β -delayed neutron spectroscopy of Co 70 , 72 ground-state and isomeric-state decays

Here, the β-decaying states of 70,72 Co were studied at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using the VANDLE neutron time-of-flight array. The (6 - ,7 - )⁢β-decaying state in 70 Co is near-spherical with a lifetime of 113 ± 7 ms, and the low-spin (1 + ,2 + )⁢β-decaying state is postulated to be the prolate deformed ground state with a lifetime of 508 ± 7 ms. Both decay predominantly to the bound states of 70 Ni. For the first time neutron-emissions from neutron unbound states from both the (6 - ,7 - ) and (1 + ,2 + )⁢β decays were measured. Even with the low statistics data, we were able to disentangle the neutron emission from both decays, which enabled a determination of β-decay strength above the neutron separation energy of 70 Ni. Neutron emission probabilities were measured to be 7.1 ± 1.5% and 9.4 ± 1.7%, respectively, for the (6 - ,7 - ) and (1 + ,2 + ) decays. The decay pattern of the 70 Co is driven by neutron f 5/2 to proton f 7/2 Gamow-Teller transformation. The observed population of neutron unbound states is attributed to the conversion of p 1/2 and p 3/2 neutrons to p 3/2 and p 1/2 protons excited across the Z = 28 closed shell.

Isomeric states in the neutron-rich 𝑁 = 108 nuclei 178 Yb and 179 Lu

A multinucleon transfer reaction with a 136 Xe beam and a gold-backed 176 Yb target populated isomers in N = 108 178 Yb and 179 Lu. The single decay from the t 1/2 = 203(16) ns isomer in 178 Yb to the I π = 4 + level in the ground-state band suggests a I π = 4 − assignment, and multiquasiparticle calculations associate this state with the K π = 4 − , ν 2 (1/2[510], 9/2[624]) configuration. At least two isomers were observed in 179 Lu. One likely couples the K π = 4 − configuration found in 178 Yb to the 9/2[514] quasiproton orbital to form a K π = 17/2 + level (t 1/2 = 1.0(4) µs) which primarily decays into the rotational band based on the 9/2[514] state. A second isomer was observed to decay into this same band, but at higher energy and spin. Based on its feeding pattern, its similarity to an isomer found in 181 Ta, and a multiquasiparticle calculation, it is proposed to correspond to a K π = 29/2 − state based on the π9/2[514]ν 2 (9/2[624], 11/2[615]) configuration. As a result, an analysis of the reduced hindrance factors for negative-parity, two-quasineutron isomers in the rare-earth region is presented as well.

Phycocyanobilin biosynthesis in Galdieria sulphuraria requires isomerization of phycoerythrobilin synthesized by bilin reductases

Phycobiliproteins are essential components of the light-harvesting antennae in cyanobacteria and red algae, requiring covalently bound open-chain tetrapyrrole chromophores (bilins) for proper function. In the red alga Galdieria sulphuraria , the primary chromophore is phycocyanobilin (PCB), despite the apparent presence of only biosynthetic genes for phycoerythrobilin (PEB) biosynthesis (PEBA and PEBB). This observation suggests the presence of an alternative, atypical biosynthetic pathway for PCB. In this study, we confirmed the presence of PEB:PCB isomerase activity in an enriched protein fraction from G. sulphuraria . To further investigate this unusual pathway, we combined in silico analyses with biochemical assays. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed the placement of the G. sulphuraria ferredoxin-dependent bilin reductases within the PEBA and PEBB lineages, typically associated with PEB synthesis, whereas the related red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae was found to contain only PCYA. This gene distribution presents a functional paradox. G. sulphuraria harbors PEB biosynthesis genes but no detectable PEB chromophores and lacks known PCB-synthesizing enzymes despite containing PCB. Functional characterization of recombinant GsPEBA (G. sulphuraria PEBA) and GsPEBB ( G. sulphuraria PEBB) confirmed their roles in PEB synthesis, demonstrating that these enzymes have not evolved to synthesize PCB or act as isomerases despite their phylogenetic placement. In contrast, Cm PCYA ( C. merolae PCYA) catalyzed direct PCB formation from biliverdin. Together, these findings reveal an atypical isomerase-based pathway for PCB biosynthesis in G. sulphuraria , expanding our understanding of bilin metabolism and providing new insight into the evolutionary flexibility of photosynthetic pigment biosynthesis in Rhodophyta.

Decay spectroscopy of an isomeric state in 251 Md

Superheavy elements ( Z ≥ 104) owe their existence to quantum shell effects which stabilize them against fission. Experimental studies of their structure are challenging, and only recently has direct information begun to emerge. Meanwhile, the comparative ease of producing the transfermium nuclei offers an alternative approach. These nuclei are well-deformed ( β 2 ≈ 0.28) owing to the existence of deformed gaps in the single particle spectrum near Z = 100 and N = 152. Because of this, the proton orbitals near the Fermi surface in this region are expected to originate from the spherical sub shells which define the shell gaps near Z = 114. In this sense, the transfermium nuclei act as a testing ground for theoretical models used to describe the superheavy region. Deformed odd-mass nuclei are of particular interest since they can provide direct insight into the single particle structure.

Isomeric structures and structural transformations in small clusters

The temperature dependence of the energies of the isomers of a seven-particle system is studied with a view toward understanding ergodicity problems in Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the phase space of particles in a cluster is not ergodic at lower temperatures.

Correlation of physical properties with molecular structure for some dicyclic hydrocarbons having high thermal-energy release per unit volume -- 2-alkylbiphenyl and the two isomeric 2-alkylbicyclohexyl series

Three homologous series of related dicyclic hydrocarbons are presented for comparison on the basis of their physical properties, which include net heat of combustion, density, melting point, boiling point, and kinematic viscosity. The three series investigated include the 2-n-alkylbiphenyl, 2-n-alkylbicyclohexyl (high boiling), and 2-n-alkylbiphenyls (low boiling) series through c sub 16, in addition to three branched-chain (isopropyl, sec-butyl, and isobutyl) 2-alkylbiphenyls and their corresponding 2-alkylbicyclohexyls. The physical properties of the low-boiling and high-boiling isomers of 2-sec-butylbicyclohexyl and 2-isobutylbicyclohexyl are reported herein for the first time.

Computed Minimum Energy Pathway for Isomerization in Ketene

A minimum energy pathway for interchange of the CH groups in ketene via a C2v structure has been obtained using complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) derivative methods with a polarized valence double zeta basis set to define the reaction pathway followed by multi-reference internally contracted configuration interaction (ICCI) calculations with a [3s3p2d/3s2p] basis set to determine the energetics. Qualitatively, the C2v structure is found to be a shallow minimum on the potential energy surface separated from ketene by a small barrier (0.2 kcal/mol), a second minimum, and a larger barrier (3.0 kcal/mol). The minimum energy pathway leading from the C2v minimum to ketene starts by simultaneous rotation of the farther CH group out of the plane and away from the oxygen followed by increase of the CCO angle and subsequent 1,2-migration of the H of the nearer CH group toward the carbon of the farther CH group.

Studying Biological Rhythms of Person's Skin-galvanic Reaction and Dynamics of Light Transmission by Isomeric Substance in Space Flight Conditions

Intensity and amplitude of human functional systems and human most important organs are wavelike, rhythmic by nature. These waves have constant periodicity, phase and amplitude. The mentioned characteristics can vary, however their variations have a pronounced reiteration in the course of time. This indicates a hashing of several wave processes and their interference. Stochastic changes in wave processes characteristics of a human organism are explained either by 'pulsations' associated with hashing (superposition) of several wave processes and their interference, or by single influence of environmental physical factors on a human organism. Human beings have respectively periods of higher and lower efficiency, state of health and so on, depending not only of environmental factors, but also of 'internal' rhythmic factor. Sometimes peaks and falls periodicity of some or other characteristics is broken. Disturbance of steady-state biological rhythms is usually accompanied by reduction of activity steadiness of the most important systems of a human organism. In its turn this has an effect on organism's adaptation to changing living conditions as well as on general condition and efficiency of a human being. The latter factor is very important for space medicine. Biological rhythmology is a special branch of biology and medicine, it studies rhythmic activity mechanisms of organs, their systems, individuals and species. Appropriate researches were also carried out in space medicine.
