Enhancing lifetime, forecasting, and economic benefits of photovoltaic technologies undergoing UV-induced degradation with optical filtering

Ultraviolet-induced degradation (UV-ID) of various PV cell types was analyzed under optical UV filters with different cutoff wavelengths. Cell types studied included interdigitated back contact (IBC), passivated emitter and rear totally diffused (PERT), and heterojunction technology (HJT) based on crystalline Si (c-Si), and metal halide perovskite (MHP) cells. Analyzing degradation rates in two distinct regimes proved beneficial for all cell types. We used empirical linearizing functions ln(t) for c-Si technologies and 2 √t for MHP samples where t is time. These were applied to extrapolate UV-induced degradation over the lifetime of PV modules under various levels of optical UV filtering and used to predict the relative economic benefits for PV power plants. Degradation rates for all technologies were generally faster under the long pass optical filters having shorter cutoff wavelengths transmitting more UV irradiation and at elevated temperatures when testing MHP samples in the range between 60 °C and 90 °C.

Photometric Classification of Early-time Supernova Light Curves with SCONE

Abstract In this work, we present classification results on early supernova light curves from SCONE, a photometric classifier that uses convolutional neural networks to categorize supernovae (SNe) by type using light-curve data. SCONE is able to identify SN types from light curves at any stage, from the night of initial alert to the end of their lifetimes. Simulated LSST SNe light curves were truncated at 0, 5, 15, 25, and 50 days after the trigger date and used to train Gaussian processes in wavelength and time space to produce wavelength–time heatmaps. SCONE uses these heatmaps to perform six-way classification between SN types Ia, II, Ibc, Ia-91bg, Iax, and SLSN-I. SCONE is able to perform classification with or without redshift, but we show that incorporating redshift information improves performance at each epoch. SCONE achieved 75% overall accuracy at the date of trigger (60% without redshift), and 89% accuracy 50 days after trigger (82% without redshift). SCONE was also tested on bright subsets of SNe ( r < 20 mag) and produced 91% accuracy at the date of trigger (83% without redshift) and 95% five days after trigger (94.7% without redshift). SCONE is the first application of convolutional neural networks to the early-time photometric transient classification problem. All of the data processing and model code developed for this paper can be found in the SCONE software package 1 1 github.com/helenqu/scone located at github.com/helenqu/scone (Qu 2021).

Dramatic Rebrightening of the Type-changing Stripped-envelope Supernova SN 2023aew

Abstract Multipeaked supernovae with precursors, dramatic light-curve rebrightenings, and spectral transformation are rare, but are being discovered in increasing numbers by modern night-sky transient surveys like the Zwicky Transient Facility. Here, we present the observations and analysis of SN 2023aew, which showed a dramatic increase in brightness following an initial luminous (−17.4 mag) and long (∼100 days) unusual first peak (possibly precursor). SN 2023aew was classified as a Type IIb supernova during the first peak but changed its type to resemble a stripped-envelope supernova (SESN) after the marked rebrightening. We present comparisons of SN 2023aew’s spectral evolution with SESN subtypes and argue that it is similar to SNe Ibc during its main peak. P-Cygni Balmer lines are present during the first peak, but vanish during the second peak’s photospheric phase, before H α resurfaces again during the nebular phase. The nebular lines ([O i ], [Ca ii ], Mg i ], H α ) exhibit a double-peaked structure that hints toward a clumpy or nonspherical ejecta. We analyze the second peak in the light curve of SN 2023aew and find it to be broader than that of normal SESNe as well as requiring a very high 56 Ni mass to power the peak luminosity. We discuss the possible origins of SN 2023aew including an eruption scenario where a part of the envelope is ejected during the first peak and also powers the second peak of the light curve through interaction of the SN with the circumstellar medium.

Methods of forming interdigitated back contact layers

Methods of forming interdigitated back contact (IBC) layers are provided. According to an aspect of the invention, a first layer having alternating regions of n-type amorphous hydrogenated silicon and p-type amorphous hydrogenated silicon is formed on a second layer of intrinsic amorphous hydrogenated silicon. The first layer and the second layer are then annealed, such that dopants from the first layer diffuse into the second layer, and the first layer and the second layer crystallize into polysilicon.

WIPP Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System (SSCVS) Quality Assurance Program - 20237

Construction and major equipment fabrication are underway for a new ventilation exhaust system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The new system will provide continuous HEPA filtration of the exhaust from the WIPP underground while meeting the ventilation demands for expanded waste emplacement and mining operations over the next 40 years. The SSCVS project has proceeded with the awarding of CD-3A for Long Lead Procurements followed by CD-2/3 approval for the construction of the facilities. The SSCVS project team made the decision to increase the quality oversight throughout the complete project per the Project Quality Assurance Plan (PQAP) such that it can ensure the final products meet applicable NQA-1 requirements and general quality requirements, and that the project will proceed to operations without significant delays due to post installation quality concerns. The PQAP was established prior to approval of the project at the CD-2/3 milestone. The SSCVS project has 2 major long lead procurements which commenced with the awarding of CD-3A. These procurements include the HEPA filter housing assemblies and the Exhaust Fans. There are 22 HEPA filter assemblies for the SSCVS, which are designated Safety Significant for pressure boundary confinement, per the approved PDSA. The exhaust fans also have Safety Significant components to maintain the pressure confinement boundary. NWP made the decision to install resident Quality Inspectors at the fabrication facilities to ensure the documentation for each fabricated unit meets all the QA requirements as defined in the respective contract documents. For the construction of the SSCVS Salt Reduction Building (SRB) and New Filter Building (NFB), dedicated, on-site quality inspectors have been utilized to ensure that all work being performed will comply with quality requirements and the Special Inspections as defined in IBC-2015. At each stage of inspection, hold points are placed into the work packages to ensure NWP QA personnel are present to inspect and verify the installations are in accordance with the design specifications, codes and standards. With this level of oversight, NWP anticipates that the level of quality related issues, as seen on multiple other DOE complex site projects, will be avoided and that the commissioning, start-up and hot operations will progress in a timely fashion, as all documentation will be in place and approved prior to initiation of these activities. ECAR-6601 Rev 1 MARVEL Project Seismic Accelerations

The MARVEL reactor design requirements are currently listed within TFR-2576. Several MARVEL subsystems are required to be designed to seismic criteria of IBC 2015. This Engineering Analysis (EA) report documents the accelerations that need to be used in an equivalent-static method seismic analysis to satisfy this requirement.
