The influence of lateral stability on disturbed motions of an airplane with special reference to the motions produced by gusts

Distributed lateral motions have been calculated for a hypothetical small airplane with various modifications of fin area and dihedral setting. Special combinations of disturbing factors to simulate gusts are considered and the influence of lateral stability on the motions is discussed. Fin area and wing dihedral were found to be of primary importance in side gusts. It was found that the rolling action of the wing with as much as 5 degrees dihedral was distinctly unfavorable, especially when the weathercock stability was small. It is pointed out that the greatest susceptibility to lateral disturbances lies in the inherent damping and coupling moments developed by the wing.

A Unified Approach to Motion Control of Motion Robots

This paper presents a simple on-line approach for motion control of mobile robots made up of a manipulator arm mounted on a mobile base. The proposed approach is equally applicable to nonholonomic mobile robots, such as rover-mounted manipulators and to holonomic mobile robots such as tracked robots or compound manipulators. The computational efficiency of the proposed control scheme makes it particularly suitable for real-time implementation.

Rigid-body motion extracted from total motion of a flexible body

Control system eliminates or reduces flexibility effects on the manual and automatic control of large flexible vehicles. It extracts rigid-body and flexible-body motion and adapts well when a flexible-body frequency coincides or nearly coincides with the control mode frequency.

Motion compensator for holographic motion picture camera

When reference beam strikes target it undergoes Doppler shift dependent upon target velocity. To compensate, object beam is first reflected from rotating cylinder that revolves in direction opposite to target but at same speed. When beam strikes target it is returned to original frequency and is in phase with reference beam. Alternatively this motion compensator may act on reference beam.

Relative motion of orbiting particles under the influence of perturbing forces. Volume 3: Construction of relative motion traces

Geometric traces can be simply constructed to illustrate the relative motions experienced by particles in a number of problem situations. These diagrams describe the displacements and hodographs which arise as a consequence of initial value inputs and selected disturbance (force) conditions. Due to the linearization which is imposed on the mathematical formulation there is a separation of the in-plane and out-of-plane coordinate solutions. The construction of in-plane traces is easier to represent and to visualize. The out-of-plane geometries are the more complicated cases and generally need some added specializations in order to acquire figures which have some degree of symmetry and simplicity.

Human comfort response to random motions with a dominant transverse motion

Subjective ride comfort response ratings were measured on the Langley Visual Motion Simulator with transverse acceleration inputs with various power spectra shapes and magnitudes. The results show only little influence of spectra shape on comfort response. The effects of magnitude on comfort response indicate the applicability of psychophysical precepts for comfort modeling.

New formulation of de Sitter's theory of motion for Jupiter I-IV. I - Equations of motion and the disturbing function

Elliptic orbits are substituted for circular orbits in the first approximation, in an analysis of the common retrograde motion of Jupiter's satellites. A modification of the de Sitter theory, made possible by extended observations of the satellites, is presented with attention to that aspect of the theory which eliminates small divisors at all stages of the solution. The convergence problem is circumvented by use of Poincare's canonical relative coordinates. In addition, modified Delaunay variables and their associated Poincare variables are applied to the disturbing function, which is expanded by means of generalized Newcomb operators.

Collisional redistribution of radiation. II - The effects of degeneracy on the equations of motion for the density matrix. III - The equation of motion for the correlation function and the scattered spectrum

The effect of correlations between an absorber atom and perturbers in the binary-collision approximation are applied to degenerate atomic systems. A generalized absorption profile which specifies the final state of the atom after an absorption event is related to the total intensities of Rayleigh scattering and fluorescence from the atom. It is suggested that additional dynamical information to that obtainable from ordinary absorption experiments is required in order to describe redistributed atomic radiation. The scattering of monochromatic radiation by a degenerate atom is computed in a binary-collision approximation; an equation of motion is derived for the correlation function which is valid outside the quantum-regression regime. Solutions are given for the weak-field conditions in terms of generalized absorption and emission profiles that depend on the indices of the atomic multipoles.
