Origin of the Large Bandgap Bowing in Highly Mismatched Semiconductor Alloys

We use a combination of optical and soft x-ray fluorescence techniques to investigate the composition dependence of the band edge energies in ZnSe(1-x)Te(x) and ZnS(1-x)Te(x) alloys. The results reveal entirely different origins of the large bandgap bowing for alloys with small and large Te content. On the Te-rich side, the reduction of the bandgap is well explained by the band anticrossing interaction between the Se or S localized states and the ZnTe conduction band states. On the Se or S-rich side, an interaction between the localized Te states and the degenerate GAMMA valence bands of ZnSe or ZnS is responsible for the bandgap reduction and the rapid increase of the spin-orbit splitting with increasing Te concentration. Results of soft x-ray fluorescence experiments provide direct evidence for the valence band anticrossing interaction. The bandgap bowing over the entire composition range is accounted for by a linear interpolation between the conduction band anticrossing and valence band anticrossing models.

Dual density wave state in liquid Ga

Liquid Ga is considered to be in a mixed state of metallic and covalent local states, and shows complex behavior, similar to those of other polyvalent Group III–V elements on the Periodic Table, such as Si, Ge, Sn, and Bi. We studied liquid Ga by inelastic neutron scattering to obtain the pair-distribution function. We found that the structure of liquid Ga has the medium-range order characterized by two overlapping density waves (DWs), one originating from ionic repulsion and the other due to electronic driving force to create charge DWs. We suggest that the dual DW state is naturally elucidated by the DW theory, rather than the widely used Ornstein–Zernike theory.

Solutions Network Formulation Report. Landsat Data Continuity Mission Simulated Data Products for Bureau of Land Management and Environmental Protection Agency Abandoned Mine Lands Decision Support

Presently, the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has identified a multitude of abandoned mine sites in primarily Western states for cleanup. These sites are prioritized and appropriate cleanup has been called in to reclaim the sites. The task is great in needing considerable amounts of agency resources. For instance, in Colorado alone there exists an estimated 23,000 abandoned mines. The problem is not limited to Colorado or to the United States. Cooperation for reclamation is sought at local, state, and federal agency level to aid in identification, inventory, and cleanup efforts. Dangers posed by abandoned mines are recognized widely and will tend to increase with time because some of these areas are increasingly used for recreation and, in some cases, have been or are in the process of development. In some cases, mines are often vandalized once they are closed. The perpetrators leave them open, so others can then access the mines without realizing the danger posed. Abandoned mine workings often fill with water or oxygen-deficient air and dangerous gases following mining. If the workings are accidentally entered into, water or bad air can prove fatal to those underground. Moreover, mine residue drainage negatively impacts the local watershed ecology. Some of the major hazards that might be monitored by higher-resolution satellites include acid mine drainage, clogged streams, impoundments, slides, piles, embankments, hazardous equipment or facilities, surface burning, smoke from underground fires, and mine openings.

Control of nonlinear systems with applications to constrained robots and spacecraft attitude stabilization

This thesis is organized in two parts. In Part 1, control systems described by a class of nonlinear differential and algebraic equations are introduced. A procedure for local stabilization based on a local state realization is developed. An alternative approach to local stabilization is developed based on a classical linearization of the nonlinear differential-algebraic equations. A theoretical framework is established for solving a tracking problem associated with the differential-algebraic system. First, a simple procedure is developed for the design of a feedback control law which ensures, at least locally, that the tracking error in the closed loop system lies within any given bound if the reference inputs are sufficiently slowly varying. Next, by imposing additional assumptions, a procedure is developed for the design of a feedback control law which ensures that the tracking error in the closed loop system approaches zero exponentially for reference inputs which are not necessarily slowly varying. The control design methodologies are used for simultaneous force and position control in constrained robot systems. The differential-algebraic equations are shown to characterize the slow dynamics of a certain nonlinear control system in nonstandard singularly perturbed form. In Part 2, the attitude stabilization (reorientation) of a rigid spacecraft using only two control torques is considered. First, the case of momentum wheel actuators is considered. The complete spacecraft dynamics are not controllable. However, the spacecraft dynamics are small time locally controllable in a reduced sense. The reduced spacecraft dynamics cannot be asymptotically stabilized using continuous feedback, but a discontinuous feedback control strategy is constructed. Next, the case of gas jet actuators is considered. If the uncontrolled principal axis is not an axis of symmetry, the complete spacecraft dynamics are small time locally controllable. However, the spacecraft attitude cannot be asymptotically stabilized using continuous feedback, but a discontinuous stabilizing feedback control strategy is constructed. If the uncontrolled principal axis is an axis of symmetry, the complete spacecraft dynamics cannot be stabilized. However, the spacecraft dynamics are small time locally controllable in a reduced sense. The reduced spacecraft dynamics cannot be asymptotically stabilized using continuous feedback, but again a discontinuous feedback control strategy is constructed.

THz Local Oscillator Technology

The last decade has seen a number of technological advancements that have now made it possible to implement fully solid state local oscillator chains up to 2 THz. These chains are composed of cascaded planar multiplier stages that are pumped with W-band high power sources. The high power W-band sources are achieved by power combining MMIC amplifiers and can provide in access of 150 mW with about 10% bandwidth. Planar diode technology has also enabled novel circuit topologies that can take advantage of the high input power and demonstrate significant efficiencies well into the THz range. Cascaded chains to 1.9 THz have now been demonstrated with enough output power to successfully pump hot-electron bolometer mixers in this frequency range. An overview of the current State-of-the-Art of the local oscillator technology will be presented along with highlighting future trends and challenges.

Atomic Manipulation of Single Erbium on GaAs(110): From Adatom Motion to Creation and Control of Bistable Substitutions

We demonstrate atomic-scale control over the position and configuration of single erbium (Er) atoms at the GaAs(110) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). By applying voltage pulses from the STM tip, we drive Er adatoms to move sequentially among three distinct adsorption sites and controllably substitute into Ga lattice sites. The resulting substitutional Er atoms exhibit two isoelectronic configurations that differ by less than one angstrom in lateral position and can be reversibly switched by additional voltage pulses. Differential conductance spectroscopy shows differences in the unoccupied local electronic states for the two substitutional configurations, and an absence of mid-gap states. Preliminary density functional theory (DFT) calculations support these findings, identifying the most stable adsorption and substitutional sites, their relative binding energies, charge states, and local density of states (LDOS) characteristics. Together, the experimental and theoretical results establish a method for precise, reversible manipulation of rare-earth dopants at semiconductor surfaces, opening a pathway to engineer atomic-scale quantum and optoelectronic functionalities.

Frequency multipliers for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths

All-solid-state local oscillators in the terahertz frequency range are especially needed for space-borne radio astronomy and remote sensing of the atmosphere. Because solid-state oscillators cannot yet produce the necessary local oscillator power at submillimeter wavelengths, frequency multipliers are needed. So far, submillimeter-wave frequency multipliers are mainly based on a whisker-contacted Schottky diode as the nonlinear element. This paper discusses the multiplier theory and tools for analysis and design of millimeter- and submillimeter-wave multipliers. Experimental work is reviewed. The Schottky diode model at submillimeter frequencies, use of Schottky multiplier chains versus direct higher-order multipliers, and the effect of cooling on Schottky diode multipliers are discussed. Alternative diodes such as the high electron mobility varactor, the barrier-intrinsic n(+) diode, the barrier-n-n(+) diode, the quantum well diode, and the single barrier varactor are discussed, with attention also given to their potential as submillimeter frequency multipliers.

Decentralized control of large flexible structures by joint decoupling

A decentralized control design method is presented for large complex flexible structures by using the idea of joint decoupling. The derivation is based on a coupled substructure state-space model, which is obtained from enforcing conditions of interface compatibility and equilibrium to the substructure state-space models. It is shown that by restricting the control law to be localized state feedback and by setting the joint actuator input commands to decouple joint 'degrees of freedom' (dof) from interior dof, the global structure control design problem can be decomposed into several substructure control design problems. The substructure control gains and substructure observers are designed based on modified substructure state-space models. The controllers produced by the proposed method can operate successfully at the individual substructure level as well as at the global structure level. Therefore, not only control design but also control implementation is decentralized. Stability and performance requirement of the closed-loop system can be achieved by using any existing state feedback control design method. A two-component mass-spring damper system and a three-truss structure are used as examples to demonstrate the proposed method.

The 60 GHz radiometric local vertical sensor experiment

The experiment concept involves the use of millimeter wave radiation the atmospheric oxygen to provide vertical sensing information to a satellite-borne radiometer. The radiance profile studies require the calculation of ray brightness temperature as a function of tangential altitude and atmosphere model, and the computer program developed for this purpose is discussed. Detailed calculations have been made for a total of 12 atmosphere models, including some showing severe warning conditions. The experiment system analysis investigates the effect of various design choices on system behavior. Calculated temperature profiles are presented for a wide variety of frequencies, bandwidths, and atmosphere models. System performance is determined by the convolution of the brightness temperature and an assumed antenna pattern. A compensation scheme to account for different plateau temperatures is developed and demonstrated. The millimeter wave components developed for the local vertical sensor are discussed, with emphasis on the antenna, low noise mixer, and solid state local oscillator. It was concluded that a viable sensing technique exists, useful over a wide range of altitude with an accuracy generally on the order of 0.01 degree or better.
