Tagged deep inelastic scattering measurement on deuterium with the LAD experiment

Here, the origin of the modification of the quark structure of nucleons in the nuclear medium can be tested with tagged recoil nucleon measurements from deep inelastic scattering off electrons on deuterium. The LAD experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab) will measure the modification of the neutron structure function for high-momentum, highly-virtual neutrons by measuring the spectator recoil protons in coincidence with the scattered electron. An update on the experimental setup and projected results is presented. The experiment will collect data in Fall 2024.

Constraining capture cross sections using proton inelastic scattering as a surrogate reaction

The surrogate reaction method is an alternative to direct measurements of compound nuclear reaction cross sections. We introduce theory tools for extracting capture cross sections from experiments that use proton inelastic scattering as a surrogate reaction mechanism. This makes it possible to constrain compound nucleus decay models which are typically the largest source of uncertainty in capture cross section calculations. This letter describes the theory developments that were used to simultaneously infer 89 Y(p, γ) and 89 Zr(n, γ) cross sections from 90 Zr(p, p′γ) surrogate measurements.

The adiabatic semiclassical perturbation theory for vibrationally inelastic scattering. I - Collinear calculations. II - Three-dimensional treatment

A semiclassical approximation to treat vibrationally inelastic scattering is developed. The vibrational basis set used is adiabatic with respect to a reference potential which is chosen to be as close as possible to the true potential and also gives easily obtainable solutions to the vibrational wave equation. The radial wave functions are obtained using the WKB approximation, and the coupled Schroedinger equations are solved by a first-order perturbation method to yield a phase shift matrix which is exponentiated to give the full scattering matrix. Results were obtained for all the cases computed by Secrest and Johnson and by Clark and Dickinson, and the agreement is better than 10% for half of the cross-sections and rarely off by more than a factor of 2.

Longitudinal spin transfer to Λ hyperons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the CLAS12 spectrometer

The polarization of Λ hyperons is preserved in the angular distribution of their decay products. This property allows one to study the spin structure of the Λ. In semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering where a high energy lepton interacts with a nucleon target and one or more hadrons and the scattered lepton are detected in the final state, the probability for a struck quark to impart the polarization of the lepton to the Λ may be measured. In particular, in electron-proton scattering this quantity may be related to the longitudinal light quark polarization of the Λ. Currently, limited experimental data cannot discriminate between different models of Λ spin structure. This work reports on the measurement of the longitudinal spin transfer 𝐷$^{Λ}_{𝐿⁢𝐿′}$ to the Λ using data taken by the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab with a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. This measurement is the most precise to date, and, in comparison with theory predictions, it offers valuable insight into the relative dominance of current and target fragmentation in Λ production.

Polarized Deep-Inelastic Scattering with Spin Correlations in Herwig 7

This repository is the research software and reproducibility companion for the HerwigPol polarized deep-inelastic scattering implementation developed for Herwig 7. It brings together the modified Herwig and ThePEG source snapshots, the curated POLDIS fixed-order reference code, the custom Rivet analyses, the DIS validation workflow, and the paper source in a single formal repository layout. The repository is intended to preserve the source-level ingredients needed to rebuild and re-run the validated DIS studies. It therefore tracks code, input cards, workflow drivers, and technical notes, while intentionally excluding generated artifacts such as build products, campaign outputs, merged YODA files, plots, and rendered paper outputs.

Heavy quark mass effects in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering at approximate NNLO in the Aivazis-Collins-Olness-Tung scheme

The approximate SACOT-𝜒 scheme for heavy quark production in deep-inelastic scattering was initially formulated for the neutral current structure functions 𝐹 2 and 𝐹 𝐿 . We extend this approach to the charged current case (also including 𝐹 3 ), and thereby complete the definitions for the most relevant inclusive structure functions. Furthermore, we implement these structure functions in the open-source code APFEL++ which provides fast numerical evaluations over a wide kinematic range; this addition to the APFEL++ code is publicly available, with details provided in the Appendix. This SACOT-𝜒 implementation enables detailed numerical insights on the mass dependence of the structure functions and cross sections in the (𝑥,𝑄 2 )-plane for both neutral and charged current processes. We consider kinematic regions relevant for the experimental measurements from fixed-target 𝜈⁢ DIS experiments (NuTeV, CCFR, and Chorus) and HERA, and also projections for the upcoming EIC. In particular, the 𝜈⁢ DIS experiments reveal a surprisingly strong dependence on the mass effects, offering valuable insights that may help resolve long-standing challenges in accurately describing these datasets.

Role of the chiral anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering. III. Wess-Zumino-Witten contributions and chiral Ward identities for finite quark mass

We extend our prior results on the worldline computation of the axial vector-vector-vector (AVV) triangle anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) to the finite mass case by computing in addition the pseudoscalar-vector-vector (PVV) triangle graph. For the well-studied QED case, we show explicitly how the off-forward AVV pole exactly cancels an identical PVV pole. We then demonstrate the dramatic difference in QCD due to the chiral condensate, which qualitatively modifies anomalous Ward identities. As in the massless case, the anomaly pole in QCD is canceled by the dynamics of a primordial isosinglet pseudoscalar η ¯ -meson, whose Wess-Zumino-Witten coupling to the topological charge density shifts the pole to the physical η ′ mass, with the finite quark mass contribution differing by O ( 10 % ) from the Witten-Veneziano formula. We obtain a compact analytic expression for the finite mass corrections to Shore and Veneziano’s result that the proton’s net quark helicity Δ Σ ∝ χ QCD ′ | m = 0 ( 0 ) , the forward slope of the topological susceptibility in the chiral limit, and show they are of the order of a few percentages. Our prior prediction that the polarized DIS structure function g 1 is quenched by sphaleronlike topological transitions at small x is unaffected by quark mass effects. Our results illustrate how worldline computations of anomalous processes, in synergy with lattice computations and nonet chiral perturbation theory, can uncover novel nonperturbative features of QCD at the Electron-Ion Collider. When Photoelectrons Meet Gas Molecules: Determining the Role of Inelastic Scattering in Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Inelastic photoelectron scattering (IPES) by gas molecules, a critical phenomenon observed in ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), complicates spectral interpretation due to kinetic energy loss in the primary spectrum and the appearance of additional features at higher binding energies. In this study, we systematically investigate IPES in various gas environments using APXPS, providing detailed insights into interactions between photoelectrons emitted from solid surfaces and surrounding gas molecules. Corelevel XPS spectra of Au, Ag, Zn, and Cu metals were recorded over a wide kinetic energy range in the presence of CO 2 , N 2 , Ar, and H 2 gases, demonstrating the universal nature of IPES across different systems. Additionally, we analyzed spectra of scattering effects induced by gas-phase interactions without metal solids. In two reported CO 2 -reduction systems (p-GaN/ Au/Cu and p-Si/TaO x /Cu), we elucidated that IPES is independent of the composition, structure, or size of the solid materials. Using metal foil platforms, we further developed an analytical model to extract electron excitation cross sections of gas molecules. These findings enhance our understanding of IPES mechanisms and enable the predictions of IPES structures in other solid–gas systems, providing a valuable reference for future APXPS studies and improving the accuracy of spectral analysis in gas-rich catalytic interfaces.

Measurement of $\nu_\mu/\bar\nu_\mu$ CC double-differential cross sections on MINERvA hydrocarbon target for the shallow inelastic scattering background region

Cross section measurements are essential for all neutrino oscillation experiments. In fact, uncertaintiesassociated to cross section model parameters constitute one of the dominant sources oferrors in current oscillation analyses. In particular, understanding neutrino-induced pion productionin the kinematic regime known as shallow inelastic scattering (SIS) is critical for improvingneutrino interaction modeling in event generators. In this study, 416,233 (237,468) muon neutrino(antineutrino) interactions are measured in a SIS background region, predominantly made ofbaryon resonances. The analyzed datasets were collected from 2013 to 2019, comprising neutrinosgenerated by the Fermilab NuMI facility, with mean energy of 6 GeV, and the interactions occurredon the MINERvA hydrocarbon target. The measurements are presented as double-differential crosssections in terms of the outgoing muon longitudinal and transverse momentum components, aswell as the Bjorken x and y variables. Comparisons between the extracted data and predictionsfrom several generators reveal significant discrepancies across most kinematic bins.

Microscopic calculations with noniterative finite amplitude methods and the application to neutron radiative captures and inelastic scatterings

We derive the fully self-consistent quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) equations with noniterative finite amplitude methods and calculate the transition strengths of giant resonances. Then, we apply the QRPA results to both neutron radiative capture calculations based on the statistical Hauser-Feshbach theory and inelastic scattering calculations based on distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA). We compare the calculated results with available experimental data and demonstrate how our approach can reproduce giant resonances and various nuclear reactions.
