Collision integrals for the interaction of the ions of nitrogen and oxygen in a plasma at high temperatures and pressures

The corrections to the transport cross-sections and collision integrals for Coulomb interactions arising from the application of realistic interaction energies of the ions of nitrogen and oxygen are investigated. Accurate potential-energy curves from an ab initio electronic-structure calculation and a semiclassical description of the scattering are used to determine the difference between the cross-sections for the real interaction forces and a Coulomb force for large values of the Debye shielding parameter. Graphs of the correction to the diffusion and viscosity-collision integrals are presented for temperatures from about 10,000 K to 150,000 K. This correction can be combined with tabulations of the collision integrals for shielded Coulomb potentials to determine the contribution of N(+)-N(+), N(+)-O(+), and O(+)-O(+) interactions to the transport properties of high-temperature air. Analytical forms are fitted to the calculated results to assist this application.

Free-Free Transitions of the e-H System Inside a Dense Plasma Irradiated by a Laser Field at Very Low Incident-Electron Energies

The free-free transition is studied for an electron-hydrogen atom in ground state when a low-energy electron (external) is injected into hydrogenic plasma in the presence of an external homogenous, monochromatic, and linearly polarized laser field. The effect of plasma screening is considered in the Debye-Huckel approximation. The calculations are performed in the soft photon limit. The incident electron is considered to be dressed by the laser field in a nonperturbative manner by choosing the Volkov solutions in both the initial and final channels. The space part of the scattering wave function for the electron is solved numerically by taking into account the electron exchange. The laser-assisted differential and total cross sections are calculated for single-photon absorption or emission and no-photon exchange in the soft photon limit, the laser intensity being much less than the atomic field intensity. The calculations have been carried out for various values of Debye parameter, ranging from 0.005 to 0.12. A strong suppression is noted in the laser-assisted cross sections as compared to the field-free situation. A significant difference is noted for the singlet and triplet cross sections. The suppression is much more in the triplet states.

The internal caustic structure of illuminated liquid droplets

The internal electric field of an illuminated liquid droplet is studied in detail using both wave theory and ray theory. The internal field obtains its maximum values on the caustics within the droplet. Ray theory is used to determine the equations of these caustics and the density of rays on them. The Debye series expansion of the interior field Mie amplitudes is used to calculate the wave theory version of these caustics. The physical interpretation of the sources of stimulated Raman scattering and fluorescence emission within a liquid droplet is then given.

The free-free transition is studied for an electron-hydrogen in the ground state at low incident energies in the presence of an external homogenous, monochromatic, and linearly polarized laser-field inside a hot dense plasma. The effect of plasma screening is considered in the Debye-Huckel approximation. The calculations are performed in the soft photon limit, assuming that the plasma frequency is much higher than the laser frequency. The incident electron is considered to be dressed by the laser field in a nonperturbative manner by choosing the Volkov solutions in both the initial and final channels. The space part of the scattering wave function for the electron is solved numerically by taking into account the electron exchange. The laser-assisted differential and total cross sections are calculated for single-photon absorption /emission and no photon exchange in the soft photon limit, the laser intensity being much less than the atomic field intensity. The calculations have been carried out for various values of Debye parameter, ranging from 0.005 to 0.12. A strong suppression is noted in the laser-assisted cross sections as compared to the field-free situation. A significant difference is noted for the singlet and triplet cross sections. Liquid-like dynamics in a solid-state lithium electrolyte

Superionic materials represent a regime intermediate between the crystalline and liquid states of matter. Despite the considerable interest in potential applications for solid-state batteries or thermoelectric devices, it remains unclear whether the fast ionic diffusion observed in superionic materials reflects liquid-like dynamics or whether the hops of mobile ions are inherently coupled to more conventional lattice phonons. Here we reveal a crossover from crystalline vibrations to relaxational dynamics of ionic diffusion in the superionic compound Li 6 PS 5 Cl, a candidate solid-state electrolyte. By combining inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron-scattering measurements with first-principles-based machine-learned molecular dynamics simulations, we found that the vibrational density of states in the superionic state strongly deviates from the quadratic behaviour expected from the Debye law of lattice dynamics. The superionic dynamics emerges from overdamped phonon quasiparticles to give rise to a linear density of states characteristic of instantaneous normal modes in the liquid state. Further, we showed that the coupling of lattice phonons with a dynamic breathing of the Li+ diffusion bottleneck enables an order-of-magnitude increase in diffusivity. Thus, our results shed insights into superionics for future energy storage and conversion technologies.

Thermal disorder and phonon softening in the ferroelectric phase transition of lead titanate

We report a molecular dynamics study of ab initio quality of the ferroelectric phase transition in crystalline PbTi⁢O3. We model anharmonicity accurately in terms of potential energy and polarization surfaces trained on density functional theory data with modern machine learning techniques. Our simulations demonstrate that the transition has a strong order-disorder character, in agreement with diffraction experiments, and provide fresh insight into the approach to equilibrium across the phase transition. We find that the emergence and disappearance of the macroscopic polarization is driven by dipolar switching at the nanometer scale. We also computed the infrared optical absorption spectra in both the ferroelectric and the paraelectric phases, finding good agreement with the experimental Raman frequencies. Often, the almost ideal displacive character of the soft mode detected by Raman scattering in the paraelectric phase has been contrasted with the order-disorder character of the transition suggested by diffraction experiments. We settle this issue by showing that the soft mode coexists with a strong Debye relaxation associated with thermal disordering of the dipoles. The Debye relaxation feature is centered at zero frequency and appears near the transition temperature in both the ferroelectric and the paraelectric phases.

Radiation Force Caused by Scattering, Absorption, and Emission of Light by Nonspherical Particles

General formulas for computing the radiation force exerted on arbitrarily oriented and arbitrarily shaped nonspherical particles due to scattering, absorption, and emission of electromagnetic radiation are derived. For randomly oriented particles with a plane of symmetry, the formula for the average radiation force caused by the particle response to external illumination reduces to the standard Debye formula derived from the Lorenz-Mie theory, whereas the average radiation force caused by emission vanishes.

Uncovering the phonon spectra and lattice dynamics of plastically deformable InSe van der Waals crystals

Stacking two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials in a layered bulk structure provides an appealing platform for the emergence of exotic physical properties. As a vdW crystal with exceptional plasticity, InSe offers the opportunity to explore various effects arising from the coupling of its peculiar mechanical behaviors and other physical properties. Here, we employ neutron scattering techniques to investigate the correlations of plastic interlayer slip, lattice anharmonicity, and thermal transport in InSe crystals. Not only are the interlayer slip direction and magnitude well captured by shifts in the Bragg reflections, but we also observe a deviation from the expected Debye behaviour in the heat capacity and lattice thermal conductivity. Combining the experimental data with first-principles calculations, we tentatively attribute the observed evidence of strong phonon-phonon interactions to a combination of a large acoustic-optical frequency resonance and a nesting effect. These findings correlate the macroscopic plastic slip and the microscopic lattice dynamics, providing insights into the mechano-thermo coupling and modulation in 2D vdW materials.

Probing the Short-Distance Structure of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Energy Correlators

Energy-energy correlators (EECs) are promising observables to study the dynamics of jet evolution in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) through its imprint on angular scales in the energy flux of final-state particles. We carry out the first complete calculation of EECs using realistic simulations of high-energy heavy-ion collisions and dissect the different dynamics underlying the final distribution through analyses of jet propagation in a uniform medium. The EECs of γ -jets in heavy-ion collisions are found to be enhanced by the medium response from elastic scatterings instead of induced gluon radiation at large angles. In the meantime, EECs are suppressed at small angles due to energy loss and transverse momentum broadening of jet shower partons. These modifications are further shown to be sensitive to the angular scale of the in-medium interaction, as characterized by the Debye screening mass. Experimental verification and measurement of such modifications will shed light on this scale and the short-distance structure of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions. Influence of plasma screening on high-density inverse bremsstrahlung absorption

A spherical-implosion platform diagnosed with the “beamlets” scattered-light detector provides high sensitivity to the impact of plasma screening on inverse bremsstrahlung absorption. Contrary to the more restrictive screening length suggested previously [D. Turnbull et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 145103 (2023); D. Turnbull et al., Phys. Plasmas 31, 063304 (2024)], the beamlets data indicate that the electron-only Debye length is the relevant screening length for high-density inverse bremsstrahlung absorption. Furthermore, using the updated absorption model, we simulate the OMEGA direct-drive inertial confinement fusion implosion database and show that bang times are well reproduced without any ad hoc multipliers.

Nuclear Fusion Reactions in Deuterated Metals

Nuclear fusion reactions of D-D are examined in an environment comprised of high density cold fuel embedded in metal lattices in which a small fuel portion is activated by hot neutrons. Such an environment provides for enhanced screening of the Coulomb barrier due to conduction and shell electrons of the metal lattice, or by plasma induced by ionizing radiation (γ quanta). We show that neutrons are far more efficient than energetic charged particles, such as light particles (e−, e+) or heavy particles (p, d, α) in transferring kinetic energy to fuel nuclei (D) to initiate fusion processes. It is well-known that screening increases the probability of tunneling through the Coulomb barrier. Electron screening also significantly increases the probability of large- versus small-angle Coulomb scattering of the reacting nuclei to enable subsequent nuclear reactions via tunneling. This probability is incorporated into the astrophysical factor S(E). Aspects of screening effects to enable calculation of nuclear reaction rates are also evaluated, including Coulomb scattering and localized heating of the cold fuel, primary D-D reactions, and subsequent reactions with both the fuel and the lattice nuclei. The effect of screening for enhancement of the total nuclear reaction rate is a function of multiple parameters including fuel temperature and the relative scattering probability between the fuel and lattice metal nuclei. Screening also significantly increases the probability of interaction between hot fuel and lattice nuclei increasing the likelilhood of Oppenheimer-Phillips processes opening a potential route to reaction multiplication. We demonstrate that the screened Coulomb potential of the target ion is determined by the nonlinear Vlasov potential and not by the Debye potential. In general, the effect of screening becomes important at low kinetic energy of the projectile. We examine the range of applicability of both the analytical and asymptotic expressions for the well-known electron screening lattice potential energy Ue, which is valid only for E >> Ue (E is the energy in the center of mass reference frame). We demonstrate that for E ≤ Ue, a direct calculation of Gamow factor for screened Coulomb potential is required to avoid unreasonably high values of the enhancement factor f (E) by the analytical—and more so by the asymptotic—formulas.

Analysis of an induced Langmuir wave by ponderomotive forces and its applicability for plasma diagnostics

We present a numerical study on the electron and ion density perturbation in low-temperature plasmas driven by the frequency detuning of two intense laser beams. Our study is performed in the hydrodynamic regime, which becomes applicable when the plasma grating period induced by the beating of the laser beams is greater than the Debye length and collective processes such as plasma oscillations can be excited. Our findings show a resonance in electron density perturbation as the frequency detuning approaches a value consistent with the Bohm–Gross dispersion relation in low- and high-pressure plasmas. We discuss the potential of this resonance as a diagnostic tool for precisely measuring electron temperature and density in low-temperature plasmas through coherent scattering.

Direct evidence of the effect of a moderate external magnetic field on stimulated Raman scattering in the kinetic regime

We present results from an experiment carried out at the OMEGA-EP laser facility that investigated the effect of a perpendicular magnetic field on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and report the first direct measurement of magnetic mitigation of SRS. A 13-T magnetic field generated by pulsed-power coils was imposed on a gas jet plasma, and a novel three-picket interaction beam was used to explore SRS reflectivity for several plasma conditions within single shots. The time-resolved backscattered light shows that SRS was mitigated by the external 13-T magnetic field in the kinetic regime (kλ D ∼ 0.3, where k is the electron plasma wave's wavenumber and λ D is electron Debye length) and at a density of n e /n cr ∼ 0.10. On the other hand, we also measured an enhancement of SRS reflectivity at lower density (n e /n cr < 0.08). We discuss experimental results in the context of magnetohydrodynamic and particle-in-cell simulations that scan SRS dynamics for a variety of plasma conditions. While the experimental evidence of SRS mitigation validates prior work on the kinetic simulation of SRS in an external magnetic field, we also find that other mechanisms such as SRS rescatter can lead to an enhancement of measured SRS reflectivity in simulations of parameters relevant to our experiment.

Aerosol-induced laser breakdown thresholds - Effect of resonant particles

Laser intensity thresholds for the onset of stimulated Raman scattering and the breakdown in resonant micron-sized droplets are reduced to below those for nonresonant droplets by a factor of about 3. This reduction is most likely caused by the enhancement of electromagnetic energy (photon) densities within the droplets over and above that in nonresonant droplets. The magnitude of the threshold reduction for breakdown is consistent with the assertion that: (1) input (pump) wavelength resonances that initiate plasma have cavity Qs of about 10 exp 4; and (2) finite regions of high-electromagnetic-energy density within the droplet, with dimensions of the order of the Debye length, are required to initiate plasma.

Resolving the mystery of electron perpendicular temperature spike in the plasma sheath

A large family of plasmas has collisional mean-free-path much longer than the non-neutral sheath width, which scales with the plasma Debye length. The plasmas, particularly the electrons, assume strong temperature anisotropy in the sheath. The temperature in the sheath flow direction (Te∥) is lower and drops toward the wall as a result of the decompressional cooling by the accelerating sheath flow. The electron temperature in the transverse direction of the flow field (Te⊥) not only is higher but also spikes up in the sheath. This abnormal behavior of Te⊥ spike is found to be the result of a negative gradient of the parallel heat flux of transverse degrees of freedom (qes) in the sheath. The non-zero heat flux qes is induced by pitch-angle scattering of electrons via either their interaction with self-excited electromagnetic waves in a nearly collisionless plasma or Coulomb collision in a collisional plasma, or both in the intermediate regime of plasma collisionality.

Ab initio study of mechanical and thermal properties of GeTe-based and PbSe-based high-entropy chalcogenides

GeTe-based and PbSe-based high-entropy compounds have outstanding thermoelectric (TE) performance and crucial applications in mid and high temperatures. Recently, the optimization of TE performance of high-entropy compounds has been focused on reducing thermal conductivity by strengthening the phonon scattering process to improve TE performance. We report a first-principles investigation on nine GeTe-based high-entropy chalcogenide solid solutions constituted of eight metallic elements (Ag, Pb, Sb, Bi, Cu, Cd, Mn, and Sn) and 13 PbSe-based high-entropy chalcogenide solid solutions: Pb 0.99-y Sb 0.012 Sn y Se 1-2x Te x S x (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, and y = 0) and Pb 0.99-y Sb 0.012 Sn y Se 1-2x Te x S x (y = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25 and x = 0.25). We have investigated the mechanical properties focusing on Debye temperature (Θ D ), thermal conductivity (κ), Grüneisen parameter (γ α ), dominant phonon wavelength (λ dom ), and melting temperature (T m ). We find that the lattice thermal conductivity is significantly reduced when GeTe is alloyed into the following compositions: Ge 0.75 Sb 0.13 Pb 0.12 Te, Ge 0.61 Ag 0.11 Sb 0.13 Pb 0.12 Bi 0.01 Te, and Ge 0.61 Ag 0.11 Sb 0.13 Pb 0.12 Mn 0.05 Bi 0.01 Te. This reduction is due to the mass increase and strain fluctuations. The results also show that Ge 0.61 Ag 0.11 Sb 0.13 Pb 0.12 Bi 0.01 Te solid solution has the lowest Young’s modulus (30.362 GPa), bulk and shear moduli (18.626 and 12.359 GPa), average sound velocity (1653.128 m/sec), Debye temperature (151.689 K), lattice thermal conductivity (0.574 W.m –1 .K –1 ), dominant phonon wavelength (0.692 Å), and melting temperature (535.91 K). Moreover, Ge 0.61 Ag 0.11 Sb 0.13 Pb 0.12 Bi 0.01 Te has the highest Grüneisen parameter with a reduced and temperature-independent lattice thermal conductivity. The positive correlation between Θ D and κ is revealed. Alloying of PbSe-based high-entropy by Sb, Sn, Te, and S atoms at the Se and Pb sites resulted in much higher shear strains resulted in the reduction of phonon velocity, a reduced Θ D , and a lower lattice thermal conductivity.

Beyond the Debye–Hückel limit: Toward a general theory for concentrated electrolytes

The phenomenon of underscreening in concentrated electrolyte solutions leads to a larger decay length of the charge–charge correlation than the prediction of Debye–Hückel (DH) theory and has found a resurgence of both theoretical and experimental interest in the chemical physics community. To systematically understand and investigate this phenomenon in electrolytes requires a theory of concentrated electrolytes to describe charge–charge correlations beyond the DH theory. We review the theories of electrolytes that can transition from the DH limit to concentrations where charge correlations dominate, giving rise to underscreening and the associated Kirkwood Transitions (KTs). In this perspective, we provide a conceptual approach to a theoretical formulation of electrolyte solutions that exploits the competition between molecular-informed short-range (SR) and long-range interactions. We demonstrate that all deviations from the DH limit for real electrolyte solutions can be expressed through a single function ΣQ that can be determined both theoretically and numerically. Importantly, ΣQ can be directly related to the details of SR interactions and, therefore, can be used as a tool to understand how differences in representations of interaction can influence collective effects. The precise function form of ΣQ can be inferred through a Gaussian field theory of both the number and charge densities. The resulting formulation is validated by experiment and can accurately describe the collective phenomenon of screening in concentrated bulk electrolytes. Importantly, the Gaussian field theory predictions of the screening lengths appear to be less than ∼1 nm at concentrations above KTs.
