A General Tool for Evaluating High-Contrast Coronagraphic Telescope Performance Error Budgets

This paper describes a general purpose Coronagraph Performance Error Budget (CPEB) tool that we have developed under the NASA Exoplanet Exploration Program. The CPEB automates many of the key steps required to evaluate the scattered starlight contrast in the dark hole of a space-based coronagraph. It operates in 3 steps: first, a CodeV or Zemax prescription is converted into a MACOS optical prescription. Second, a Matlab program calls ray-trace code that generates linear beam-walk and aberration sensitivity matrices for motions of the optical elements and line-of-sight pointing, with and without controlled coarse and fine-steering mirrors. Third, the sensitivity matrices are imported by macros into Excel 2007 where the error budget is created. Once created, the user specifies the quality of each optic from a predefined set of PSDs. The spreadsheet creates a nominal set of thermal and jitter motions and combines them with the sensitivity matrices to generate an error budget for the system. The user can easily modify the motion allocations to perform trade studies.

Normalized Point Source Sensitivity for Off-Axis Optical Performance Evaluation of the Thirty Meter Telescope

The Normalized Point Source Sensitivity (PSSN) has previously been defined and analyzed as an On-Axis seeing-limited telescope performance metric. In this paper, we expand the scope of the PSSN definition to include Off-Axis field of view (FoV) points and apply this generalized metric for performance evaluation of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). We first propose various possible choices for the PSSN definition and select one as our baseline. We show that our baseline metric has useful properties including the multiplicative feature even when considering Off-Axis FoV points, which has proven to be useful for optimizing the telescope error budget. Various TMT optical errors are considered for the performance evaluation including segment alignment and phasing, segment surface figures, temperature, and gravity, whose On-Axis PSSN values have previously been published by our group.

Wide-band Planar Dipole Antennas for Earth and Planetary Science Applications

Dipole antennas are well known and are used for a variety of applications in many different shapes and forms. Wide-band planar dipole antennas, in particular, have been developed, designed and implemented in the past and have shown promising RF performance. In this paper, we describe a particular style of a wide-band planar dipole antenna that is being developed over a wide range of frequencies for a variety of scientific applications on Earth, the Moon and beyond. Aside from the appealing RF performance, this antenna element also lends itself to being easily folded and stowed on a small satellite and deployed once in space, making it very useful in applications where large apertures or low frequency/long wavelength antennas need to be deployed from a small platform (compared to the wavelength).
