The Sylvester Graphical Lasso (SyGlasso)

This paper introduces the Sylvester graphical lasso (SyGlasso) that captures multiway dependencies present in tensor-valued data. The model is based on the Sylvester equation that defines a generative model. The proposed model complements the tensor graphical lasso that imposes a Kronecker sum model for the inverse covariance matrix by providing an alternative Kronecker sum model that is generative and interpretable. A nodewise regression approach is adopted for estimating the conditional independence relationships among variables. The statistical convergence of the method is established, and empirical studies are provided to demonstrate the recovery of meaningful conditional dependency graphs. Here we apply the SyGlasso to an electroencephalography (EEG) study to compare the brain connectivity of alcoholic and nonalcoholic subjects. Here, we demonstrate that our model can simultaneously estimate both the brain connectivity and its temporal dependencies.

First Assessment of Cloud‐Land Coupling in LASSO Large‐Eddy Simulations

Abstract To enhance our understanding of cloud simulations over land, this study provides the first assessment of coupling between cloud and land surface in the Large‐Eddy Simulation (LES) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Symbiotic Simulation and Observation (LASSO) activity for the shallow convection scenario. The analysis of observation data reveals a diurnal cycle of cloud‐land coupling, which co‐varies with surface fluxes. However, coupled (or decoupled) cumulus clouds are inadequately simulated, manifesting as a too‐high (or low) occurrence frequency during the afternoon. This discrepancy is mirrored by the overestimated cloud liquid water path and cloud‐top height. These overestimations are linked to the overpredicted boundary‐layer development and the easier trigger of shallow convection misrepresented in LES runs. Our study underscores the need to improve the representations of boundary‐layer processes and cloud‐land interactions within LES to better simulate shallow clouds in the future.

GOES-16 Data for LASSO-CACTI Overview Paper

GOES-16 L1b satellite radiances have been obtained for the LASSO-CACTI case dates. Specifically, the period in the ARM subset is for select days in the period October 26, 2018 through March 15, 2019. These files were downloaded from Amazon Web Services using the GOES-2-Go library, https://blaylockbk.github.io/goes2go/_build/html/.

A phase transition for finding needles in nonlinear haystacks with LASSO artificial neural networks

To fit sparse linear associations, a LASSO sparsity inducing penalty with a single hyperparameter provably allows to recover the important features (needles) with high probability in certain regimes even if the sample size is smaller than the dimension of the input vector (haystack). More recently learners known as artificial neural networks (ANN) have shown great successes in many machine learning tasks, in particular fitting nonlinear associations. Small learning rate, stochastic gradient descent algorithm and large training set help to cope with the explosion in the number of parameters present in deep neural networks. Yet few ANN learners have been developed and studied to find needles in nonlinear haystacks. Driven by a single hyperparameter, our ANN learner, like for sparse linear associations, exhibits a phase transition in the probability of retrieving the needles, which we do not observe with other ANN learners. To select our penalty parameter, we generalize the universal threshold of Donoho and Johnstone (Biometrika 81(3):425–455, 1994) which is a better rule than the conservative (too many false detections) and expensive cross-validation. In the spirit of simulated annealing, we propose a warm-start sparsity inducing algorithm to solve the high-dimensional, non-convex and non-differentiable optimization problem. We perform simulated and real data Monte Carlo experiments to quantify the effectiveness of our approach.

Estimating Sparse Direct Effects in Multivariate Regression With the Spike-and-Slab LASSO

The multivariate regression interpretation of the Gaussian chain graph model simultaneously parametrizes (i) the direct effects of p predictors on q outcomes and (ii) the residual partial covariances between pairs of outcomes. We introduce a new method for fitting sparse versions of these models with spike-and-slab LASSO (SSL) priors. We develop an Expectation Conditional Maximization algorithm to obtain sparse estimates of the p × q matrix of direct effects and the q × q residual precision matrix. Our algorithm iteratively solves a sequence of penalized maximum likelihood problems with self-adaptive penalties that gradually filter out negligible regression coefficients and partial covariances. Because it adaptively penalizes individual model parameters, our method is seen to outperform fixed-penalty competitors on simulated data. We establish the posterior contraction rate for our model, buttressing our method’s excellent empirical performance with strong theoretical guarantees. Using our method, we estimated the direct effects of diet and residence type on the composition of the gut microbiome of elderly adults.

The LASSO experiment

An international coordinated experimental assessment of a system which promises to provide a synchronization of clocks bound to time and frequency standard laboratories, with an accuracy of one nanosecond using existing or near ground-based laser stations via a geostationary satellite (SIRIO-2) is detailed. The system performance and the technical details concerning the on-board equiment, the ground segment, and the operational configuration are discussed. Finally, the future prospects of the LASSO experiment and possible implementations are examined together.

ERA5-Land Data for LASSO-CACTI Overview Paper

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) generated a soil reanalysis dataset for the land component of the fifth generation of European ReAnalysis (ERA5), referred to as ERA5-Land. This is a model-generated dataset, with the original version available for the period 1950 to present. The version archived in this DOE ARM product is a subset of the data is for the period of the CACTI field campaign plus several preceding months, specifically from August 1, 2018 through March 22, 2019 with hourly intervals. The ARM copy is also a sub-region of the original global product; the ARM copy is for -60 to -5 °N by -105 to -30 °W. Only variables necessary to drive the WRF-Hydro model are included, which are the 2-m temperature and specific humidity, 10-m wind components, surface pressure, rain rate, and downward surface short and longwave radiation. These data have been obtained from the Copernicus Data Store.
