Strongly vs. weakly coupled in-medium showers: energy stopping in large-Nf QED

Abstract Inside a medium, showers originating from a very high-energy particle may develop via medium-induced splitting processes such as hard bremsstrahlung or pair production. During shower development, two consecutive splittings sometimes overlap quantum mechanically, so that they cannot be treated independently. Some of these effects can be absorbed into an effective value of a medium parameter known as$$ \hat{q} $$ q ̂ . Previous calculations (with certain simplifying assumptions) have found that, after adjusting the value of$$ \hat{q} $$ q ̂ , the leftover effect of overlapping splittings is quite small for purely gluonic large-N c showers but is very much larger for large-N f QED showers, at comparable values ofNα. Those works did not quite make for apples-to-apples comparisons: the gluon shower work investigated energy deposition from a gluon-initiated shower, whereas the QED work investigated charge-deposition from an electron-initiated shower. As a first step to tighten up the comparison, this paper investigates energy deposition in the QED case. Along the way, we develop a framework that should be useful in the future to explore whether the very small effect of overlapping splitting in purely gluonic showers is an artifact of having ignored quarks.

Investigating SU(3) with Nf=8 fundamental fermions at strong renormalized coupling

Lattice simulations have observed a novel strong coupling symmetric mass generation (SMG) phase for the SU(3) gauge system with $N_f=8$ fundamental fermions (represented by two sets of staggered fields) at very large renormalized coupling ($g^2_{GF} \gtrsim 25$). The results of Phys.Rev.D 106 (2022) 014513 suggest that the SMG phase is separated from the weak coupling, conformal phase by a continuous phase transition, implying that the SMG phase exists in the continuum limit. To scrutinize these findings, we are generating a set of large volume zero temperature ensembles using nHYP improved staggered fermions with additional Pauli-Villars fields to tame gauge field fluctuations. We consider the low-lying meson spectrum and verify the existence of the SMG phase. Based on a finite size scaling analysis we predict that the phase transition between the strong and weak coupling phases is likely governed by a merged fixed point that is ultraviolet in the strong coupling but infrared in the weak coupling side. This finding suggests that the SU(3) 8-flavor system sits at the opening of the conformal window

Temporal serum neurofilament light chain concentrations in sheep inoculated with the agent of classical scrapie

Objective: Neurofilament light chain (Nf-L) has been used to detect neuroaxonal damage in the brain caused by physical injury or disease. The purpose of this study was to determine if serum Nf-L could be used as a biomarker for pre-symptomatic detection of scrapie in sheep. Methods: Four sheep with prion protein genotype AVQQ were intranasally inoculated with the classical scrapie strain x124. Blood was collected every 4 weeks until 44 weeks post-inoculation, at which point weekly collection commenced. Serum was analyzed using single molecule array (Quanterix SR-X) to evaluate Nf-L concentrations. Results: Scrapie was confirmed in each sheep by testing homogenized brainstem at the level of the obex with a commercially available enzyme immunoassay. Increased serum Nf-L concentrations were identified above the determined cutoff during the last tenth of the respective incubation period for each sheep. Throughout the time course study, PrP Sc accumulation was not detected antemortem by immunohistochemistry in rectal tissue at any timepoint for any sheep. RT-QuIC results were inconsistently positive throughout the timepoints tested for each sheep; however, each sheep had at least one timepoint detected positive. When assessing serum Nf-L utility using receiver operator characteristic curves against different clinical parameters, such as asymptomatic and symptomatic (pruritus or neurologic signs), results showed that Nf-L was most useful at being an indicator of disease only late in disease progression when neurologic signs were present. Conclusion: Serum Nf-L concentrations in the cohort of sheep increased as disease progressed; however, serum Nf-L did not increase during the presymptomatic window. The levels increased substantially throughout the final 10% of the animals’ scrapie incubation period when other clinical signs were present. Serum Nf-L is not a reliable biomarker for pre-clinical detection of scrapie.

Enhanced flexibility and thermal conductivity of HfC decorated carbon nanofiber mats

Future-generation spacecraft components allude discovery of novel materials that can withstand extreme environments (>2000 °C). The combined effect of ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) and carbon fibers (C f ) can satisfy the demanding requirements of aerospace applications. A novel, hybrid, and flexible hafnium carbide (HfC)-decorated carbon nanofiber (C nf ) mat was fabricated via electrospinning. Enhanced thermal stability of the flexible HfC decorated C nf over C nf can be elucidated from the 20-fold increment in thermal conductivity and the onset of degradation at higher temperatures (840 °C). Successful integration of multi-layered sandwich lattice using in-housed fabricated HfC decorated C nf showed retention of the fibrous structure even after extreme spark plasma sintering (SPS) process at 1850 °C. Fabricating a similar multi-layered structure using procured C f was unsuccessful due to bundled agglomeration and micron-sized fibers. High-load indentation suggests that HfC decorated C nf interlayer is stronger (~2.3 times) than the parent UHTC with no cracking at the interface. Compared with the HfC matrix, the indentation-damaged area at the interface reduced up to ~56% due to toughening mechanisms such as C nf , fiber pull-out and bridging. The synthesized HfC decorated Cnf mat is proposed as an ultra-thin filler material for joining similar or dissimilar UHTCs while maintaining similar chemistry and better mechanical integrity at the interface. Furthermore, the findings insinuate a new paradigm in designing hybrid and flexible ceramic-containing materials for thermal protection systems (TPS) of future-generation spacecraft components that can mitigate failure in extreme environments (>2000 °C).

Dissecting neurofilament tail sequence-phosphorylation-structure relationships with multicomponent reconstituted protein brushes

Neurofilaments (NFs) are multisubunit, bottlebrush-shaped intermediate filaments abundant in the axonal cytoskeleton. Each NF subunit contains a long intrinsically disordered tail domain, which protrudes from the NF core to form a “brush” surrounding each NF. Precisely how the tails’ variable charge patterns and repetitive phosphorylation sites mediate their conformation within the brush remains an open question in axonal biology. We address this problem by grafting recombinant NF tail protein constructs NF-Light, -Medium, and -Heavy (NFL, NFM, and NFH) to surfaces, yielding protein brushes of defined stoichiometry that can be phosphorylated in vitro. Atomic force microscopy measurements reveal that brush height depends on composition monotonically but not always linearly for binary NFL:NFM or NFL:NFH systems, and that NFM-based brushes are highly extended, while brushes incorporating the much larger NFH are surprisingly compact even after multisite phosphorylation. Complementary self-consistent field theory (SCFT) predicts multilayer brush morphologies for NFM and phosphorylated NFH brushes. Further experiments and SCFT analysis with designed mutants reveal that N-terminal negative charges in the NFH tail repel phosphorylated residues to generate the multilayer morphology, while the C-terminal charge-neutral region contributes to multilayer brush morphology but not total brush height. Charge-shuffled NFM variants show that charge segregation promotes brush collapse near physiological ionic strengths. Collectively, this study supports a role for NFM in establishing a dynamic range for NF brush conformation, lending insight into previous in vitro and in vivo findings. More broadly, this work establishes a platform for dissecting contributions of disordered protein sequence to conformation at interfaces.

Random Polymerization Strategy Leads to a Family of Donor Polymers Enabling Well‐Controlled Morphology and Multiple Cases of High‐Performance Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Developing high‐performance donor polymers is important for nonfullerene organic solar cells (NF‐OSCs), as state‐of‐the‐art nonfullerene acceptors can only perform well if they are coupled with a matching donor with suitable energy levels. However, there are very limited choices of donor polymers for NF‐OSCs, and the most commonly used ones are polymers named PM6 and PM7, which suffer from several problems. First, the performance of these polymers (particularly PM7) relies on precise control of their molecular weights. Also, their optimal morphology is extremely sensitive to any structural modification. In this work, a family of donor polymers is developed based on a random polymerization strategy. These polymers can achieve well‐controlled morphology and high‐performance with a variety of chemical structures and molecular weights. The polymer donors are D–A1–D–A2‐type random copolymers in which the D and A1 units are monomers originating from PM6 or PM7, while the A2 unit comprises an electron‐deficient core flanked by two thiophene rings with branched alkyl chains. Consequently, multiple cases of highly efficient NF‐OSCs are achieved with efficiencies between 16.0% and 17.1%. As the electron‐deficient cores can be changed to many other structural units, the strategy can easily expand the choices of high‐performance donor polymers for NF‐OSCs.
