Light new physics in B → K ( * ) ν ν ¯ ?

The study of the rare decays B → K ( * ) ν ν ¯ offers a window into the dynamics operating at the electroweak scale, allowing studies of the Standard Model and searches for heavy new physics. However, the analysis of these decays is also potentially sensitive to the on shell production of new light bosons X through the process B → K ( * ) X . In particular, Belle II has recently measured B + → K + ν ν ¯ , finding a 2.8 σ excess under the assumption of heavy new physics. Since this excess is rather localized in the kaon energy, a fit that includes the decay mode B + → K + X to the kinematic distributions prefers m X ≈ 2 GeV with branching fraction Br [ B → K X ] = ( 8.8 ± 2.5 ) × 10 − 6 and a significance of ≈ 3.6 σ . However, no excess was found in the measurements of B → K ( * ) ν ν ¯ , and a global analysis of the Belle II and data leads to Br [ B → K X ] = ( 5.1 ± 2.1 ) × 10 − 6 with a reduced significance of ≈ 2.4 σ . We then study various simplified dark-flavored models and present a possible UV completion based on a gauged B 3 − L 3 symmetry, highlighting the discovery potential of dedicated searches for B → K ( * ) X at Belle II. Electroweak box diagrams on the lattice for pion and neutron decay

CKM matrix is unitary by construction in the standard model(SM). The recent analyses on the first row of CKM matrix show ≈3σ tension with unitarity. Nonperturbative calculations of the radiative corrections can reduce the theory uncertainty in CKM matrix elements. Here we compute the electroweak box contribution to the pion and kaon β decays using seven Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 HISQ-Clover lattice with various pion mass and lattice spacing. The continuum and chiral limit is taken using the leading dependence on M π and a, where M π extrapolation is taken to the physical pion mass and SU(3) symmetric mass for pion and kaon box contribution, respectively. Our results are $\square^{VA}_{γW}|_{π}$ = 2.820(28) × 10 –3 and $\square^{VA}_{γW}|_{K}$ = 2.384(17) × 10 –3 .

Electromagnetic production of kaons on the nucleon

Studies of the electromagnetic production of strange quarks started in the 1950s as something of a curiosity that puzzled experimentalists and theorists alike. Eventually, a nascent understanding of these processes began to take shape through the first pioneering experiments dedicated to explore photo- and electroproduction that were carried out in the period from the 1950s to the 1980s. As the datasets increased, concomitant advances in theoretical models were realized. However, these initial studies also made clear that more precise data was essential to continue to move forward. A paradigm shift occurred in the 1990s with the development of second-generation facilities at ELSA, MAMI, SPring-8, and JLab. High-intensity, high duty-factor accelerators, coupled with novel detector systems and advances in computing and readout electronics, brought nuclear physics experiments forward by orders of magnitude in counting statistics compared to the first-generation efforts. This was an utter boon to strangeness physics investigations, and to date, more than 50 dedicated experiments in kaon photo- and electroproduction have been completed at facilities around the world, leading to a host of experimental observables that have enabled significant advances in the exploration of strongly interacting systems that decay via $s\bar{s}$ quark pair creation. These data have proven to be an essential complementary pathway to study the spectrum and structure of the excited states of the nucleon, and the search for missing and exotic baryon configurations. As well, investigations in these channels are requisite for exploring hypernuclear production as a probe of the $YN$ interaction and for studies of the electromagnetic form factors of strange mesons. This review was designed to provide the first-ever in-depth overview of both the experimental and theoretical progress in the field of the electromagnetic production of strangeness. This work looks back over 70 years of past developments, discusses ongoing work and near-term plans, and details future possibilities being considered for third-generation facilities. Extensive lists of the available datasets and theoretical models are provided, together with a comprehensive supporting bibliography of the field. Throughout this work, the primary impacts of these explorations are highlighted, along with connections to a wide range of related phenomenological applications. An important goal of this review is to provide a complete, (reasonably) self-contained guide into this field prepared at a level that is relevant for both new and seasoned scientists, whether experimentalists, phenomenologists, or theorists, to better understand what has been accomplished by so many dedicated folks-each building on what has come before-and to appreciate the exciting future potential for continued studies in this area.

B → K ν ν ¯ , MiniBooNE and muon g − 2 anomalies from a dark sector

Belle II has reported the first evidence for B + → K + ν ν ¯ with a branching ratio 2.7 σ higher than the standard model expectation. We explain this and the MiniBooNE and muon anomalous magnetic moment anomalies in a model with a dark scalar that couples to a slightly heavier sterile Dirac neutrino and that communicates with the visible sector via a Higgs portal. We make predictions for rare kaon and other B meson decays. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quark and Gluon Momentum Fractions in the Pion and in the Kaon

We present the full decomposition of the momentum fraction carried by quarks and gluons in the pion and the kaon. We employ three gauge ensembles generated with N f = 2 + 1 + 1 Wilson twisted-mass clover-improved fermions at the physical quark masses. For both mesons we perform a continuum extrapolation directly at the physical pion mass, which allows us to determine for the first time the momentum decomposition at the physical point. We find that the total momentum fraction carried by quarks is 0.575(79) and 0.683(50) and by gluons 0.402(53) and 0.422(67) in the pion and in the kaon, respectively, in the MS ¯ scheme and at the renormalization scale of 2 GeV. Having computed both the quark and gluon contributions in the continuum limit, we find that the momentum sum is 0.984(89) for the pion and 1.13(11) for the kaon, verifying the momentum sum rule. Kaonic Hanbury-Brown–Twiss radii at 200 GeV and 5.02 TeV

Here, we use 3 + 1 dimensional quasiparticle anisotropic hydrodynamics (aHydroQP) to make predictions for kaon Hanbury-Brown–Twiss (HBT) radii in 200 GeV and 5.02 TeV heavy-ion collisions. Using previously determined aHydroQP parameters, we compute kaonic HBT radii and their ratios as a function of the mean transverse momentum of the pair k T . We first consider Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV, finding good agreement between aHydroQP predictions and experimental data up to k T ≈ 0.8 GeV. We then present predictions for kaonic HBT radii and their ratios in 5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions. Our aHydroQP predictions do not exhibit a clear k T scaling of the pion and kaon source radii, however, an approximate transverse mass m T scaling is observed, particularly at 200 GeV.

Selection of charged-current neutrino-induced $K^+$ production interactions in MicroBooNE

MicroBooNE is an 85-ton active mass liquid-argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detector exposed to the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab. MicroBooNE’s physics goals is the precision measurement of neutrino interactions on argon in the 1 GeV energy regime. The study of neutrino interactions producing a $K^+$ in the final-state can improve the background estimates for future proton-decay experiments looking for the $p → K^+$$_ν$ channel on argon such as DUNE. In this document we present a simulation study for a selection of events with a $K^+$ that is produced in a charged-current neutrino interaction and decays into a $µ^+$ and a $ν_µ$ in the MicroBooNE detector. It will focus on how we use the particle identification techniques developed by MicroBooNE to achieve a sample with a 7% efficiency and 66.7% purity. This is the first step toward a charged-current kaon production cross section measurement in argon.

K S 0 K S 0 and K S 0 K± femtoscopy in pp collisions at s = 5.02 and 13 TeV

The ALICE collaboration has studied neutral kaon pair correlations and neutral kaon - charged kaon correlations generated from 5.02, 7 and 13 TeV proton-proton collisions produced by the CERN Large Hadron Collider. From analyzing this data, we have show a strong suggestion that the a 0 (980) particle generated in these collisions, which decays into these kaon pairs, is a four-quark particle, instead of the usual two and three-quark particles which are normally seen.

First measurement of the total inelastic cross section of positively charged kaons on argon at energies between 5.0 and 7.5 GeV

ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/𝑐 beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380 ± 26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/𝑐 setting and 379 ± 35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/𝑐 setting.

QCD axion dark matter from a late time phase transition

We investigate the possibility that the Peccei-Quinn phase transition occurs at a temperature far below the symmetry breaking scale. Low phase transition temperatures are typical in supersymmetric theories, where symmetry breaking fields have small masses. We find that QCD axions are abundantly produced just after the phase transition. The observed dark matter abundance is reproduced even if the decay constant is much lower than 10 11 GeV. The produced axions tend to be warm. For some range of the decay constant, the effect of the predicted warmness on structure formation can be confirmed by future observations of 21 cm lines. A portion of parameter space requires a mixing between the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking field and the Standard Model Higgs, and predicts an observable rate of rare Kaon decays.

A search for the K + → μ - νe + e + decay

A search for the K + → μ - νe + e + decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016--2018. An upper limit of 8.1×10 -11 is obtained for the decay branching fraction at 90% CL, improving by a factor of 250 over the previous search.

Meas. K+ -Ar Total Inelastic Cross Section at ProtoDUNE-SP

ProtoDUNE-SP is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber that took hadron test beam data in 2018. The test beam included positively charged kaons with test beam momenta of 6 GeV/c and 7 GeV/c, providing a sample to study kaons to benefit future DUNE proton decay and neutrino interaction studies with kaons in the final state. The total inelastic cross section of a positively charged kaon was measured at these test beam settings using the LArIAT thin-slice method of dividing the wires of the time projection chamber into target slices for calculating the cross section, which leverages the monolithic quality of liquid argon detectors. A Bayesian-like unfolding method using RooUnfold was applied to both the incident and interacting slice distributions to measure the cross sections at both test beam momenta. The talk will discuss the method of unfolding, optimization studies for unfolding, and applying systematic uncertainties using a LArIAT-style hadronic cross section using unfolding to extract a kaon total inelastic cross section.

Searching for axions with kaon decay at rest

We describe a novel search strategy for axions (or hadronically coupled axionlike particles) in the mass range of m a ≲350 MeV. The search relies on kaon decay at rest, which produces a monoenergetic signal in a large volume detector (e.g., a tank of liquid scintillator) from axion decays a → γγ or a → e + ⁢e – . The decay modes K + → π + ⁢a and a → γγ are induced by the axion’s coupling to gluons, which is generic to any model which addresses the strong CP problem. We recast a recent search from MicroBooNE for e +⁢ e – pairs and study prospects at JSNS 2 and other near-term facilities. We find that JSNS 2 will have world-leading sensitivity to hadronically coupled axions in the mass range of 40 MeV ≲ m a ≲ 350 MeV.

Electroweak interactions in Nucleons and Nuclei

The neutrino oscillation experiments are being performed using detectors having moderate to heavy nuclear targets like $^{12}{C}$, $^{16}{O}$, $^{40}{Ar}$, $^{56}{Fe}$, $^{208}{Pb}$, etc. to get a reasonably good number of events. Many present-day neutrino experiments are taking data in the few GeV (1 $\leq$ E$_{\nu}$ $\leq$ 10 GeV) energy region of neutrinos and antineutrinos to which some of the neutrino oscillation parameters are sensitive and required to understand CP violation in the lepton sector. This is the energy region which is most intriguing as it receives the contribution from the Quasielastic Scattering~(QE), Inelastic Scattering(IE), Shallow Inelastic Scattering (SIS) and the Deep Inelastic Scattering~(DIS) processes. This thesis details three different studies: \begin{itemize} \item First, a DIS study was performed with the MINERvA experiment at the Fermilab. MINERvA is a dedicated neutrino and antineutrino cross-section measurement experiment and uses (anti)neutrino beams in the two energy runs {\it viz.} the low energy run~(the peak of which lies $\sim$ 3 GeV) and the medium energy run(the peak lies at $\sim$ 6 GeV). The MINERvA experiment is using several nuclear targets like $^{4}$He, $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, $^{56}$Fe and $^{208}$Pb and the aim is to perform EMC~(European Muon Collaboration experiment using charged lepton beam on several nuclear targets) kind of measurements to understand the nuclear medium effects in both the neutrino and antineutrino modes in the wide region of Bjorken scaling variable $x$, and the four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$, covering the quasielastic, inelastic, and the deep inelastic scattering regions. In the medium energy region, it is expected that more than 30\% of the events would arise due to DIS processes. \item Second part of the thesis includes the analysis of the proposed India-based Neutrino Observatory(INO) atmospheric neutrino experiment. This work is dedicated to studying atmospheric neutrino and ant ineutrino oscillation parameters in the INO experiment. We present the ICAL sensitivity to confirm a non-zero value of the difference in atmospheric mass squared of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos i.e. ($|\Delta m^{2}_{32}|$-$|\Delta\overline{m^{2}}_{32}|$). \item Third, the theoretical work that was performed at the Aligarh Muslim University. This work has been performed keeping in mind the theoretical development of a model that will describe the associated particle production induced by photons, electrons, neutrinos, and antineutrinos. We have studied the associated particle production induced by photons which receive the contributions from the non-resonant terms and from the nucleon, hyperon, and kaon resonances. \end{itemize}

Search for the production of Higgs-portal scalar bosons in the NuMI beam using the MicroBooNE detector

We present the strongest experimental limits to date on the mixing angle, 𝜃, with which a new scalar particle, 𝑆, mixes with the Higgs field in the mass range 110 MeV < 𝑚 𝑆 <155 MeV. This result uses the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to search for decays of these Higgs-portal scalar particles through the 𝑆 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − channel with the decays of kaons in the NuMI neutrino beam acting as the source of the scalar particles. The analysis uses an exposure of 2.01 × 10 21 protons on target of NuMI beam data including periods when the beam focusing system was configured to focus positively charged hadrons and separate periods when negatively charged hadrons were focused. The analysis searches for scalar particles produced from kaons decaying in flight in the beam’s decay volume and at rest in the target and absorber. At 𝑚 𝑆 =125 MeV (𝑚 𝑆 =150 MeV) we set a limit of 𝜃 < 3.19 ×10 −4 (𝜃 < 2.79 ×10 −4 ) at the 95% confidence level.

Light quark loops in ${K}^{\pm}\to {\pi}^{\pm}\nu \overline{\nu}$ from vector meson dominance and update on the Kaon Unitarity Triangle

We use vector meson dominance to calculate non-perturbative contributions to the branching ratio of the rare decay $K$ ± → π ± $v\overline{v}$ stemming from matrix elements involving up-quark loops. The importance of this observable as well as of K 0 → π 0 l + l - and of the direct CP violation parameter ϵ' K is then discussed in the context of a Unitarity Triangle sqtudy based on Kaon sector observables only.
