𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet axes difference in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of 𝐷 0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum 𝑝$^{ch jet}_{T}$ ≥ 10 GeV/𝑐 and 𝐷 0 mesons with 𝑝$^{D^0}_{T}$ ≥ 5 GeV/𝑐. In this 𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of 𝐷 0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis−D 0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , between the three jet axes. The 𝐷 0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the 𝐷 0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.

Production of η and η ′ mesons in p p and p Pb collisions

The production of η and η ′ mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13 TeV and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV . The studies are performed in center-of-mass (c.m.) rapidity regions 2.5 < y c . m . < 3.5 (forward rapidity) and − 4.0 < y c . m . < − 3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The η and η ′ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5 < p T < 10 GeV and 3 < p T < 10 GeV , respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for η and η ′ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of η mesons are also used to calculate η / π 0 cross-section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as η and η ′ meson fragmentation. ©2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Algebraic model to study the internal structure of pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content

The internal structure of all lowest-lying pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content is studied in detail using an algebraic model that has been applied recently, and successfully, to the same physical observables of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with hidden-flavor quark content, from light to heavy quark sectors. The algebraic model consists on constructing simple and evidence-based of the meson’s Bethe-Salpeter amplitude (BSA) and quark’s propagator in such a way that the Bethe-Salpeter wave function (BSWF) can then be readily computed algebraically. Its subsequent projection onto the light front yields the light front wave function (LFWF) whose form allows us a simple access to the valence-quark parton distribution amplitude (PDA) by integrating over the transverse momentum squared. We exploit our current knowledge of the PDAs of lowest-lying pseudoscalar heavy-light mesons to compute their generalized parton distributions (GPDs) through the overlap representation of LFWFs. From these three dimensional knowledge, different limits/projections lead us to deduce the related parton distribution functions (PDFs), electromagnetic form factors (EFFs), and impact parameter space GPDs (IPS-GPDs). When possible, we make explicit comparisons with available experimental results and earlier theoretical predictions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Hadronic structure on the light front. VIII. Light scalar and vector mesons

We use the QCD instanton vacuum model to discuss the emergence of the light scalar and vector mesons on the light front. We take into account both the instanton and anti-instanton single and molecular interactions on the light quarks, in the form of nonlocal effective interactions. Although the molecular induced interactions are suppressed by a power of the packing fraction, they are still sufficient to bind the vector mesons, while keeping most of the scalar spectrum relatively unchanged. We explicitly derive the light front distribution amplitudes and partonic functions for the scalar and vector mesons, and compare them after pertinent QCD evolution, to the available empirical and lattice measured counterparts. The Dirac electric form factors for both the pion and ρ meson are derived, and shown to compare well with current data. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Light scalar meson and decay constant in SU(3) gauge theory with eight dynamical flavors

The SU(3) gauge theory with N f = 8 nearly massless Dirac fermions has long been of theoretical and phenomenological interest due to the near-conformality arising from its proximity to the conformal window. One particularly interesting feature is the emergence of a relatively light, stable flavor-singlet scalar meson σ ( J P C = 0 + + ) in contrast to the N f = 2 theory QCD. In this work, we study the finite-volume dependence of the σ meson correlation function computed in lattice gauge theory and determine the σ meson mass and decay constant extrapolated to the infinite-volume limit. We also determine the infinite-volume mass and decay constant of the flavor-nonsinglet scalar meson a 0 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Constraints on light dark sector particles from lifetime difference of heavy neutral mesons

Heavy meson decays with missing energy in the final state offer interesting avenues to search for light invisible new physics such as dark matter (DM). In this context, we show that such new physics (NP) interactions also affect lifetime difference in neutral meson-antimeson mixing. We consider general dimension-six effective quark interactions involving a pair of DM particles and calculate their contributions to lifetime difference in beauty and charm meson systems. We use the latest data on mixing observables to constrain the relevant effective operators. We find that lifetime differences provide novel and complementary flavor constraints compared to those obtained from heavy meson decays. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of double J / ψ meson production in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb − 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ − decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Production cross sections of light and charmed mesons in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation near 10.58 GeV

We report measurements of production cross sections for 𝜌 + , 𝜌 0 , 𝜔, 𝐾* + , 𝐾* 0 , 𝜙, 𝜂, 𝐾$^0_𝑆$, 𝑓 0 ⁡(980), 𝐷 + , 𝐷 0 , 𝐷$^+_𝑠$, 𝐷* + , 𝐷* 0 , and 𝐷*$^+_𝑠$ in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collisions at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV. The data were recorded by the Belle experiment, consisting of 571 fb −1 at 10.58 GeV and 74 fb −1 at 10.52 GeV. Production cross sections are extracted as a function of the fractional hadron momentum 𝑥 𝑝 . The measurements are compared to pythia Monte Carlo generator predictions with various fragmentation settings, including those that have increased fragmentation into vector mesons over pseudoscalar mesons. The cross sections measured for light hadrons are consistent with no additional increase of vector over pseudoscalar mesons. The charmed-meson cross sections are compared to earlier measurements—when available—including older Belle results, which they supersede. They are in agreement before application of an improved initial-state radiation correction procedure that causes slight changes in their 𝑥 𝑝 shapes.

Interacting mesons as degrees of freedom in a chiral model

Here, we study the equation of state of hot and dense hadronic matter using an extended chiral mean field (CMF) model framework where the addition is the inclusion of interactions of thermally excited mesons. This is implemented by calculating the in-medium masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, obtained through the explicit chiral symmetry-breaking and vector-interaction terms in the Lagrangian, respectively, prior to applying the mean-field approximation. As a result, the in-medium meson contributions generate a feedback term to the CMF’s equations of motion, which then modifies the equation of state. With this improvement, we quantify the effect on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter through comparisons with state-of-the-art lattice QCD results and other hadronic models like the hadron resonance gas model. We find that the results of the updated hadronic CMF model with an improved meson description (mCMF) provide a better agreement with lattice-QCD data for thermodynamic state variables across a wide range of temperatures and baryon chemical potentials.

Strange Mesons and Gluonic Excitations

In the standard model of particle physics, the interactions between the fundamental constituents of nuclear matter, quarks and gluons, are governed by the theory of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). A central goal of nuclear physics is to understand how hadrons, such as protons and neutrons, are formed from these underlying quark and gluon degrees of freedom. A hadron is primarily constructed from three quarks or a quark-antiquark pair; however, the theory of QCD allows for much more exotic configurations. One of the predicted exotic configurations is known as a hybrid meson, which contains an excited gluonic field in addition to the usual quark-antiquark pair. This project aims to search for and study these gluonic excitations using the Gluonic Excitation (GlueX) experiment at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA. The discovery potential of the experiment will be significantly extended by studying the quark flavor composition of the meson spectrum through the completion and use of an enhanced detector to identify mesons containing strange quarks. The unprecedented statistical precision of the data collected at GlueX will allow us to search for a pattern of light-quark hybrid mesons, providing new insight into the interactions that bind the fundamental quarks and gluons into the hadrons we observe in nature.

Why quarkonium hybrid coupling to two $S$-wave heavy-light mesons is not suppressed

We examine the couplings of quarkonium hybrids to heavy-light meson pairs in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for QCD. The lowest hybrid multiplets consist of bound states of the Π u and Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potentials. We find that the Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potential can couple to pairs of S-wave mesons through string breaking, while the Π u potential cannot. From this observation, we derive model-independent selection rules that contradict previous expectations that quarkonium hybrids are forbidden to decay into pairs of S-wave mesons. These Born-Oppenheimer selection rules are consistent with the partial decay widths of the lowest charmonium hybrid with exotic quantum numbers J PC = 1 -+ recently calculated using lattice QCD.

Observation of Coherent 𝜙⁡(1020) Meson Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral PbPb Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 5.36 TeV

The first observation of coherent 𝜙⁡(1020) meson photoproduction off heavy nuclei is presented using ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.36 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS experiment and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.62 μ⁢𝑏 −1 . The 𝜙⁡(1020) meson signals are reconstructed via the 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − decay channel. The production cross section is presented as a function of the 𝜙⁡(1020) meson rapidity in the range 0.3 < |𝑦| < 1.0, probing gluons that carry a fraction of the nucleon momentum (𝑥) around 10 −4 . The observed cross section exhibits little dependence on rapidity and is significantly suppressed, by a factor of ∼5, compared to a baseline model that treats a nucleus as a collection of free nucleons. Theoretical models that incorporate the nuclear shadowing effect generally provide a better description of the 𝜙⁡(1020) data than those incorporating gluon saturation. This study establishes a powerful new tool for exploring nuclear effects and nuclear gluonic structure in the small-𝑥 regime at a unique energy scale bridging the perturbative and nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics domains.

φ meson production in ρ + Al, ρ + Au, d + Au , and 3 He + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We report small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the φ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured φ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems p+Al, p+Au, and 3 He+Au, as well as d+Au at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. The comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of φ mesons at midrapidity may be different in p+Al versus p/d/ 3 He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in p/d/ 3 He+Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in p+Al collisions.

Studying the interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons

The two-particle momentum correlation functions between charm mesons ( D * ± and D ± ) and charged light-flavor mesons ( π ± and K ± ) in all charge combinations are measured for the first time by the ALICE Collaboration in high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV . For DK and D * K pairs, the experimental results are in agreement with theoretical predictions of the residual strong interaction based on quantum chromodynamics calculations on the lattice and chiral effective field theory. In the case of D π and D * π pairs, tension between the calculations including strong interactions and the measurement is observed. For all particle pairs, the data can be adequately described by Coulomb interaction only, indicating a shallow interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons. Finally, the scattering lengths governing the residual strong interaction of the D π and D * π systems are determined by fitting the experimental correlation functions with a model that employs a Gaussian potential. The extracted values are small and compatible with zero. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Cross sections of 𝜂 mesons in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions at forward rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 GeV and central rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 510 GeV

We present the first measurements of the forward and midrapidity 𝜂-meson cross sections from 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 and 510 GeV, respectively. We also report the midrapidity 𝜂/𝜋 0 ratio at 510 GeV. The forward cross section is measured differentially in 𝜂-meson transverse momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) from 1.0 to 6.5 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity 3.0 < |𝜂| < 3.8. The midrapidity cross section is measured from 3.5 to 44 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity |𝜂| < 0.35. Both cross sections serve as critical inputs to an updated global analysis of the 𝜂-meson fragmentation functions.

The role of charm and unflavored mesons in prompt atmospheric lepton fluxes

The all-sky very-high-energy (10 4 − 10 6 GeV) atmospheric muon flux measured by IceCube shows a spectral hardening at the highest energies, indicating the presence of a prompt component. IceCube has also measured the atmospheric muon neutrino flux at high energy. However, since this flux is dominated by astrophysical neutrinos, only an upper bound can be placed on the prompt atmospheric ν μ + $\overline{ν}$ μ contribution. In this work, we provide a new evaluation of the prompt atmospheric muon flux including an intrinsic charm component in the cosmic ray-air interactions. The latter enhances the forward production of $\overline{D}$ 0 , D – and Λc, which subsequently decay into final states containing muons and muon neutrinos. We show how the increase in the prompt muon flux due to intrinsic charm is accompanied by a corresponding enhancement in the prompt muon neutrino flux. We implement different intrinsic charm production models in MCEq to calculate the resulting lepton fluxes. We discuss the challenges of achieving predictions that are simultaneously consistent with both IceCube’s high-energy atmospheric muon flux measurements and IceCube upper bounds on the prompt muon neutrino flux, and we quantify the resulting discrepancies. As possible solutions, we explore scaling of the unflavored meson contributions to the prompt atmospheric muon flux to assess how such adjustments can reconcile these differences. The tensions emphasized in our work call for a refinement of the hadronic interaction models, especially the production of unflavored mesons, and for new experimental data sensitive to unflavored meson and heavy flavor production with reliable estimates of the associated uncertainties. We suggest that the energy and zenith angle dependence of muon and neutrino flux ratios from future neutrino telescope measurements may help to disentangle different scenarios.

Observation of B$^0_s$ mesons and measurement of the B$^0_s$/B$^+$ yield ratio in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The B$^0_s$ and B$^+$ production yields are measured in PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The data sample, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb$^{-1}$. The mesons are reconstructed in the exclusive decay channels B$^0_s$$\to$ J/$\psi(\mu^+\mu^-)\phi($K$^+$K$^-)$ and B$^+$$\to$ J/$\psi(\mu^+\mu^-)$K$^+$. The B$^0_s$ meson is observed with a statistical significance in excess of five standard deviations for the first time in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The measurements are performed as functions of the transverse momentum of the B mesons and of the PbPb collision centrality. The ratio of production yields of B$^0_s$ and B$^+$ is measured and compared to theoretical models that include quark recombination effects.

Glueball-meson molecules

Experimental searches for pure glueball states have proven challenging and so far yielded no results. This is believed to occur because glueballs mix with the ordinary $q\bar{q}$ states with the same quantum numbers. We will discuss an alternative mechanism, the formation of the glueball-meson molecular states. We will argue that the wave functions of already observed excited meson states may contain a significant part due to such molecular states. We discuss the phenomenology of glueball-meson molecules and comment on a possible charmless component of the XYZ states.
