Tables of branching ratios for electric dipole transitions between arbitrary levels of hydrogen-like atoms

The branching ratios in hydrogen-like atoms due to the electric-dipole transitions are tabulated for the initial principal and azimuthal quantum numbers n prime l prime, and final principal and azimuthal quantum numbers n l. Average values with respect to l prime are given. The branching ratios not tabulated, including the initial states n prime yields infinity l prime corresponding to the threshold of the continuum, could be obtained by extrapolation.

Electromagnetic fields due to a horizontal electric dipole antenna laid on the surface of a two-layer medium

With applications to geophysical subsurface probings, electromagnetic fields due to a horizontal electric dipole laid on the surface of a two-layer medium are solved by a combination of analytic and numerical methods. Interference patterns are calculated for various layer thickness. The results are interpreted in terms of normal modes, and the accuracies of the methods are discussed.

Electric dipole moment function of the X1 Sigma/+/ state of CO - Vibration-rotation matrix elements for transitions of gas laser and astrophysical interest

The electric dipole moment function of the ground electronic state of carbon monoxide has been determined by combining numerical solutions of the radial Schrodinger equation with absolute intensity data of vibration-rotation bands. The derived dipole moment function is used to calculate matrix elements of interest to stellar astronomy and of importance in the carbon monoxide laser.

The permanent electric dipole moment of CaOH

The X 2 Sigma(+), A 2Pi, and B 2Sigma(+) states of CaOH are characterized theoretically and experimentally, with a focus on the value of the permanent electric dipole moment (mu). Calculations based on SCF and SDCI studies of CaOH (Bauschlicher et al., 1984 and 1986) give mu values of 0.98, 0.49, and 0.11 D for the X, A, and B states, respectively, in good agreement with experiments in which the pure rotational spectra of these states were not detected. Modified Rittner (1951) and ligand-field models of these states are explored in detail, and the applicability of these results to observational searches for CaOH in circumstellar envelopes is indicated.

Electric Dipole Polarizability of Neutron Rich Nuclei

We report that insights into the equation of state of neutron rich matter obtained from the neutron skin thickness of 208 Pb are in sharp conflict with earlier measurements of the electric dipole polarizability. A set of accurately calibrated energy density functionals are used to highlight the tension and to articulate how a highly-intense Gamma Factory may help resolve the present dilemma.

Experimental Determination of the 1 Sigma(+) State Electric-Dipole-Moment Function of Carbon Monoxide up to a Large Internuclear Separation

Experimental intensity information is combined with numerically obtained vibrational wave functions in a nonlinear least squares fitting procedure to obtain the ground electronic state electric-dipole-moment function of carbon monoxide valid in the range of nuclear oscillation (0.87 to 1.01 A) of about the V = 38th vibrational level. Mechanical anharmonicity intensity factors, H, are computed from this function for delta V + = 1, 2, 3, with or = to 38.

Experimental Determination of the Electric Dipole Moment Function of the X Pi-2 Hydroxyl Radical

Laboratory infrared emission spectra of X 2piOH obtained with the Solar McMath FTS and the U. Paris (Orsay) FTS are used in an inversion procedure to experimentally determine the electric dipole moment function (EDMF) of the hydroxyl radical. The spectra produced at Kitt Peak show vibrational levels up to v = 10 and rotational lines in the range, -25.5 less than or equal to m less than or equal to 12.5. The following vibrational quantum number ranges were observed: for DELTA v = -1, v prime = 1 - 9, for DELTA v = -2, v prime = 2 - 10, and for DELTA v = - 3, v prime = 6 - 10. The spectra produced at Orsay show DELTA v = -1, with v prime = 1 - 4 and -22.5 less than or equal to m less than or equal to 9.5 as well as DELTA v = 0, with v prime= 1 - 3, and 9.5 less than or equal to m less than or equal to 25.5. The OH rovibrational wavefunctions used in the inversion procedure were calculated using a procedure which reproduces observed rotational constants with a high level of accuracy. Comparisons of our EDMF are made with previous experimental and theoretical work.

Calculated electric dipole moment of NiH X2Delta

A calculated dipole moment of 2.39 D at R sub e = 2.79 a sub 0 is reported, obtained from complete active space SCF/configuration interaction calculations plus one natural orbital iteration. The calculation is in good agreement with the experimental value of 2.4 + or - 0.1 D measured for the lowest vibrational level. In agreement with Gray et al. (1985), it is found that the dipole moment is strongly correlated with the 3d electron population; the good agreement with experiment thus provides verification of the mixed state model of NiH. It is concluded that the electric dipole moment of NiH is a sensitive test of the quality of the NiH wave function.

Electric dipole moments in a leptoquark scenario for the B-physics anomalies

Vector leptoquarks can address the lepton flavor universality anomalies in decays associated with the b → cℓν and b → sℓℓ transitions, as observed in recent years. While not required to explain the anomalies, these leptoquarks generically yield new sources of CP violation. In this paper, we explore constraints and discovery potential for electric dipole moments (EDMs) in leptonic and hadronic systems. We provide the most generic expressions for dipole moments induced by vector leptoquarks at one loop. We find that O(1) CP-violating phases in tau and muon couplings can lead to corresponding EDMs within reach of next-generation EDM experiments, and that existing bounds on the electron EDM already put stringent constraints on CP-violating electron couplings.

Review of condensed matter laser cooling using electric-dipole-allowed transitions

The cooling of solids via laser-excited anti-Stokes luminescence has reached the cryogenic regime and is now being considered for several applications that benefit from vibration-free cryogenic refrigeration. 4f-4f transitions in rare-earth-doped crystals with low phonon energies currently offer the best laser-cooling performance. These transitions, however, are electric-dipole (ED) forbidden and thus have low cross sections, limiting the minimum achievable temperatures in practical materials to the 50–100 K regime. In contrast, ED-allowed transitions may offer greater cross sections and potentially enable lower minimum temperatures or more compact devices. The search for laser cooling with ED-allowed transitions has been an active field of research over the past decades with a wide variety of materials having been studied. This paper reviews the fundamentals of solid-state laser cooling, provides a preliminary theoretical assessment showing that laser-cooling with ED-allowed transitions is in principle possible, and reviews the experimental results reported to date. While cooling with ED-allowed transitions has not yet been realized in the solid state, the existing experimental body of work along with the theoretical considerations presented here suggest that further research on this topic may be fruitful.

Microgravity Electron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment with a Cold Atom Beam

New physics beyond the Standard Model: The small CP violation contained in the Standard Model is insufficient to account for the baryon/antibaryon asymmetry in the universe. New sources of CP violation are provided by extensions to the Standard Model. They contain CP-violating phases that couple directly to leptons and from which a large electron electric dipole moment (EDM) may be generated. Observation of an electron EDM would be proof of a Standard Model extension because the Standard Model only allows an electron EDM of less than 10(exppp -57) C-m (S.I. units; 1 C-m = 1.6 x 10(exp -21) e-cm). A null result, however, constrains models and improving the limit tightens constraints, further restricting the models.

Measuring the Electric Dipole Moment of the Electron in a Two-Energy Spin-Transparent Storage Ring

We will present a new design of a two-energy storage ring for low energy (0.2 to 2 MeV) polarized electron bunches [1]. The new design is based on the transparent spin methodology that cancels the spin precession due to the magnetic dipole moment at any energy while allowing for spin precession induced by the fundamental physics of interest to accumulate. The buildup of the vertical component of beam polarization can be measured using standard Mott polarimetry that is optimal at low electron energy. These rings can be used to measure the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron, relevant to CP violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, and to search for dark energy and ultra-light dark matter.

Electronic Configuration Assignments for UO from Electric Dipole Moment Measurements

Diatomic UO has more than 48 bound states within 10000 cm -1 of the ground state. This electronic state congestion has been attributed to interleaved states from the electronic configurations U 2+ ($5f^37s$)O 2- and U 2+ ($5f^27s^2$)O 2- , respectively. Ligand field theory predicts that each electronic configuration will exhibit states with distinguishable, characteristic vibrational and rotational constants. However, vibronic state mixing modifies the observed vibration–rotation constants, leading to uncertainty in the configurational assignments. The permanent electric dipole moment ($μ_e$) of an electronic state should also manifest a value that is characteristic of the parent electronic configuration. $μ_e$ and other electrostatic and magnetostatic properties should be less influenced by the vibronic state mixing, providing more robust indicators for configurational assignments. In the present study, we have measured the $μ_e$ values for four electronic states of UO. Here, the results clearly demonstrate that the ground state (X(1)4) and the first electronically excited state ((2)4) are derived from the U 2+ ($5f^37s$)O 2– and U 2+ ($5f^27s^2$)O 2– configurations, respectively.

Electric dipole moments, new forces and dark matter

New sources of CP violation beyond the Standard Model are crucial to explain the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. We discuss the impact of new CP violating interactions in theories where a dark matter candidate is predicted by the cancellation of gauge anomalies. In these theories, the constraint on the dark matter relic density implies an upper bound on the new symmetry breaking scale from which all new states acquire their masses. We investigate in detail the predictions for electric dipole moments and show that if the relevant CP-violating phase is large, experiments such as the ACME collaboration will be able to fully probe the theory.

Electron-positron, parton-parton, and photon-photon production of τ -lepton pairs: Anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments spin effects

Anomalous contributions to the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the τ lepton from new physics scenarios have brought renewed interest in the development of new charge-parity violating signatures in τ -pair production at Belle II energies, and also at higher energies of the Large Hadron Collider and the Future Circular Collider. In this paper, we discuss the effects of spin correlations, including transverse degrees of freedom, in the τ -pair production and decay. These studies include calculating analytical formulas, obtaining numerical results, and building semirealistic observables sensitive to the transverse spin correlations induced by the dipole moments of the τ lepton. The effects of such anomalous contributions to the dipole moments are introduced on top of precision simulations of e − e + → τ − τ + , q q ¯ → τ − τ + and γ γ → τ − τ + processes, involving multibody final states. The τ decays are simulated along with radiative corrections, in particular electroweak box contributions of W W and Z Z exchanges are taken into account. Respective extensions of the Standard Model amplitudes and the reweighting algorithms are implemented into the Monte Carlo, which is used to simulate τ -pair production in e − e + collisions, and the aupinner program, which is used to reweight events with τ pair produced in p p collisions.
