Manufacturing and quality control of FCC harnesses

The Saturn 5 program contractors encountered many technological challenges and problems relative to inter-connecting wiring and cabling during the development stages of the Saturn program. The knowledge gained from solving these problems, plus recently developed state-of-the-art techniques, materials, and processes were documented in a report prepared for NASA/MSFC. The portions of that report which deal with FCC harnesses are presented.

Multilayer Relaxation and Surface Energies of FCC and BCC Metals Using Equivalent Crystal Theory

The multilayer relaxation of fcc and bcc metal surfaces is calculated using equivalent crystal theory. The results for changes in interplanar spacings of planes close to the surface and the ensuing surface energies are discussed in reference to other theoretical results and compared to available experimental data. The calculation includes high-index surfaces for which no other theoretical results are known.

A High-Precision, Fast, Robust, and Cost-Effective Muon Detector Concept for the FCC-ee

We propose a high-precision, fast, robust and cost-effective muon detector concept for an FCC-ee experiment. This design combines precision drift tubes with fast plastic scintillator strips to enable both spatial and timing measurements. The drift tubes deliver two-dimensional position measurements perpendicular to the tubes with a resolution around 100~$\mu$m. Meanwhile, the scintillator strips, read out with the wavelength-shifting fibers and silicon photomultipliers, provide fast timing information with a precision of 200~ps or better and measure the third coordinate along the tubes with a resolution of about 1~mm.

FCC feasibility studies: Impact of tracker- and calorimeter-detector performance on jet flavor identification and Higgs physics analyses

The ambitious physics program planned for the Future Circular Collider electron-positron phase imposes stringent constraints on detector performance. This study systematically investigates how different detector configurations impact jet flavor identification and their effects on high-profile physics analyses. Using Higgs boson coupling measurements and searches for invisible Higgs decays as benchmarks, we evaluate the sensitivity of these analyses to variations in tracker and calorimeter detector properties. We examine modifications to single-point resolution, material budget, silicon layer placement, and particle identification capabilities, quantifying their effects on flavor-tagging performance. Additionally, we present the first comprehensive study of Higgs-to-invisible decay detection using full detector simulation, providing insights for optimizing detector designs at lepton colliders.

Transverse spin asymmetries and the electron Yukawa coupling at an FCC-ee

We show that measurements of single transverse-spin asymmetries at an 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider can enhance the sensitivity to the electron Yukawa coupling, possibly enabling observation of the Standard Model value for this quantity. We demonstrate that the significance in both the 𝑏⁢$\overline{𝑏}$ and semileptonic 𝑊⁢𝑊 final states can be enhanced by factors of up to 3 compared to inclusive cross-section determinations of this coupling for transversely polarized electrons. If the positrons can be simultaneously longitudinally polarized, even at the level of 30%, the significance can be enhanced by a factor of 5 or more. The method utilizes quantum interference between the Higgs signal and the continuum background and is also applicable in other 𝑊⁢𝑊 and 𝑍⁢𝑍 final states.

Vacancy-mediated transport and segregation tendencies of solutes in fcc nickel under diffusional creep: A density functional theory study

The Nabarro-Herring (NH) diffusional creep theory postulates the vacancy-mediated transport of atoms under a stress gradient as the creep mechanism under low-stress and high-temperature conditions. In multicomponent alloys, we premise that this stress-assisted flow of vacancies to and from grain boundaries will produce elemental segregation. An observation of such segregation, validated with theoretical predictions, can provide the necessary experimental evidence for the occurrence of NH creep. Theoretical calculations of the segregation tendencies via analyzing the dominant solute diffusion mechanisms and the difference in diffusivities of the elements are therefore essential. To this end, this study applies density functional theory calculations of migration barriers and solute-vacancy binding energies as input to the self-consistent mean-field theory to assess the vacancy-mediated diffusion mechanisms, transport coefficients, and segregation tendencies of Co, Cr, Mo, Re, Ta, and W solutes in face-centered-cubic Ni. We find Co, Re, and W to be slow diffusers at high temperatures and Cr, Mo, and Ta to be fast diffusers. Further analysis shows that the slow diffusers tend to always enrich at vacancy sinks over a wide range of temperatures. In contrast, the fast diffusers show a transition from depletion to enrichment as the temperature lowers. Furthermore, our analysis of the segregation tendencies under tensile hydrostatic strains shows that slow diffusers are largely unaffected by the strain and favor enrichment. On the other hand, the fast diffusers exhibit high sensitivity to strain and their segregation tendency can transition from depletion to enrichment at a given temperature. Finally, the transport coefficients calculated in this work are expected to serve as input to mesoscale microstructure models to provide a more rigorous assessment of solute segregation under NH creep conditions.

Multiple origins of extra electron diffractions in fcc metals

Diffuse intensities in the electron diffraction patterns of concentrated face-centered cubic solid solutions have been widely attributed to chemical short-range order, although this connection has been recently questioned. This article explores the many nonordering origins of commonly reported features using a combination of experimental electron microscopy and multislice diffraction simulations, which suggest that diffuse intensities largely represent thermal and static displacement scattering. A number of observations may reflect additional contributions from planar defects, surface terminations incommensurate with bulk periodicity, or weaker dynamical effects.
