REPACT tool: A Screening Model for Repurposing Natural Gas Pipelines

Presentation on Reuse of Existing Pipelines for Adapted Carbon Dioxide Transport (REPACT) Tool for the January 2025 FECM interagency CO2 Transport topic team Meeting. The tool enables the user to determine whether a pipeline that was originally deployed for natural gas transport can be reused for carbon dioxide (CO2) transport.

Design and Evaluation of Environmental Barrier Coatings for Protection of Ceramic Matrix Composites in Hydrogen-Based Turbines

This presentation at the 2024 FECM Spring Project Review Meeting summarizes ongoing work at NETL aimed at enabling the use of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials in next-generation high-efficiency power generation turbines fueled by hydrogen, natural gas, or other fuels. The work broadly involves three aspects (1) phase-field damage modeling of CMCs and the environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) used to protect them (2) computational design of new and improved EBCs and (3) performance testing of EBCs using a novel gas turbine combustion simulation rig developed at NETL. An overview on current status and next steps for each aspect of the project are presented.

CMCSCFCB—Critical Minerals in Coaly Strata of the Cherokee-Forest City Basin

This report summarizes results of CMCSCFCB—Critical Minerals in Coaly Strata of the Cherokee-Forest City Basin, a multiyear and multidisciplinary study funded through DE-FOA-0002364 as part of the Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) Carbon Ore, Rare Earth and Critical Minerals (CORE-CM) Initiative for U.S. Basins. Our working group of state and tribal agencies collected data and made interpretations included herein. It also surveyed the regional potential for critical mineral/material production.

"Mining" for Critical Minerals: Critical Minerals from Fossil Energy Waste Byproducts

NETL researcher Mengling Stuckman is an invited speaker for the panel discussion session of "Mining for Critical Minerals" at the Marcellus Shale Coalition event, "Shale 2.0: Learn the Facts about Upstream, Midstream and Downstream". Recent studies from DOE have shown that produced water and drill cuttings from the development of unconventional shale in Appalachia has a significant source of valuable critical minerals and will support bolstering America's supply chain security, putting Pennsylvania in a unique position to capitalize. The panel discussion facilitates obtaining an overview of pipeline capacity needs, downstream users for natural gas and effectively educating and engaging the public relevant to the Marcellus Shale community. The event also offers opportunities for local oil and gas industries, water and waste management companies to work with NETL and participate in FECM’s Critical Mineral program. Industrial feedbacks and participation as outcomes of this invited talk will accelerate the technology and knowledge transfer for the DOE’s Critical Mineral program and for DOE’s mission to unleash American Energy and lead in energy innovation.

Midwest Regional Carbon Conversion/Utilization Procurement Grant Workshop

https://events.usea.org/events/midwest-regional-carbon-conversionutilization-procurement-grant-workshop As the U.S. economy moves toward clean energy and a lower carbon future, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking to partner with states, communities, and industries to support the procurement and development of carbon conversion products. These efforts have been enabled by provisions included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). As part of the BIL, supporting the Administration’s goal to achieve a carbon-free power sector by 2035 and putting the United States on a path to a net-zero economy by 2050, a new initiative was established within DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management through its Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program. The new initiative will establish a demonstration grant program to issue grants to eligible entities to procure commercial and industrial products derived from the conversion of anthropogenic carbon oxides and demonstrate a significant net reduction in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to incumbent technologies, processes, and products. DOE-FECM will establish a demonstration grant program within the Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program to support eligible applicants that procure those commercial and industrial products derived from anthropogenic carbon oxides. Therefore, the Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program, with the assistance of the United States Energy Association (USEA), will conduct a series of workshops (both virtual and in-person) with relevant stakeholders, e.g., product manufacturers, eligible entities, or their representative national organizations (e.g., United States Conference of Mayors, etc.) to solicit input and ideas on challenges and opportunities for a potential grant program.

TEA and LCA Assessments of H2 Production from Coal, Coal/Biomass, and Biomass

This presentation was made at the "Gasification Technology Status and Pathways for Net-Zero Carbon Economy Workshop" held on November 30, 2022. The presentation primarily focuses on TEA/LCA results that NETL has developed for coal gasification w/ & w/o CCS as well as net-zero greenhouse gas coal/biomass gasification. Full reporting of these cases is publicly available in the NETL report titled "Comparison of Commercial, State-of-the-Art, Fossil-Based Hydrogen Production Technologies," April 2022. Additionally, the presentation describes current NETL work in support of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) Gasification Program in the areas of TEA/LCA/Markets analysis of biomass/MSW/waste plastics gasification to achieve cost reductions for net-zero H2 production.
