Small High Endurance Aircraft Technology (sHEAT) - Application of Solid-State Hydrogen Storage to Extend Flight Time of sUAS

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) proposed a study to The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) to investigate the possibility of extending the flight time of small-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) using aluminum hydride (AlH 3 or alane) to power a hydrogen fuel cell. Alane is a solid-state hydrogen storage material with greater volumetric energy density than compressed hydrogen and much greater energy density than lithium batteries. UAVs typically use lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries for flight, but lithium batteries have not provided a substantial increase in flight time or range since their wide acceptance in the unmanned aircraft market. Several DHS agencies would benefit greatly from extended flight times and ranges for UAS platforms, so experimenting with new types of power sources could provide significant improvement in these important areas of research for DHS S&T.

Impacts of Lanthanum Impurities on Nickel-Rich Cathode Materials

The widespread use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has led to environmental concerns and exacerbated the scarcity of essential minerals, underscoring the urgent need for effective recycling strategies. Among various recycling methods, the hydrometallurgical process is distinguished by its energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries are a significant source of nickel sulfate (NiSO 4 ) for hydrometallurgical recycling due to their substantial nickel content. A significant challenge arises from the effective separation of lanthanum (La), which results in at least 20 ppm of La being present in the recycled NiSO 4 . This study explores a critical aspect of the recycling process: the impact of La 3+ impurities, introduced through recycled NiSO 4 , on the performance of the synthesized nickel-rich cathode materials. We conducted a thorough investigation into how La 3+ influences morphology and structural integrity during both the synthesis of precursors and the production of cathode materials. Our findings indicate that La 3+ impurities do not adversely affect the morphology or structural integrity of the cathode precursors relative to virgin materials. However, higher concentrations of La 3+ reduce the discharge capacity with enhanced cycle stability by minimizing cation mixing between lithium (Li + ) and nickel (Ni 2+ ) ions within the cathode. Furthermore, this stability is crucial for extending battery life. Therefore, controlling the concentration of La 3+ impurities is essential for optimizing the electrochemical performance of recycled cathode materials.

Two-Dimensional Siloxene Nanosheets: Understanding the Effect of Heat Treatment on the Surface Chemistry and Resulting Electrochemistry in Lithium-Based Batteries

Two-dimensional (2D) silicon materials are conceptually appealing as negative electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries due to their layered morphology, which can accommodate (de)lithiation-induced volume changes. Herein, heat treatment of 2D Siloxene materials was used to modify the surface functional groups to determine the impact on the electrochemical behavior. Spectroscopic characterization of the heat-treated nanosheets confirmed the loss of oxygenated and hydride surface functional groups with an increased annealing temperature. Formation and disproportionation of the amorphous suboxides with increasing heat treatment were affirmed with lab and synchrotron-based measurements. A reduced irreversible capacity was observed for Siloxene with a higher temperature heat treatment consistent with the formation of a more favorable surface electrolyte interphase (SEI). A Siloxene-400||NMC622 full cell (prepared with 400 °C-annealed Siloxene (Siloxene-400) and LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC622)) showed significantly enhanced capacity and rate capability compared to a nano Si||NMC622 cell. Finally, these results illustrate the ability of thermal annealing to modify the surface functional groups of Siloxene and highlight the favorable impact of the appropriate surface functionality on the electrochemistry of Siloxene in lithium cells.

Spectroscopic Insight on Neodymium Solvation in Lithium Borohydride-Supported Electrolyte

Borohydride-based electrolytes have recently emerged as promising media for the electrodeposition of electropositive metals, including rare earth (RE) elements. While the presence of supporting alkali metal cations and RE counteranions provides essential electrochemical conductivity for achieving fast metal electrodeposition, interactions between the host ligand and solvated neodymium (Nd) complexes remain unclear. This study provides insights into the coordination structure of a concentrated and directly solvated Nd salt in a lithium borohydride-supported electrolyte. Our spectroscopic results indicate that the RE coordination environment is significantly influenced by the solvation mechanism, which can vary between metathesis and complexation pathways, primarily dictated by stoichiometric factors. Under dilute conditions, nearly complete metathesis of anions leads to a high coordination number for the host ligand (borohydride), consistent with the previously reported solvated Nd speciation in chlorine-free electrolytes. In contrast, concentrated dissolution of the Nd salt in the supported electrolyte is dominated by a complexation pathway featuring a Li-ion-paired complex with a low coordination number of the host ligand. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the observed blue shift in the borohydride vibration was the result of an increase in electron density drawn into the terminal B–H interbond region from the hydride as the coordination changed from Li to Nd. In conjunction with DFT results, vibrational analyses allowed correlation of the experimental shifts associated with changes in Nd ligation and coordination spheres, further consolidating the prevalence of highly chloride-coordinated species under concentrated conditions. In conclusion, the outcomes of this work illuminate the distinctive and heterogeneous coordination structures that the electroactive RE species can adopt at high concentrations in lithium borohydride-supported electrolytes, as a key step to comprehend the reported metal electrodeposition performance in these media.

Theoretical search for possible Li–Ni–B crystal structures using an adaptive genetic algorithm

The structural diversity of rare-earth and transition metal borides indicates that alkali-transition metal borides (A-T-B) show tremendous promise in exhibiting a variety of crystal structures with different dimensionalities of T-B frameworks. On the other hand, the A-T-B ternary systems are severely underexplored because of the synthetic challenges associated with their preparation. Accurate and efficient computational predictions of low-energy stable and metastable phases can identify the optimal compositions of the hypothetical compounds in the A-T-B systems to guide the synthesis. As such, in this work, we have computationally discovered several new phases in the Li–Ni–B ternary system. The newly discovered LiNiB, Li 2 Ni 3 B, and Li 2 NiB phases expand the existing theoretical database, and the convex-hull surface of Li–Ni–B has been re-constructed. The lowest energy structure of the LiNiB compound has been found by an adaptive genetic algorithm with layered motif, which matches with the experimentally determined structure. According to our electrochemical calculations, LiNiB and another predicted layered Li 2 NiB compounds have great potential as anode materials for lithium batteries. The Li 2 Ni 3 B compound with the space group P4 3 32 was predicted to crystallize in a cubic structure composed of distorted octahedral units of BNi 6 , which is isostructural to two noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li 2 Pd 3 B and Li 2 Pt 3 B. While we were unable to experimentally confirm the Li 2 Ni 3 B compound utilizing the hydride synthetic route, attempts to synthesize this compound by alternate methods remain highly desirable, considering its potential superconducting properties.

SiO 2 Is Wasted Space in Single-Nanometer-Scale Silicon Nanoparticle-Based Composite Anodes for Li-Ion Electrochemical Energy Storage

The electrode processing conditions of silicon-based composite anodes play a pivotal role in the resulting interfacial chemical speciation and, thus, the electrochemical cycling behavior of the electrode. Systematically investigating how small chemical changes to the surface of the silicon nanoparticle (NP) affect larger, electrode-level properties is a strategy that will inform design principles to maximize electrode energy density and extend electrode lifetime. Here, we incorporate silicon nanoparticles (NPs) with an average diameter of 5.5 nm synthesized from the gas phase through a nonthermal plasma method into composite anode half-cell coin cells. We perform chemistry to functionalize the native hydride-terminated silicon NP surface with N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) to improve slurry properties and reduce the silicon reactivity prior to composite electrode fabrication. We construct composite electrodes from these silicon NPs and observe an 86% capacity retention over 100 cycles at a rate of C/5, with an initial silicon specific capacity of 2600 mAh/g. We expose the same Si NPs to water that completely oxidizes these small-diameter NPs to SiO 2 and find that the SiO 2 NPs in the same electrode configuration exhibit no obvious lithium alloying capacity in the electrochemical potential range of lithium silicide alloy formation. As this result stands in contrast to existing literature, we provide a discussion on the origin of the discrepancies.
