Simultaneous Celestial Navigation

GPS technology is used in a multitude of applications around the world for navigation. However, GPS can be contested or denied and thus alternatives to GPS are needed for positioning in high-consequence systems. This project investigates a non-RF based method to produce an estimated geolocation using stellar/celestial measurements in combination with measurements from inclinometers and a real time clock. The initial iteration of this method, developed in FY20/21, achieved an estimated location accuracy within approximately 3 kilometers of the true location with a 3-sigma bound of about 8 kilometers. The next iteration aims to enhance this technology further, targeting an estimation accuracy within 100 meters of the true location, representing a 30-fold improvement over the initial method.

Beacon-based precision navigation and timing (PNT) system

Beacon-based Precision Navigation and Timing (PNT) may use a constellation of space vehicles (e.g., small, low cost satellites) coupled to a network of ground stations and a network of beacons. Such a system be provided at a cost that is approximately 100 times lower than GPS both to build and to operate. The resulting system may also provide fast acquisition, improved SNR, improved anti-jam and anti-spoofing capabilities, and six-inch scale location determination, making it applicable to both existing PNT applications and enabling new applications.

NREL Helps Hydropower Projects Navigate Complex Regulatory Currents

Hydropower accounts for about 37% of U.S. renewable electricity generation. But before industry members can license and construct new projects or relicense existing projects, they must navigate complex approvals from federal, state, and tribal authorities. These regulations provide critical protections for water quality, species, cultural resources, and recreation, but they can also increase the costs, risks, and uncertainties to license or relicense projects.

Spatiotemporal Automatic Calibration of Infrastructure Lidar, Radar, and Camera with a Global Navigation Satellite System: Preprint

Robust and accurate perception is important for modern intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which use sensors of various modalities for data fusion to create a digital twin of an intersection. Sensor calibration is an important process that creates a unified coordinate frame for the sensor output data so that it can be used for data fusion. Classical approaches for sensor calibration are time-consuming, require an overlapping field of view for feature matching, and are not feasible for ITS application as they cause disruptions in the flow of traffic. In this paper, we present a spatiotemporal automatic calibration approach to calibrate multiple infrastructure lidar, radar, and cameras installed at a traffic intersection. The approach uses global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning information shared by connected vehicles, and when the vehicle is detected by the sensor, we match the sensor detections with the GNSS coordinates. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with a real-world dataset utilizing detections from two radars, cameras, and lidars with a test vehicle instrumented with a post-processing kinematic (PPK)-corrected GNSS driving past the sensors installed at a four-way traffic intersection. The experimental results show that the proposed automatic calibration approach can achieve the transformation with a root mean squared error of less than 0.5 for radar and lidar and less than 2 for camera detections. The ability to rapidly calibrate sensors not only benefits initial installations, but can also be used for system health monitoring, while utilizing available connected vehicle data to test the real-time sensor fidelity and operational status.

Cancer cell membrane-coated rare earth doped nanoparticles for tumor surgery navigation in NIR-II imaging window

With the attractive characteristics of low toxicity, narrow emission spectra, long fluorescence lifetime, and no photobleaching, rare-earth doped nanoparticles (RENPs) have become promising imaging nanoplatforms in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm). Many studies have been devoted to different surface modification strategies of RENPs to achieve good NIR-II tumor imaging property. However, the tumor imaging efficiency of these approaches remains disappointing. Herein, two methods were pursued to modify RENPs with either polyethylene glycol (PEG) or cancer-cell-membrane to generate PEGylated-RENPs and cancer-cell-membrane camouflaged RENPs (CC-RENPs), respectively. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that cancer-cell-membrane coating of RENPs greatly improved tumor imaging performance in NIR-II window than PEG coating. Besides, CC-RENPs uptakes in liver and spleen significantly decreased. Importantly, CC-RENPs was found to be capable to aid us to pursue precise resection of the tumor. In conclusion, CC-RENPs are capable of targeting tumors and show high tumor NIR-II imaging quality. They are highly promising nanomaterials for future medical applications.

Navigating collinear superspace

We introduce a new set of effective field theory rules for constructing Lagrangians with \( \mathcal{N} \) = 1 supersymmetry in collinear superspace. In the standard superspace treatment, superfields are functions of the coordinates \( \left({x}^{\mu },{\theta}^{\alpha },{\theta}^{\dagger \overset{\cdot }{\alpha }}\right) \) , and supersymmetry preservation is manifest at the Lagrangian level in part due to the inclusion of auxiliary F - and D -term components. By contrast, collinear superspace depends on a smaller set of coordinates ( x μ , η , η † ), where η is a complex Grassmann number without a spinor index. This provides a formulation of supersymmetric theories that depends exclusively on propagating degrees of freedom, at the expense of obscuring Lorentz invariance and introducing inverse momentum scales. After establishing the general framework, we construct collinear superspace Lagrangians for free chiral matter and non-Abelian gauge fields. For the latter construction, an important ingredient is a superfield representation that is simultaneously chiral, anti-chiral, and real; this novel object encodes residual gauge transformations on the light cone. Additionally, we discuss a fundamental obstruction to constructing inter- acting theories with chiral matter; overcoming these issues is the subject of our companion paper, where we introduce a larger set of superfields to realize the full range of interactions compatible with \( \mathcal{N} \) = 1. Along the way, we provide a novel framing of reparametrization invariance using a spinor decomposition, which provides insight into this important light-cone symmetry.

Navigating high-dimensional process-structure–property relations in nanocrystalline Pt-Au alloys with machine learning

For decades, materials scientists have relied on the process-structure–property paradigm to guide investigations into material behaviors. Traditional studies often examine a limited number of process-structure–property variables, striving to elucidate mechanisms governing material response. However, this approach is time consuming and can limit exploration, as well as the discovery of process-structure–property relations in novel materials. In this paper, we combined combinatorial sputter deposition and multi-modal high-throughput materials characterization with feedforward neural networks to establish high-dimensional process-structure–property relations in Pt-Au alloys, yielding nanocrystalline alloys with high hardness and low resistivity relevant to electrical contact switch applications. We mapped three indicators of process conditions (composition and two atomic deposition characteristics) onto four indicators of material structure (X-ray diffraction, film thickness, density, and surface roughness) and two indicators of material properties (hardness and resistivity), resulting in 784 unique combinations evaluated over a 13-dimensional space. The neural networks predicted Pt-Au alloys with 18–24 at.% Au, when deposited at specific conditions, to have a nanoindentation hardness up to 7.2 GPa. This high hardness value, comparable to some steels, represents a 3-fold improvement in hardness over “hard gold”, a commonly used electrical contact alloy, while maintaining requisite electrical conductivity. The neural network models provide an avenue to identify expected process windows capable of maximizing material performance.

Are grid cells used for navigation? On local metrics, subjective spaces, and black holes

The symmetric, lattice-like spatial pattern of grid-cell activity is thought to provide a neuronal global metric for space. This view is compatible with grid cells recorded in empty boxes but inconsistent with data from more naturalistic settings. Here, we review evidence arguing against the global-metric notion, including the distortion and disintegration of the grid pattern in complex and three-dimensional environments. We argue that deviations from lattice symmetry are key for understanding grid-cell function. We propose three possible functions for grid cells, which treat real-world grid distortions as a feature rather than a bug. First, grid cells may constitute a local metric for proximal space rather than a global metric for all space. Second, grid cells could form a metric for subjective action-relevant space rather than physical space. Third, distortions may represent salient locations. Finally, we discuss mechanisms that can underlie these functions. These ideas may transform our thinking about grid cells.
