Deciphering supramolecular and polymer-like behavior in metallogels: real-time insights into temperature-modulated gelation and rapid self-assembly dynamics

Bis(pyridyl) urea-based gelators, namely L2 and its isomeric mixture ( L1 + L2 ), are known to self-assemble into 1D architectures capable of inducing supramolecular gelation. Coordination with metal ions such as Ag( I ), Cu( II ), and Fe( III ) introduces structural reinforcement, enabling the formation of distinct 3D networks governed by metal-specific coordination geometries. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation into the temperature-responsive behavior (20–60 °C) of L2 and L1 + L2 , both in the absence and presence of Ag( I ), Dy( III ), Fe( III ), Cu( II ), and Ho( III ), using real-time small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). To probe long-term structural evolution/kinetics of self-assembly, real-time small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was employed on L2 + Ag gels, complemented by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to evaluate thermal transitions. Our results reveal strikingly divergent gelation behaviors: L2 forms a highly rigid, covalent polymer-like network, while L1 + L2 exhibits remarkable thermal adaptability. Upon metal coordination, the assemblies exhibit pronounced crystallinity and exceptional thermal stability, as evidenced by persistent Bragg reflections and invariant d-spacings. Intriguingly, L2 : Fe (2 : 1) and L1 : L2 : Fe (0.5 : 0.5 : 1) in acetonitrile-d 3 (ACN-d 3 ) deviate from this trend, forming thermally labile amorphous gels. These systems show a complete loss of crystalline order, reduced Porod exponents—indicative of collapsed or branched fiber morphologies—and prominent melting and glass transition events in DSC. Fitting SANS and SAXS data to the correlation length model unveiled insightful nanostructural features. While most systems displayed minimal temperature-induced variation in mesh size or surface morphology, L2 : Ag in dimethyl sulfoxide-d 6 (DMSO-d 6 )/D 2 O and L2 : Fe (1 : 1) in ACN-d 3 exhibited a rare combination of thermally stable correlation lengths and increasing high- q exponents—strongly suggesting progressive fiber densification or surface smoothing within a robust gel framework. These findings highlight the tunability and structural resilience of supramolecular gels through precise control of ligand architecture, metal coordination, and temperature, offering valuable design principles for functional soft materials.

Quantum spin ice response to a magnetic field in the dipole-octupole pyrochlore Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7

The pyrochlore magnet Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 has attracted much attention as a quantum spin ice candidate whose novelty derives in part from the dipolar-octupolar nature of the Ce 3+ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom it possesses. We report heat capacity measurements on single crystal samples of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 down to T~0.1K in a magnetic field along the [$1,\bar{1},0$] direction. These measurements show that the broad hump in the zero-field heat capacity moves higher in temperature with increasing field strength and is split into two separate humps by the [$1,\bar{1},0$] magnetic field at ~2T. These separate features are due to the decomposition of the pyrochlore lattice into effectively decoupled chains for fields in this direction: One set of chains (α chains) is polarized by the field while the other (β chains) remains free. This situation is similar to that observed in the classical spin ices Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 , but with the twist that here the strong transverse exchange interactions produce substantial quantum effects. Our theoretical modeling suggests that the β chains are close to a critical state, with nearly-gapless excitations. We also report elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystal Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in [$1,\bar{1},0$] and [0,0,1] magnetic fields at temperatures down to T=0.03K. The elastic scattering behaves consistently with the formation of independent chains for a [$1,\bar{1},0$] field, while the [0,0,1] field produces a single field-induced elastic magnetic Bragg peak at (0,2,0) and equivalent wavevectors, indicating a polarized spin ice state for fields above ~3T. For both [$1,\bar{1},0$] and [0,0,1] magnetic fields, our inelastic neutron scattering results show an approximately dispersionless continuum of scattering that increases in both energy and intensity with increasing field strength. By modeling the complete set of experimental data using numerical linked cluster and semiclassical molecular dynamics calculations, we demonstrate the dominantly multipolar nature of the exchange interactions in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 and the smallness of the parameter θ, which controls the mixing between dipolar and octupolar degrees of freedom. Finally, these results support previous estimates of the microscopic exchange parameters and place strong constraints on the theoretical description of this prominent spin ice candidate.

Developing Accelerated Test Protocols and Tuning Microstructures of the Common Materials to Improve Robustness, Reliability, and Endurance of SOFC Cells

This work is built on our prior work where we found that phase transformation in praseodymium nickelates, e.g. Pr 2 NiO 4 (PNO) and (Pr 1-x Nd x ) 2 NiO 4 (PNNO), can be electrochemically driven, and is substantially faster when compared to thermal annealing studies. The first task aims at an attempt to further accelerate the phase transformation in the oxygen electrode by alternating the current input in the cells, which lead to the development of accelerated test protocols (ATPs). ATPs showed up to 60x faster phase transformation and up to 10x faster performance degradation in (Pr 0.50 Nd 0.50 ) 2 NiO 4 electrodes, when compared to long-term operation under constant current density. Furthermore, the phase stable Nd 2 NiO 4 and (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 )(Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 )O 3 (LSCF6482) electrodes were tested in full cells under ATPs, and showed up to 10x faster performance degradation within 1,100 hours in a comparison with long-term thermal annealing studies and electrochemical operation under constant current density. The second task aims at the quantification of the contributions of cell components to the total impedance of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and distribution of relaxation times (DRT). Specifically, the role of gas composition at both anode and cathode was systematically studied, aiming at deconvoluting, identifying and quantifying the contributions of different electrode processes. This was achieved by first tuning the partial pressure of H 2 at the anode and subsequently varying the partial pressure of O 2 at the cathode. The results suggest that, while DRT offers a viable way of deconvoluting different times distributions, additional attention is needed before assigning a peak to a specific electrode process due to the significant overlap of the contributions from the cathode and the anode. Density function theory studies show that both Pr-vacancies and O-defects play a key role on the activity and stability for nickelates towards oxygen reduction reaction. The resident O-interstitials and oxygen ions in the PrO layer form peroxide (O 2 2- ) nearby Pr vacancies. The O 2 2- limits oxygen-ion transport due to the required additional energy to break its O-O bond. We further calculated the formation and segregation energies for different Ln ions (La, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) in PNO and CeO 2 (111) surfaces. In addition to Nd, Pm and La are suggested as potential dopants in PNO to enhance it stability without decomposition due to their more negative formation energies, lower diffusion energies, and positive separation energies.
