Linear voltage-to-frequency converter

Voltage-to-frequency converter, with ultra-high input impedance and linear response, is used in analog to digital data conversion systems. Voltage-to-current converter, using MOSFET devices and a multivibrator, has ultra-linear voltage-to-frequency characteristics. It replaces voltage sensitive magnetic-core oscillators.

Two-axis flux gate magnetometer

Magnetometer uses single sensing head to measure magnetic flux density along two axes simultaneously. The sensor head consists of permalloy core and four windings. Two windings perform a multivibrator function, the two remaining windings sense magnetic fields. The smaller magnetometer performs same functions as more complex devices.

Acuna, M. H.

High-accuracy detector for laser radar

Signal processing technique permits accurate timing of pulse position independent of pulse amplitude. Technique utilizes differentiator, limiter amplifier, Schmitt trigger, and monostable multivibrator to produce standard-width pulse whose leading edge corresponds with the maximum of the received signal. This pulse stops the range counter.

Determining distance to lightning strokes from a single station

Apparatus is described for determining the distance to lightning strokes from a single station. The apparatus includes a first loop antenna system for sensing the magnetic field produced by the lightning which is filtered, square rooted, and fed into a peak voltage holding circuit. A second antenna is provided for sensing the electric field produced by the lightning which is fed into a filter, an absolute value meter, and to a peak voltage holding circuit. A multivibrator gates the magnetic and electric signals through the peak holding circuits to a ratio meter which produces a signal corresponding to the ratio between the magnetic component and the electric component. The amplitude of this signal is proportional to the distance from the apparatus to the lightning stroke.

Logarithmic-function generator

Solid-state logarithmic-function generator is compact and provides improved accuracy. Generator includes a stable multivibrator feeding into RC circuit. Resulting exponentially decaying voltage is compared with input signal. Generator output is proportional to time required for exponential voltage to decay from preset reference level to level of input signal.

Random pulse generator

An exemplary embodiment of the present invention provides a source of random width and random spaced rectangular voltage pulses whose mean or average frequency of operation is controllable within prescribed limits of about 10 hertz to 1 megahertz. A pair of thin-film metal resistors are used to provide a differential white noise voltage pulse source. Pulse shaping and amplification circuitry provide relatively short duration pulses of constant amplitude which are applied to anti-bounce logic circuitry to prevent ringing effects. The pulse outputs from the anti-bounce circuits are then used to control two one-shot multivibrators whose output comprises the random length and random spaced rectangular pulses. Means are provided for monitoring, calibrating and evaluating the relative randomness of the generator.

Open-loop digital frequency multiplier

Monostable multivibrator is implemented by using digital integrated circuits where multiplier constant is too large for conventional phase-locked-loop integrated circuit. A 400 Hz clock is generated by divide-by-N counter from 1 Hz timing reference.

Rapid and precise measurement of flatband voltage

The paper outlines the design, principles of operation, and calibration of a five-IC network intended to give a rapid, precise, and automatic determination of the flatband voltage of MOS capacitors. The basic principle of measurement is to compare the analog output voltage of a capacitance meter - which is directly proportional to the capacitance being measured - with a preset or dialed-in voltage proportional to the calculated flatband capacitance by means of a comparator circuit. The bias to the MOS capacitor supplied through the capacitance meter is provided by a ramp voltage going from a negative toward a positive voltage level and vice versa. The network employs two monostable multivibrators for reading and recording the flatband voltage and for resetting the initial conditions and restarting the ramp. The flatband voltage can be held and read on a digital voltmeter.

Open loop digital frequency multiplier

An open loop digital frequency multiplier is described which has a multiplied output synchronized to low frequency clock pulse. The system includes a multistage digital counter which provides a pulse output as a function of an integer divisor. The integer divisor and the timing or counting cycle of the counter are interrelated to the frequency of a clock input. The counting cycle is controlled by a one shot multivibrator which, in turn, is driven by a reference frequency input.

LSI logic for phase-control rectifiers

Signals for controlling phase-controlled rectifier circuit are generated by combinatorial logic than can be implemented in large-scale integration (LSI). LSI circuit saves space, weight, and assembly time compared to previous controls that employ one-shot multivibrators, latches, and capacitors. LSI logic functions by sensing three phases of ac power source and by comparing actual currents with intended currents.

Ultrastable automatic frequency control

Center frequency of wideband AFC circuit drifts only hundredths of percent per day. Since circuit responds only to slow frequency drifts and modulation signal has high-pass characteristics, AFC does not interfere with normal FM operation. Stable oscillator, reset circuit, and pulse generator constitute time-averaging discriminator; digital counter in pulse generator replaces usual monostable multivibrator.

Sabourin, D. J.

Flashlamp Driver for Quasi-CW Laser Pumping

Circuit maintains constant high-current level through lamp while lighted and a low simmer current through lamp while not lighted. Lamp current is switched between these two modes by transistor; transistor is therefore called current-mode switch. Stable light pulses are emitted from flashlamp when monostable multivibrator goes high, in part because unsaturated transistor switch has negative feedback control that keeps lamp current constant.

Evaluation of crystal oscillators and frequency dividers for high temperature operation

Active and passive components of crystal oscillators and frequency dividers were tested to determine their performance at temperatures from 300 C to 350 C. The properties of GaAs JFETs were determined and their performance compared with that of silicon devices. Techniques for constructing breadboard circuits were assessed for operation in this temperature range. A Pierce oscillator and a multivibrator (Colorado crystal) oscillator were constructed and tested. Device failures are discussed.

Digital demodulator

A digital demodulator for converting pulse code modulated data from phase shift key (PSK) to non return to zero (NRZ) and to biphase data is described. The demodulator is composed of standard integrated logic circuits. The key to the demodulation function is a pair of cross coupled one shot multivibrators and which with a flip-flop produce the NRZ-L is all that is required, the circuitry is greatly simplified and the 2(v) times bit rate contraint can be removed from the carrier. A flip-flop, an OR gate, and AND gate and a binary counter generate the bit rate clock (BTCK) for the NRZ-L. The remainder of the circuitry is for converting the NRZ-L and BTCK into biphase data. The device was designed for use in the space shuttle bay environment measurements.
