Programmable hyperspectral image mapper with on-array processing

A hyperspectral imager includes a focal plane having an array of spaced image recording pixels receiving light from a scene moving relative to the focal plane in a longitudinal direction, the recording pixels being transportable at a controllable rate in the focal plane in the longitudinal direction, an electronic shutter for adjusting an exposure time of the focal plane, whereby recording pixels in an active area of the focal plane are removed therefrom and stored upon expiration of the exposure time, an electronic spectral filter for selecting a spectral band of light received by the focal plane from the scene during each exposure time and an electronic controller connected to the focal plane, to the electronic shutter and to the electronic spectral filter for controlling (1) the controllable rate at which the recording is transported in the longitudinal direction, (2) the exposure time, and (3) the spectral band so as to record a selected portion of the scene through M spectral bands with a respective exposure time t(sub q) for each respective spectral band q.

Reconstruction of 2D line-integrated electron density using angular filter refractometry and a fast marching Eikonal solver

Refraction of an optical probe beam by a plasma can be measured with angular filter refractometry (AFR), which produces an image of the beam’s 2D spatial profile that contains intensity contours corresponding to curves of constant refraction angle. Further analysis is required to reconstruct the underlying line-integrated electron density. Most prior efforts to calculate density from AFR data have been limited to 1D analysis or forward-fitting techniques. Here, in this paper, we detail the use of a fast-marching Eikonal solver to directly invert AFR data and obtain the full 2D line-integrated electron density. The analysis method is first verified with synthetic data and then applied to experimental measurements of single and colliding plasma plumes collected at the OMEGA EP Laser Facility. The calculated densities agree with 1D results and are shown to be consistent with the original AFR measurements via forward modeling. We also discuss ways to improve the precision of this technique.

Linear prediction filter analysis of relativistic electron properties at 6.6 R(E)

The relationship between relativistic electron flux variations at 6.6 R(E) and various published indices and solar wind properties is studied. An attempt is made to characterize the temporal and dimensional relationships between solar wind or magnetic indices and electron flux enhancements. It is shown that the solar wind speed upstream of the earth's magnetosphere is correlated with large increases in the flux of highly relativistic electrons at geostationary orbit.

Identification of frequency components in electron content data by nonlinear filtering

A nonlinear filtering technique, called multiplicative homomorphic signal processing, is used to identify three groups of frequency components in electron content data. The first group of components results from the modulation of solar activity produced by the 27 day solar rotation. The second group is of lunar origin. The lunar frequencies are caused by nonlinear processes which probably occur in the dynamo region. The precise nature of these processes is not fully understood. The third group of frequency components, with a fundamental period of 13.9 days, has an unknown origin.

Long-Wavelength-Infrared Hot-Electron Transistor

Dark current reduced by energy-discriminating quantum filter. Very long-wavelength-infrared hot-electron transistor developed. Device detects photons at wavelengths around 16 micrometers. Comprises photodector integrated with energy-discriminating quantum filter in multiple-quantum-well structure. Made of variously doped and undoped layers of GaAs (quantum wells) and Al(x)Ga(1-x)As (barriers between wells). In transistor, bound-to-continuum GaAs/Al(x)Ga(1-x)As multiple-quantum-well infrared photodectors (QWIP) serves as photosensitive emitter. Wide quantum well serves as base, and there is thick barrier between base and collector. Combination of barrier and base quantum well acts as energy-discriminating filter: electrons with higher energies pass through filter to collector, those with lower energies blocked and diverted from output-current path through base contact.
