FeO and MgO in plagioclase of lunar anorthosites: Igneous or metamorphic?

The combined evidence from terrestrial anorthosites and experimental laboratory studies strongly implies that lunar anorthosites have been subjected to high-grade metamorphic events that have erased the igneous signatures of FeO and MgO in their plagioclases. Arguments to the contrary have, to this point, been more hopeful than rigorous.

MgO-Al2O3-ZrO2 Amorphous Ternary Composite: A Dense and Stable Optical Coating

The process-parameter-dependent optical and structural properties of MgO-Al2O3-ZrO2 ternary mixed-composite material were investigated. Optical properties were derived from spectrophotometric measurements. The surface morphology, grain size distributions, crystallographic phases, and process- dependent material composition of films were investigated through the use of atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. Energy-dispersive x-ray analysis made evident the correlation between the optical constants and the process-dependent compositions in the films. It is possible to achieve environmentally stable amorphous films with high packing density under certain optimized process conditions.

Thin Film Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 Ku- and K-Band Phase Shifters Grown on MgO Substrates

We report measurements of gold circuits fabricated on four Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 films doped with 1% Mn grown on MgO substrates by laser ablation. Low frequency measurements of epsilon(sub r) and tan(delta) on interdigital capacitors are compared with high frequency measurements of phase shift and insertion loss on coupled microstrip phase shifters done on the same films. The variation in temperature of both high and low frequency device parameters is compared. Annealed and unannealed films are compared. Room temperature figures of merit of phase shift per insertion loss of up to 58.4 C/dB at 18 GHz and 400 V dc bias were measured.

The Effects of Gravity on the Combustion Synthesis of B2O3-Al2O3-MgO Glass Ceramic Composites

Glass ceramic composites based on B2O3-Al2O3-MgO have been produced by combustion synthesis in a Self-propagating mode. The gravitational effects on the combustion characteristics such as combustion wave velocity (V), and combustion temperature (T(sub c)) were studied. The results showed that the gravitational effects on these parameters were inconclusive. The microstructure of this system has also been analyzed with X-ray Diffraction and light microscopy. These results showed a higher amount of divitrification occurs under both reduced gravity and high gravity conditions. The gravitational effects on formation of pores, overall porosity and apparent porosity for this family of glass-ceramics also shows to be inconclusive. Possible reasons for these results are discussed.

Investigation of Synthetic Mg(1.3)V(1.7)O4 Spinel with MgO Inclusions: Case Study of a Spinel with an Apparently occupied Interstitial Site

A magnesium vanadate spinel crystal, ideally MgV2O4, synthesized at 1 bar, 1200 C and equilibrated under FMQ + 1.3 log f(sub o2) condition, was investigated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe, and electron backscatter (EBSD). The initial X-ray structure refinements gave tetrahedral and octahedral site occupancies, along with the presence of 0.053 apfu Mg at an interstitial octahedral site . Back-scattered electron (BSE) images and electron microprobe analyses revealed the existence of an Mg-rich phase in the spinel matrix, which was too small (less than or equal to 3microns) for an accurate chemical determination. The EBSD analysis combined with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscop[y (XEDS) suggested that the Mg-rich inclusions are periclase oriented coherently with the spinel matrix. The final structure refinements were optimized by subtracting the X-ray intensity contributions (approx. 9%) of periclase reflections, which eliminated the interstitial Mg. This study provides insight into possible origins of refined interstitial cations reported in the the literature for spinel, and points to the difficulty of using only X-ray diffraction data to distinguish a spinel with interstitial cations from one with coherently oriented MgO inclusions.

Thermochemistry of CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS) and Advanced Thermal and Environmental Barrier Coating Systems

CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS) oxides are constituents in a broad number of materials and minerals which have recently inferred to discussions in materials science, planetary science, geochemistry and cosmochemistry communities. In materials science, there is increasing interest in the degradation studies of thermal (TBC) and environmental (EBC) barrier coatings of gas turbines by molten CMAS. CMAS minerals usually are carried by the intake air into gas turbines, e.g. in aircraft engines, and their deposits react at high temperatures (1000C) with the coating materials. This causes degradation and accelerated failure of the static and rotating components of the turbine engines. We discuss some preliminary results of the reactions between CMAS and Rare-Earth (RE Y, Yb, Dy, Gd, Nd and Sm) oxide stabilized ZrO2 or HfO2 systems, and the stability of the resulting oxides and silicates. Plasma sprayed hollow tube samples ( 2.2 mm and 26 mm height) were half filled with CMAS powder, wrapped and sealed with platinum foil, and heat treated at 1310 C for 5h. Samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and cross section electron microscopy analysis.

High Temperature Degradation of Advanced Thermal and Environmental Barrier Coatings (TEBCs) by CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS)

There is increasing interest in the degradation studies of thermal and environmental barrier coatings (TEBCs) of gas turbines by molten CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS). CMAS minerals are usually referred as silica-containing sand dust and volcano ash materials that are carried by the intake air into gas turbines, e.g. aircraft engines. The low-melting deposits react at high temperatures (1000C) with the coating materials. This causes degradation and accelerated coating failure of the static and rotating components of the turbine engines. We discuss some preliminary results of the reactions between CMAS and Rare-Earth (RE Y, Yb, Dy, Gd, Nd and Sm) oxide stabilized ZrO2 or HfO2 systems, and the stability of the resulting oxides and silicates. Plasma sprayed hollow tube samples (outer diameter 4.7 mm, wall thickness 0.76 mm and 26 mm height) were half filled with CMAS powder, wrapped and sealed with platinum foil, and heat- treated at 1310 C for 5h. Samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and cross section electron microscopy analysis.

The Low-Lying Electronic States of MgO

The low-lying singlet and triplet states of MgO have been studied using a SA-CASCF/ICMRCI approach using the aug-cc-pV5Z basis set. The spectroscopic constants (r(sub e), W(sub e), and T(sub e)) are in good agreement with the available experimental data. The computed lifetime for the B state is in excellent agreement with two of the three experimental results. The d state lifetime is in good agreement with experiment, while the computed D state lifetime is about twice as long as experiment.

The Convergence of the Coupled Cluster Approach for MgO

The X(exp 1)Sigma(+) state of MgO shows significant differences between the CCSD(T) and CCSDT results and even some significant differences between the CCSDT and CCSDTQ results. The CCSDT(Q) results for this state do not agree well with the CCSDTQ results, as has been found for other systems. Unlike the X state, the state, which is well described by a single configuration, shows much less dependence on level of correlation treatment. Despite the slow convergence of the valence treatment of the X state, the effect of core correlation converges rapidly with level of correlation treatment.

Melting and Crystallization Behavior of CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 Silicates Relevant to Turbine Engine Applications

The melting and crystallization behavior of four quaternary CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2(CMAS) silicates were investigated. The CaO:SiO2 ratios of these systems were based on various terrestrial sources of ingested particles relevant to gas turbine engine operating environments. Melting behavior was characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, and high temperature intrinsic crystallization products were determined by furnace heat treatments of the glasses at 1200°C, 1300°C, and 1400°C. The silicates exhibited a wide range of melting temperatures from ~1240°C up to ~1500°C, with most of the compositions exhibiting incongruent melting behavior. High temperature crystallization products included CaSiO3,CaAl2Si2O8, Ca2MgSi2O7, and Ca(Mg,Al)Si2O6, although SiO2 was the only crystalline phase observed at 1400°C.
