Vacuum distillation/vapor filtration water recovery

The development and evaluation of a vacuum distillation/vapor filtration (VD/VF) water recovery system are considered. As a functional model, the system converts urine and condensates waste water from six men to potable water on a steady-state basis. The system is designed for 180-day operating durations and for function on the ground, on zero-g aircraft, and in orbit. Preparatory tasks are summarized for conducting low gravity tests of a vacuum distillation/vapor filtration system for recovering water from urine.

Effects of ultra-clean and centrifugal filtration on rolling-element bearing life

Fatigue tests were conducted on groups of 65-mm bore diameter deep-groove ball bearings in a MIL-L-23699 lubricant under two levels of filtration to determine the upper limit in bearing life under the strictest possible lubricant cleanliness conditions. Bearing fatigue lives, surface distress and weight loss were compared to previous bearing fatigue tests in contaminated and noncontaminated oil filters having absolute removal ratings of 3, 30, 49, and 105 microns, with lubricant and sump temperatures maintained at 347 K. Ultra clean lubrication was found to produce bearing fatigue lives that were approximately twice that obtained in previous tests with contaminated oil using 3 micron absolute filtration. It was also observed that the centrifugal oil filter has the same effectiveness as a 30 micron absolute filter in preventing surface damage.

Investigation of the influence of the zeta-potential on the filtration rate in the presence of collectors

The value of the zeta-potential does not have an explicit effect, which is expressed by a simple math correlation, on filtration rate when a solution of the tested collector is filtered through a cake prepared under standard conditions from the examined particulate material. The zeta-potential measurements and filtration tests were carried out on silica and galena with solutions contg. a cationic container ANP and Et xanthane, resp. at PH = 6.5, varying concentration of the agent (0-2500 g/ton), and under a vacuum of 100 to 600 mm Hg.

Optimal filtration of the atmospheric parameters profiles

The idea of optimal Marcovian filtration of fluctuating profiles from lidar signals is developed but as applied to a double-frequency sounding which allows the use of large cross sections of elastic scattering and correct separation of the contributions due to aerosol and Rayleigh scatterings from the total lidar return. The filtration efficiency is shown under different conditions of sounding using a computer model. The accuracy of restituted profiles (temperature, pressure, density) is determined by the elements of a posteriori matrix K. The results obtained allow the determination of the lidar power required for providing the necessary accuracy of restitution of the atmospheric parameter profiles at chosen wavelengths of sounding in the ultraviolet and visible range.

Quantifying oil filtration effects on bearing life

Rolling-element bearing life is influenced by the number, size, and material properties of particles entering the Hertzian contact of the rolling element and raceway. In general, rolling-element bearing life increases with increasing level of oil filtration. Based upon test results, two equations are presented which allow for the adjustment of bearing L(sub 10) or catalog life based upon oil filter rating. It is recommended that where no oil filtration is used catalog life be reduced by 50 percent.

Towards a Modern Theory of Multiphase Filtration Flow

An alternative theoretical model of joint filtration flow of immiscible incompressible fluids is presented. The model takes into account relaxation processes due to the interchange of the fluids between pores of difference sizes which is driven by capillary forces. The fluids occupy connected regions in a four-dimensional space formed by three coordinates and the pore length scale. When the fluid exchange between pores of given sizes is effected by way of successive flow through pores of all the intermediate sizes, the pressure within each region is governed by a hyperbolic equation, the role of time being played by the pore linear scale. Pressure jumps across hypersurfaces separating the regions equal corresponding values of the capillary pressure. A supplementary condition at any such hypersurface requires the speed of its displacement in the four-dimensional space to coincide with the normal velocity components of both the adjoining fluids. As a result, a principally new statement of multiphase filtration flow problems is gained with allowance for capillary relaxation in the porous space.

Water Filtration Products

American Water Corporation manufactures water filtration products which incorporate technology originally developed for manned space operations. The formula involves granular activated charcoal and other ingredients, and removes substances by catalytic reactions, mechanical filtration, and absorption. Details are proprietary. A NASA literature search contributed to development of the compound. The technology is being extended to a deodorizing compound called Biofresh which traps gas and moisture inside the unit. Further applications are anticipated.

NASA Lunar Dust Filtration and Separations Workshop Report

NASA Glenn Research Center hosted a 2.5-day workshop, entitled "NASA Lunar Dust Filtration and Separations Workshop" at the Ohio Aerospace Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 18 to 20, 2008. The purpose of the workshop was to address the issues and challenges of particulate matter removal from the cabin atmospheres in the Altair lunar lander, lunar habitats, and in pressurized rovers. The presence of lunar regolith dust inside the pressurized volumes was a theme of particular interest. The workshop provided an opportunity for NASA, industry experts, and academia to identify and discuss the capabilities of current and developing air and gas particulate matter filtration and separations technologies as they may apply to NASA s needs. A goal of the workshop was to provide recommendations for strategic research areas in cabin atmospheric particulate matter removal and disposal technologies that will advance and/or supplement the baseline approach for these future lunar surface exploration missions.

High-gradient magnetic filtration of UO 2 colloids from aqueous suspensions

Environmental samples often contain innocuous components that make trace actinide analysis difficult and expensive. Therefore, it is expedient to separate these materials from actinide particles. One characteristic of many actinides is that they are paramagnetic. High-gradient magnetic filtration (HGMF) is a non-destructive technique that selectively captures magnetic constituents from a matrix containing non-magnetic species. Here, in this work, a novel HGMF device made of a permanent magnet array was used to effectively separate UO 2 particles from undesirable soil species. Up to 88% of the UO 2 particles present in suspensions were effectively captured by HGMF, resulting in their enrichment and a substantial reduction in the concentrations of other constituents.

Filtration Performance of Simulated 200 West Area Waste Feeds

This report describes the scaled experimental system and approach used to examine dead-end filtration performance of representative 200W waste feeds. The scaled system, which was originally designed and assembled to test Tank Side Cesium Removal (TSCR) system performance with higher-than-expected solid loadings in 2021 (Schonewill et al. 2021), was repurposed to conduct the current experiments at ~1/145 of full scale (based on throughput). Six experimental runs were conducted with five different 200W waste feed simulants: three using a DEF module scaled for TSCR and three using a DEF module scaled for the 200W process modules (based on the current design for the Advanced Modular Pretreatment System). Each experiment was run continuously for multiple days with an operating approach prototypic of the full-scale system. Staff performing the experimental runs monitored performance, obtained data from calibrated process instruments, and collected samples for observation and analysis. The measured data are presented with a focus on assessing DEF performance – specifically, the filters’ differential pressure response to the five waste simulants, frequency and efficacy of backwashing, and baseline recovery between experimental runs; data related to ion exchange column performance are also discussed in cases where the opportunity arose. The experimental campaign demonstrated that the DEFs satisfied their primary function of protecting the ion exchange column from solid intrusion for all the representative simulants used. The filters readily handled solids loadings of =500 ppm (and even greater), especially the modules scaled to the 200W process modules. Adjustments to the processing flow rate and reductions in feed temperature were observed to affect the rate of differential pressure increase on the filters, but neither adversely affected the ability of the DEFs to perform their primary function. Backflushing reliably recovered filter performance in all runs, although it did not prevent irreversible fouling for one simulant. The run that exhibited irreversible fouling established that both the quantity and the nature of the solids being filtered need to be considered when projecting filter performance.

Field Evaluation of Do-It-Yourself Air Filtration Solutions for Evaporative Coolers to Reduce Ambient Particle Infiltration in Homes in Wildfire-Affected Communities

Evaporative coolers (ECs) introduce outdoor air pollutants indoors when operating. This study evaluates the potential of do-it-yourself (DIY) air filtration solutions for ECs to cost-effectively reduce the infiltration of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in homes with ECs using measurements in 48 homes in wildfire-affected agricultural communities in California. All homes received one portable air cleaner (PAC); 25 homes also received DIY filters (mostly MERV 13) attached to their ECs. PurpleAir monitors measured indoor and outdoor PM2.5 concentrations. PAC operation was monitored in all of the homes. EC usage was monitored in some homes and predicted using relative humidity dynamics in all homes. Conditional analyses between EC likely on and off conditions were used to evaluate the impacts of DIY EC filters on ambient PM2.5 infiltration, including during several wildfire-affected days. Median levels of ambient PM2.5 infiltration increased ∼36-42% in homes with only PAC interventions when ECs were likely operating compared to only ∼10-11% in homes with both PACs and DIY EC filters. Pre/postintervention comparisons in a subset of homes confirmed PM2.5 infiltration reductions. EC filter performance declined after extended use. Results suggest that short-term EC filter deployments are likely a cost-effective way to mitigate wildfire smoke infiltration inside these homes.
