Fundamental principles of absolute radiometry and the philosophy of this NBS program (1968 to 1971)

A description is given work performed on a program to develop an electrically calibrated detector (also called absolute radiometer, absolute detector, and electrically calibrated radiometer) that could be used to realize, maintain, and transfer a scale of total irradiance. The program includes a comprehensive investigation of the theoretical basis of absolute detector radiometry, as well as the design and construction of a number of detectors. A theoretical analysis of the sources of error is also included.

Quantitative determination of smoke and toxic product potential of materials with the AMINCO (registered) NBS smoke density chamber

Quantitative measurements of smoke obscuration produced by standard area samples under high energy pyrolysis both with and without an ignition source, using a collimated vertical light beam in conjunction with an ultra-linear photomultiplier microphotometer are obtainable with the smoke density chamber. Results are expressed in dimensionless specific optical density permitting usage calculations in accordance with a geometric relationship.

Outdoor performance results for NBS Round Robin collector no. 1

The efficiency of a PPG flat-plate solar collector was evaluated utilizing an outdoor solar collector test facility at the NASA-Lewis Research Center, as part of the National Bureau of Standards 'round robin' collector test program. The correlation equation for collector thermal efficiency Eta curve fit of the data was: Eta = 0.666 - 1.003(Btu/hr-sq ft-F) Theta, where the parameter Theta is the difference between the average fluid temperature and the ambient temperature, all divided by the total flux impinging on the collector.

NBS: Materials measurements

Measurements in an Auger spectrometer of surface impurity concentrations on liquid gallium showed that the principle impurities were oxygen and carbon. The impurities showed a tendency to collect into plates or clumps. In Pb rich Pb-Sn off eutectic alloys, macrosegration caused by solutal convection was not reduced by vertical or horizontal fields of 0.1 T, but downward solidification virtually eliminated macrosegration in small diameter samples. Phase assemblages of selected compositions on the joints K(Fe0.5 Si-0.5) O2 -SiO2 and KFeO2 - SiO2 were determined over a large range of oxygen partial pressures and the temperature range 800 C to 1400 C.

NBS: Nondestructive evaluation of nonuniformities in 2219 aluminum alloy plate: Relationship to processing

The compositional homogeneity, microstructure, hardness, electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of 2219 aluminum alloy plates are influenced by the process variables during casting, rolling and thermomechanical treatment. The details of these relationships wre investigated for correctly processed 2219 plate as well as for deviations caused by improper quenching after solution heat treatment. Primary emphasis was been placed on the reliability of eddy current electrical conductivity and hardness as NDE tools to detect variations in mechanical properties.

NBS (National Bureau of Standards): Materials measurements

Work directed toward the measurement of materials properties important to the design and interpretation of space processing experiments and determinations of how the space environment may offer a unique opportunity for performing improved measurements and producing materials with improved properties is reported. Surface tensions and their variations with temperature and impurities; convection during undirectional solidification; and measurement of the high temperature thermophysical properties of tungsten group liquids and solids are discussed and results are summarized.

Data distribution in the NBS Automated Manufacturing Research Facility

The Automated Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF) at the National Bureau of Standards was constructed as a testbed for research in the automation of small batch maufacturing, in particular for systems producing machined parts in lots of 1000 or less. Potential standard interfaces between existing and future components of small batch of factory floor metrology in an automated environment, delivering proven measurement techniques and standard reference materails industry to are identified. Commercially available product are used to construct the facility to expedite transfer of research results into the private sector.
