Rossi-alpha Analysis of CURIE Experiment [Slides]

Critical assembly measurement and operations are crucial to the development of benchmark data. Knowledge of the prompt neutron lifetime informs on the state of the system’s neutron spectrum. Rossi-alpha analysis can give us time-dependent information on the system. Teflon was selected, via genetic algorithm, as a moderator to target the URR in uranium for CURIE. Rossi-alpha measurements of the assembly's approach to critical using He-3 detectors estimated the prompt neutron decay constant (α) at delayed critical. α values of several subcritical measurements were then used to predict the α value at delayed critical.

Chlorine Worth Study in Support of PF-4 Operations [Slides]

Aqueous Chloride Operations at PF-4 are important because they recover Pu from other processes, reduce waste sent to WIPP, and increase throughput for Am production. Aqueous Chloride Operations have very conservative mass limits (~520 grams Pu) and significant amounts of Chlorine but calculations not crediting Cl-35 neutron absorption accounting for Cl-35 absorption leads to higher mass limits. Can experiments be designed/conducted to provide technical justification to NCS in order to increase mass limits?

Integral Experiment Request 523 Feasibility Study (Summary Report)

This report documents the feasibility phase of the Critical Experiment Design (CED) conducted as part of integral experiment request (IER) 523. The purpose of IER-523 is to explore the effects of using 35 weight percent enriched uranium dioxide-beryllium oxide (UO 2 -BeO) material on critical configurations using the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) at Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia). Preliminary experiment design concepts, neutronic analysis results, and proposed paths for continuing the CED process are presented.

IER 557: Godiva IV Reproducibility/Characterization [Slides]

The primary goal of the IER 557 Godiva IV reproducibility/characterization process is to determine reproducibility for 70°C bursts. The secondary goal is to characterize the radiation field, including absolute calibration with radchem counting of fission foils.

Verification of Revised and Upcoming Nuclear Data Sensitivity MCNP Features [Poster]

Nuclear data is ubiquitous across nuclear applications. Improved nuclear data means more accurate simulations. Past focus on k eff caused compensating error and areas of unvalidated nuclear data. Sensitivity can be used to optimize experiments to focus on specific areas. Sensitivity capabilities must be expanded and improved to design multivariate experiments focused on nuclear data needs.

Deterministic and Monte Carlo Nuclear Data Adjustment Methods [Slides]

For the Bayesian Monte Carlo methodology, a need to understand convergence of the posterior moments as a function of the number of parameter realizations is required. In high-dimensional systems, it can be very costly to sample entire parameter space and perform functional evaluation for every realization. Bayesian Monte Carlo allows one to relax the GLLS approximations of model linearity and prior/posterior PDF shape. The Bayesian Stochastic Collocation Method is a deterministic approach to “sample” the parameter space. It allows one to relax the GLLS approximations of model linearity and posterior PDF shape. Higher-order posterior moments (i.e., skewness, kurtosis, etc.) can be studied through polynomial expansion. Tensor product quadrature scales poorly and can use sparse grid quadrature methods.

IER 501: Pulsed Neutron Die-Away Experiments at LLNL [Slides]

Pulsed neutron die away experiments occur as follows: (1) a pulse of neutrons is injected into a target material via a D-T neutron generator, (2) neutrons thermalize, (3) neutrons spatially equilibrate, and (4) exponential decay is measured in fundamental mode.

Temperature Dependent Experiments using SPRF/CX [Slides]

A range of fuel arrays has been examined for both fuel types and representative arrays were selected. Temperature dependent calculations were performed to show the performance of the arrays. Modification to the SPRF/CX facility has been proposed to aid SNL staff in the execution of temperature dependent experiments.

Horizontal Split Table Conceptual Design for Validation of Nuclear Data used in Advanced Reactors [Slides]

A methodology to create conceptual designs of benchmark critical experiments for advanced reactors nuclear data testing and validation was developed. A first concept was explored, pebble-bed high-temperature gas cooled reactor, based on the HTR-10 reactor. The very high correlation is a proof of concept that the design is similar to the application, and performing such critical experiments would help nuclear data testing and validation. This proof-of-concept was included in the IER-539 CED-1:Preliminary Design of a New Horizontal Split Table report. Other concepts could be explored if needed, such as Molten-salt reactor, Sodium-cooled fast reactor or Heat pipe reactors/Microreactor.

Critical Experiment Design Phase 2 Report for Integral Request 304

This report documents the second phase of the critical experiment design process (CED-2) conducted as part of integral experiment request (IER) 304. The purpose of IER-304 is to develop a temperature-dependent critical experiment capability at the Sandia National Laboratories critical experiment facility using low-enriched uranium oxide fuel. Only a few benchmark quality critical experiments are currently available to validate criticality safety computational methods at temperatures other than room temperature. Recent advancements in computational techniques such as implementation of on-the-fly Doppler broadening techniques and advanced treatment of thermal scattering data necessitate the development of additional experimental capabilities in this area. The work described in this report developed representative configurations using 7uPCX and BUCCX fuels, analyzed the physics exercised by the different arrays, and analyzed the estimated experimental uncertainties. This report also scopes the information necessary for performing modifications to the reactor to accommodate operation at elevated and reduced temperatures.

Chlorine Worth Study in Support of PF-4 Operations [Slides]

The primary concern of this study is if experiments can be designed/conducted to provide technical justification to NCS in order to increase mass limits. This goal is in direct support of 30 pits per year mission, one of the top priorities for NNSA. The accelerated timeline is as follows: Initial tasking, June 2020; preliminary design completion (CED-1 equivalent), November 2020; final design completion (CED-2 equivalent), March 2021; part receipt and inspection completion (CED-3a equivalent), October 2021; experiment execution (CED-3b equivalent), December 2021; experiment documentation write-up completion (start CED-4a equivalent), January 2022; and ICSBEP target (CED-4a equivalent), Fall 2022.

IER-523: Feasibility of Experiments Focused on Measuring the Effects of UO 2 BeO Material on Critical Configurations using 7uPCX [Slides]

Sandia National Labs has access to unused ACRR fuel, which is unique in its enrichment 35% and material composition BeO. ACRR fuel is available in quantities well above what is needed for experiments. Two experiment concepts have been investigated: UO 2 BeO fuel elements and pellets with 7uPCX fuel. The worth of UO 2 BeO is large enough to be well above the anticipated experiment uncertainties.

Analysis of a Bulk 237 Np Oxide Sample for Trace Actinides

A neptunium oxide sample was dissolved and trace actinide constituents were measured by isotope dilution ICP-MS (for 239–244 Pu, 233–238 U, 237 Np, 241–243 Am) and alpha spectrometry ( 238 Pu, 242 Cm, 244 Cm). This material contained significant quantities of transuranic elements, notably americium and curium. The isotopic composition of the material will continue to evolve over time due to radioactive decay; the measurements reported here include all isotopes decay corrected to a reference date of 1/1/2022. These factors may be considerations in criticality studies of the related 237 Np sphere.
