Scaled ILU Smoothers for Navier-Stokes Pressure Projection

Incomplete LU (ILU) smoothers are effective in the algebraic multigrid (AMG) V-cycle for reducing high-frequency components of the error. However, the requisite direct triangular solves are comparatively slow on GPUs. Previous work has demonstrated the advantages of Jacobi iteration as an alternative to direct solution of these systems. Depending on the threshold and fill-level parameters chosen, the factors can be highly nonnormal and Jacobi is unlikely to converge in a low number of iterations. We demonstrate that row scaling can reduce the departure from normality, allowing us to replace the inherently sequential solve with a rapidly converging Richardson iteration. There are several advantages beyond the lower compute time. Scaling is performed locally for a diagonal block of the global matrix because it is applied directly to the factor. Further, an ILUT Schur complement smoother maintains a constant GMRES iteration count as the number of MPI ranks increases, and thus parallel strong-scaling is improved. Our algorithms have been incorporated into hypre, and we demonstrate improved time to solution for linear systems arising in the Nalu-Wind and PeleLM pressure solvers. For large problem sizes, GMRES+AMG executes at least five times faster when using iterative triangular solves compared with direct solves on massively parallel GPUs.

From Navier-Stokes to Maxwell via Einstein

We revisit the cutoff surface formulation of fluid-gravity duality in the context of the classical double copy. The spacetimes in this fluid-gravity duality are algebraically special, with Petrov type II when the spacetime is four dimensional. We find two special classes of fluids whose dual spacetimes exhibit higher algebraic speciality: constant vorticity flows have type D gravity duals, while potential flows map to type N spacetimes. Using the Weyl version of the classical double copy, we construct associated single-copy gauge fields for both cases, finding that constant vorticity fluids map to a solenoid gauge field. Additionally we find the scalar in a potential flow fluid maps to the zeroth copy scalar.

HePHAESTUS: Heat Pipe Heterogeneous Approximation of Energy and Navier-Stokes Equations, Transience, and Non-Uniform Surface Heating [Slides]

A heat pipe is a liquid/vapor filled metal pipe capable of transporting large amounts of heat through evaporation of a liquid at one end and condensation of vapor at the other end creating a closed fluid loop. Heat pipes are widely used in the cooling of electronics and in space applications. Heat pipes are typically composed of a pipe wall, a wick material, a working fluid, and a central vapor channel. Heat is transferred into the working fluid at the “evaporator” end, through an adiabatic section, and heat is removed at the opposite end at the “condenser.” If no wick is used, gravitational acceleration can circulate the fluid due to the buoyancy of the vapor in the central core and a falling film of liquid at the pipe wall forming a “thermosyphon."
