic optimization

In many applications, one can only access the inexact gradients and inexact hessian times vector products. Thus it is essential to consider algorithms that can handle such inexact quantities with a guaranteed convergence to solution. An inexact adaptive and provably convergent semismooth Newton method is considered to solve constrained optimization problems. In particular, dynamic optimization problems, which are known to be highly expensive, are the focus. A memory efficient semismooth Newton algorithm is introduced for these problems. The source of efficiency and inexactness is the randomized matrix sketching. Further, applications to optimization problems constrained by partial differential equations are also considered.
