Noninvertible chiral symmetry and axions under electromagnetic duality

We study the implications of noninvertible chiral symmetry in a four-dimensional U(1) gauge theory coupled to massless fermions with electromagnetic 𝑆⁢𝐿⁡(2,ℤ) duality. This is done by deriving the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly of massless QED in the dual frame that is used to explicitly construct the symmetry defect operator as well as the conserved two-form symmetry current. As expected, the noninvertible chiral symmetry is covariant under the duality transformation. This has implications for understanding the nature of kinetic and topological terms in the dual frame and for axion electrodynamics. In particular, we show that to generate an axion potential from a dyon loop, the one-form magnetic symmetry must be explicitly broken by a mutually nonlocal charged state with nonzero pairwise helicity.

Discretely Charged Dark Matter in Inflation Models Based on Holographic Space-Time

The holographic space-time (HST) model of inflation has a potential explanation for dark matter as tiny primordial black holes. Motivated by a recent paper of Barrau, we propose a version of this model where some of the inflationary black holes (IBHs), whose decay gives rise to the Hot Big Bang, carry the smallest value of a discrete symmetry charge. The fraction f of IBHs carrying this charge is difficult to estimate from first principles, but we determine it by requiring that the crossover between radiation and matter domination occurs at the correct temperature T eq ~ 1eV=10 –28 M P . The fraction is small, f ~ 2×10 –9 , so we believe this gives an extremely plausible model of dark matter.

Hidden conformal symmetry of the discrete series scalars in dS 2

In D dimensional de Sitter space, a scalar field has an infinite tower of special tachyonic mass values at which enhanced shift symmetries appear. After modding out by these shift symmetries, these fields correspond to the unitary irreducible representations of the de Sitter group known as the discrete series. We show that in D = 2 these theories have global conformal symmetry. In all but the massless case, these theories have no stress tensor and the conformal symmetry does not act in the usual way on the scalar field. We find the conformal symmetry by explicitly computing the correlators of the shift invariant local operators and showing that they take conformally invariant forms. We also demonstrate how these fields are self-dual in D = 2 , and dual to the shift invariant massive vector fields, which are therefore also conformally invariant. Anisotropic excitonic magnetism from discrete C 4 symmetry in CeRhIn 5

Anisotropy in strongly correlated materials is a central parameter in determining the electronic ground state and is tuned through the local crystalline electric field. This is notably the case in the CeCo x Rh 1 − x In 5 system where the ground-state wave function can provide the basis for antiferromagnetism and/or unconventional superconductivity. We develop a methodology to understand the local magnetic anisotropy and experimentally investigate with neutron spectroscopy applied to antiferromagnetic ( T N = 3.8 K ) CeRhIn 5 , which is isostructural to d -wave superconducting ( T c = 2.3 K ) CeCoIn 5 . Through diagonalizing the local crystal field Hamiltonian with discrete tetragonal C 4 point group symmetry and coupling these states with the random phase approximation, we find two distinct modes polarized along the crystallographic c and a − b planes, agreeing with experiment. The anisotropy and bandwidth, underlying the energy scale of these modes, are tuneable with a magnetic field which we use experimentally to separate in energy single and multiparticle excitations thereby demonstrating the instability of excitations polarized within the crystallographic a − b plane in CeRhIn 5 . We compare this approach to a S eff = 1 2 parametrizations and argue for the need to extend conventional SU(2) theories of magnetic excitations to utilize the multilevel nature of the underlying crystal-field basis states constrained by the local point-group C 4 symmetry. Gravitational Waves from Rapid Structure Formation on Microscopic Scales before Matter-Radiation Equality

We propose a new scenario for the formation of asteroid-mass primordial black holes (PBHs). Our mechanism is based on the annihilation of the string-wall network associated with thebreaking of a U(1) global symmetry into a discrete ZN symmetry. If the potential hasmultiple local minima (N > 1) the network is stable, and the annihilation is guaranteed by a biasamong the different vacua. The collapse of the string-wall network is accompanied bycatastrogenesis, a large production of pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pGBs) — e.g. axions,ALPs, or majorons — gravitational waves, and PBHs. If pGBs rapidly decay into products thatthermalize, as predicted e.g. in the high-quality QCD axion and heavy majoron models, they do notcontribute to the dark matter population, but we show that PBHs can constitute 100% of the darkmatter. The gravitational wave background produced by catastrogenesis with heavy unstable axions,ALPs, or majorons could be visible in future interferometers.

Nature of Symmetry Breaking at the Excitonic Insulator Transition: Ta 2 NiSe 5

Ta 2 NiSe 5 is one of the most promising materials for hosting an excitonic insulator ground state. While a number of experimental observations have been interpreted in this way, the precise nature of the symmetry breaking occurring in Ta 2 NiSe 5 , the electronic order parameter, and a realistic microscopic description of the transition mechanism are, however, missing. By a symmetry analysis based on first-principles calculations, we uncover the discrete lattice symmetries which are broken at the transition. We identify a purely electronic order parameter of excitonic nature that breaks these discrete crystal symmetries and contributes to the experimentally observed lattice distortion from an orthorombic to a monoclinic phase. Our results provide a theoretical framework to understand and analyze the excitonic transition in Ta 2 NiSe 5 and settle the fundamental questions about symmetry breaking governing the spontaneous formation of excitonic insulating phases in solid-state materials.

Neutrino Flavor Model Building and the Origins of Flavor and CP Violation

The neutrino sector offers one of the most sensitive probes of new physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics (SM). The mechanism of neutrino mass generation is still unknown. The observed suppression of neutrino masses hints at a large scale, conceivably of the order of the scale of a rand unified theory (GUT), which is a unique feature of neutrinos that is not shared by the charged fermions. The origin of neutrino masses and mixing is part of the outstanding puzzle of fermion masses and mixings, which is not explained ab initio in the SM. Flavor model building for both quark and lepton sectors is important in order to gain a better understanding of the origin of the structure of mass hierarchy and flavor mixing, which constitute the dominant fraction of the SM parameters. Recent activities in neutrino flavor model building based on non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetries and modular flavor symmetries have been shown to be a promising direction to explore. The emerging models provide a framework that has a significantly reduced number of undetermined parameters in the flavor sector. In addition, such a framework affords a novel origin of CP violation from group theory due to the intimate connection between physical CP transformation and group theoretical properties of non-Abelian discrete groups. Model building based on non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetries and their modular variants enables the particle physics community to interpret the current and anticipated upcoming data from neutrino experiments. Non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetries and their modular variants can result from compactification of a higher-dimensional theory. Pursuit of flavor model building based on such frameworks thus also provides the connection to possible UV completions: in particular, to string theory. We emphasize the importance of constructing models in which the uncertainties of theoretical predictions are smaller than, or at most compatible with, the error bars of measurements in neutrino experiments. While there exist proof-of-principle versions of bottom-up models in which the theoretical uncertainties are under control, it is remarkable that the key ingredients of such constructions were discovered first in top-down model building. We outline how a successful unification of bottom-up and top-down ideas and techniques may guide us towards a new era of precision flavor model building in which future experimental results can give us crucial insights into the UV completion of the SM.

TwInflation

The general structure of Hybrid Inflation remains a very well-motivated mechanism for lower-scale cosmic inflation in the face of improving constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio. However, as originally modeled, the “waterfall” field in this mechanism gives rise to a hierarchy problem (η–problem) for the inflaton after demanding standard effective field theory (EFT) control. We modify the hybrid mechanism and incorporate a discrete “twin” symmetry, thereby yielding a viable, natural and EFT-controlled model of non-supersymmetric low-scale inflation, “Twinflation”. Analogously to Twin Higgs models, the discrete exchange-symmetry with a “twin” sector reduces quadratic sensitivity in the inflationary potential to ultra-violet physics, at the root of the hierarchy problem. The observed phase of inflation takes place on a hilltop-like potential but without fine-tuning of the initial inflaton position in field-space. We also show that all parameters of the model can take natural values, below any associated EFT-cutoff mass scales and field values, thus ensuring straightforward theoretical control. We discuss the basic phenomenological considerations and constraints, as well as possible future directions.

Breaking mirror twin color

We investigate simple extensions of the Mirror Twin Higgs model in which the twin color gauge symmetry and the discrete Z2 mirror symmetry are spontaneously broken. This is accomplished in a minimal way by introducing a single new colored triplet, sextet, or octet scalar field and its twin along with a suitable scalar potential. This spontaneous Z2 breaking allows for a phenomenologically viable alignment of the electroweak vacuum, and leads to dramatic differences between the visible and mirror sectors with regard to the residual gauge symmetries at low energies, color confinement scales, and particle spectra. In particular, several of our models feature a remnant SU(2) or SO(3) twin color gauge symmetry with a very low confinement scale in comparison to ΛQCD. Furthermore, couplings between the colored scalar and matter provide a new dynamical source of twin fermion masses, and due to the mirror symmetry, these lead to a variety of correlated visible sector effects that can be probed through precision measurements and collider searches.

Primordial black hole dark matter from catastrogenesis with unstable pseudo-Goldstone bosons

We propose a new scenario for the formation of asteroid-mass primordial black holes (PBHs). Interacting fractons in 2+1-dimensional quantum field theory

We analyze, in perturbation theory, a theory of weakly interacting fractons and non-relativistic fermions in a 2+1 dimensional Quantum Field Theory. In particular we compute the 1-loop corrections to the self energies and interaction vertex, and calculate the associated 1-loop Renormalization Group flows of the coupling constants. Surprisingly, we find that the fracton-fermion coupling does not flow due to an emergent coordinate-dependent symmetry of the effective Lagrangian, making this model a well-defined quantum field theory. We provide additional discussions on the regularization and renormalization of interacting fractonic theories, as well as both qualitative and quantitative remarks regarding the theory at finite temperature and finite chemical potential.

Evolution of Efimov states

The Efimov phenomenon manifests itself as an emergent discrete scaling symmetry in the quantum three-body problem. In the unitarity limit, it leads to an infinite tower of three-body bound states with energies forming a geometric sequence. Here in this work, we study the evolution of these so-called Efimov states using relativistic scattering theory. We identify them as poles of the three-particle S matrix and trace their trajectories in the complex energy plane as they evolve from virtual states through bound states to resonances. We dial the scattering parameters toward the unitarity limit and observe the emergence of the universal scaling of energies and couplings - a behavior known from the non-relativistic case. Interestingly, we find that Efimov resonances follow unusual, cyclic trajectories accumulating at the three-body threshold and then disappear at some values of the two-body scattering length. We propose a partial resolution to this ?missing states? problem.

Electron– K -phonon interaction in twisted bilayer graphene

We develop an analytic theory to describe the interaction between electrons and K phonons and study its influence on superconductivity in the bare bands of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We find that, due to symmetry and the two-center approximation, only one optical K phonon (160meV) of graphene is responsible for the intervalley electron-phonon interaction. Here, this phonon has recently been found in angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to be responsible for replicas of the TBG flat bands. By projecting the interaction to the TBG flat bands, we perform the full symmetry analysis of the phonon-mediated attractive interaction and pairing channels in the Chern basis, and show that several channels are guaranteed to have gapless order parameters. From the linearized gap equations, we find that the highest T c pairing induced by this phonon is a singlet gapped s-wave inter-Chern-band order parameter, followed closely by a gapless nematic d-wave intra-Chern-band order parameter. We justify these results analytically, using the topological heavy-fermion mapping of TBG which has allowed us to obtain an analytic form of a phonon-mediated attractive interaction and to analytically solve the linearized and T = 0 gap equations. For the intra-Chern-band channel, the nematic state with nodes is shown to be stabilized in the chiral flat-band limit. While the flat-band Coulomb interaction can be screened sufficiently enough—around the Van Hove singularities—to allow for electron-phonon based superconductivity, it is unlikely that this effect can be maintained in the lower density of states excitation bands around the correlated insulator states.
