EPR investigation of Ti2+ in SrCl2 single crystals.

The observation of 'double quantum' transitions which made it possible to determine the charge state of Ti as 2+ is reported. The EPR spectrum observed at 1.2 K is presented in a graph. The first derivative of the absorption is shown vs the magnetic field. The hyperfine patterns for the Ti-47 and Ti-49 isotopes are identified. Spin-Hamiltonian parameters for Ti(2+) in various cubic hosts are listed.

An EPR investigation of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in SrCl2:y(2 plus) and SrCl2:Sc(2 plus)

EPR spectra have been observed for SrCl2:Y(2+) and SrCl2:Sc(2+) at liquid helium temperatures. At 1.2 K the spectra were dominated by anisotropic hyperfine patterns whose lineshapes and angular dependences were explained using second order solutions of the effective Hamiltonian for an isolated 2Eg state split by large random internal strains. Pronounced asymmetries in some of the strin produced lineshapes for Srcl2:Sc(2+) are shown to result from second order terms in the solution of the effective Hamiltonian. Coexisting with the anisotropic hyperfine patterns are weak nearly isotropic hyperfine patterns with typical lineshapes. Variations in the apparent intensity of lines in these weak hyperfine patterns as functions of the applied magnetic field direction and temperature imply that these lines result from averaging by vibronic relaxation of a portion of the anisotropic pattern. The effective Hamiltonian parameters for SrCl2:La(2+), SrCl2:y(2+), and SrCl2:SC(2+) are analyzed in terms of crystal field theory modified to include a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect.

EPR study of electron bombarded alkali- and alkaline-earth halide crystal surfaces

An EPR study of electron bombarded LiF, NaCl, KCl, CaF2 and BaF2 polycrystalline surfaces has shown that small metal particles are formed on the surfaces of the crystals. Identification was made from CESR signals. The symmetric line-shape of the signals, even at 77 K, indicated that the particles were less than 0.5 micron in diameter. Signals due to F centers were observed in LiF but not in the other halides. Implications to metal deposition are considered.

EPR Investigation of Temporal and Thermal Stability of Irradiated Sweeteners

Abstract Electron paramagnetic resonance was used to study the dosimetric properties of commercial sweeteners (sucrose, saccharin, and stevia). The results concluded that sugar has dosimetric properties of interest, which makes it suitable for dose reconstruction, emergency response, and nuclear forensics applications. The radiation dose response was investigated by irradiating samples up to 10 Gy and found to be linear. The post-irradiation stability of samples was observed to be useful for the intended applications. The results showed that the post-irradiation intensities vary from one sample to another, with the general trend demonstrating a small increase in intensities shortly after irradiation followed by an approximately constant leveling out. Finally, the effect of isochronal annealing was studied by heating samples to various temperatures. The results showed an overall stable behavior of the signal below melting temperature.

Optical, electrical, and EPR studies of polycrystalline Al:Cr:ZnSe gain elements

Transition metal-doped II-VI (TM:II-VI) chalcogenides are well-known laser materials for optically pumped middle-infrared lasers. Cr:ZnSe is a key representative of this class of transition metal doped II-VI gain media and is arguably considered the material of choice for optically pumped middle-infrared lasers. In addition to effective mid-IR lasing under optical excitation, these crystals, being wide-band semiconductors, hold the potential for direct electrical excitation. One way to form n-type conductivity in ZnSe crystals is by annealing them in a melt of Zn-Al alloy. However, this annealing of Cr:ZnSe crystals results in their purification and transfer of chromium to the melt of Zn-Al alloy. In this article, we report on optimizing the doping technique for providing n-type conductivity in Al:Cr:ZnSe crystals while preserving the chromium concentration. Al:Cr:ZnSe samples with resistivities ranging from 10.8 to 992 Ω-cm were fabricated. While the 2 + valence state of Cr is typically dominant in Cr:ZnSe, both Cr 2+ and Cr + were detected in Al:Cr:ZnSe samples. The maximum level of Cr + concentration was measured to be 4 × 10 18 cm -3 .
