First observation of isolated nuclear recoils following neutron capture for dark matter calibration

Low-energy nuclear recoils (NRs) are hard to measure, because they produce few e - /h + pairs in solids—i.e., they have low “ionization yield.” A silicon detector was exposed to thermal neutrons over 2.5 live days, probing NRs down to 450 eV. The observation of a neutron capture-induced component of NRs at low energies is supported by the much-improved fit upon inclusion of a capture NR model. This result shows that thermal neutron calibration of very low recoil energy NRs is promising for dark matter searches, coherent neutrino experiments, and improving understanding of ionization dynamics in solids.

Reduction of the neutron imaginary potential off the stability line and its possible impact on neutron capture rates

The effect of the isovector imaginary optical potential has been studied experimentally by using the particle-evaporation technique for the 11 B + 48 Ca reaction with a 21.8 MeV 11 B beam. Spectra of neutron, proton, and α particles emitted from the neutron-rich compound nucleus 59 Mn have been measured and analyzed with traditional optical model potentials with their original parametrizations as well as with adjusted isovector imaginary components. It is shown that the isovector component of the imaginary potential is indispensable in the reproduction of proton and α-particle yields from this reaction and even needs to be enhanced compared with the suggestions of the original model parametrizations. Furthermore, this can lead to important consequences for astrophysical reaction-rate calculations.

First Precision Measurement of the Parity Violating Asymmetry in Cold Neutron Capture on 3 He

We report the first precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the direction of proton momentum with respect to the neutron spin, in the reaction 3 He(n,p) 3 H, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized active 3 He target. The asymmetry is a result of the weak interaction between nucleons, which remains one of the least well-understood aspects of electroweak theory. The measurement provides an important benchmark for modern effective field theory and potential model calculations. Measurements like this are necessary to determine the spin-isospin structure of the hadronic weak interaction. Our asymmetry result is A PV =[1.55±0.97(stat)±0.24(sys)]×10 -8 , which has the smallest uncertainty of any hadronic parity-violating asymmetry measurement so far.

Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements of 54 Fe at the RPI LINAC

54 Fe radiative capture cross section and transmission measurements were conducted at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Gaerttner Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Center using an enriched 54 Fe sample in the keV energy region. 54 Fe is a constituent of natural iron, which is present in a large variety of nuclear grade materials. Therefore, it is important to have an accurate understanding of the cross sections of 54 Fe, which can be measured experimentally. In the time-of-flight measurements conducted at the LINAC, an array of four C 6 D 6 detectors surrounded the sample and radiative capture data were collected using a digital data acquisition system. Additionally, a Li-glass detector was used to collect transmission data using an analog data acquisition system. The radiative capture yield of the 54 Fe measurements were normalized to saturated resonances observed in Au and Ta to obtain an absolute capture yield. The preliminary capture yield and preliminary transmission obtained can be compared to evaluations and existing experimental data. Some disagreements were observed in prominent d-wave capture resonances observed in 54 Fe in the low-keV neutron energy region. Both sets of experimental data along with pre-existing datasets will greatly enhance RPI’s ability to perform resonance evaluation for 54 Fe up to roughly 1 MeV.

Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements of 54 Fe at the RPI LINAC [Slides]

Transmission and capture measurements provide a wholistic set of experimental data to start resonance evaluation on 54 Fe. Analysis thus far supports that changes are needed in 54 Fe evaluation. Major accomplishments include the completion of radiative capture measurements of 54 Fe and the completion of total cross section measurements of 54 Fe. Future work includes the completion of data analysis relevant to capture and transmission measurements (May 2022), complete fitting of new resonance parameters to 54 Fe data (early 2023), and completion of all required deliverables for graduation (May 2023).

Enrichment of the Galactic disc with neutron-capture elements: Gd, Dy, and Th

The study of the origin of heavy elements is one of the main goals of nuclear astrophysics. In this paper, we present new observational data for the heavy r-process elements gadolinium (Gd, Z= 64), dysprosium (Dy, Z= 66), and thorium (Th, Z= 90) in a sample of 276 Galactic disc stars (–1.0 < [Fe/H] < + 0.3). The stellar spectra have a high resolution of 42 000 and 75 000, and the signal-to-noise ratio higher than 100. The LTE abundances of Gd, Dy, and Th have been determined by comparing the observed and synthetic spectra for three Gd lines (149 stars), four Dy lines (152 stars), and the Th line at 4019.13 Å (170 stars). For about 70 percent of the stars in our sample, Gd and Dy are measured for the first time, and Th for 95 percent of the stars. Typical errors vary from 0.07 to 0.16 dex. This paper provides the first extended set of Th observations in the Milky Way disc. Here together with europium (Eu, Z= 63) data from our previous studies, we have compared these new observations with nucleosynthesis predictions and Galactic Chemical Evolution simulations. We confirm that [Gd/Fe] and [Dy/Fe] show the same behaviour of Eu. We study with GCE simulations the evolution of [Th/Fe] in comparison with [Eu/Fe], showing that unlike Eu, either the Th production is metallicity dependent in case of a unique source of the r-process in the Galaxy, or the frequency of the Th-rich r-process source is decreasing with the increase in [Fe/H].
