SAO mission support software and data standards, version 1.0

This document defines the software developed by the SAO AXAF Mission Support (MS) Program and defines standards for the software development process and control of data products generated by the software. The SAO MS is tasked to develop and use software to perform a variety of functions in support of the AXAF mission. Software is developed by software engineers and scientists, and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software is used either directly or customized through the use of scripts to implement analysis procedures. Software controls real-time laboratory instruments, performs data archiving, displays data, and generates model predictions. Much software is used in the analysis of data to generate data products that are required by the AXAF project, for example, on-orbit mirror performance predictions or detailed characterization of the mirror reflection performance with energy.

(abstract) Towards Ancillary Data Standards

NASA's SPICE information system for archiving, distributing, and accessing spacecraft navigation, orientation, and other ancillary data is described. A proposal is made for the further evolution of this concept to an internationally useful standard, to be.

Characterizing Digital Camera Systems: A Prelude to Data Standards

This viewgraph presentation profiles: 1) Digital imaging systems; 2) Specifying a digital imagery product; and 3) Characterization of data acquisition systems. Advanced large array digital imaging systems are routinely being used. Digital imagery guidelines are being developed by ASPRS and ISPRS. Guidelines and standards are of little use without standardized characterization methods. Characterization of digital camera systems is important for supporting digital imagery guidelines. Specifications are characterized in the lab and/or the field. Laboratory characterization is critical for optimizing and defining performance. In-flight characterization is necessary for an end-to-end system test.

Data standards for the Space Station Freedom Program

The Space Station Freedom Program (SSFP) plans to utilize several of the Recommendations of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). This paper discusses four aspects of the effect of the Advanced Orbiting Systems (AOS) within the SSFP which are of special interest. It is first noted that the AOS is a new Recommendation of the CCSDS, and the SSFP has been in the unique position of playing a major role in the development of the Recommendation. Interactions of the process by the Program and the CCSDS are shown. Second, the specific application of the CCSDS AOS Recommendation to each of the four SSFP flight elements and the resulting sets of services provided on each element are discussed. Third, the usefulness and importance of the AOS Recommendation within the context of the international nature of the SSFP and as part of the generation of interorganizational support agreements within NASA are discussed. Finally, the current status of baselining various CCSDS Recommendations, especially the AOS, into the SSFP requirements structure is given.

Data Standards and the Synthesis of Magnetograms

A key component of future models of coronal evolution will be the high resolution vector magnetograms that drive the models. Much of this data will have limited field of view, and so will need to be supplemented from other sources, particularly when a global context is needed. I will discuss our plans to develop a tool capable of synthesizing magnetograms from multiple sources. This will rely heavily on the CCMC's KAMELEON data formatter and interpolator.

Specifications for a Federal Information Processing Standard Data Dictionary System

The development of a software specification that Federal agencies may use in evaluating and selecting data dictionary systems (DDS) is discussed. To supply the flexibility needed by widely different applications and environments in the Federal Government, the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) specifies a core DDS together with an optimal set of modules. The focus and status of the development project are described. Functional specifications for the FIPS DDS are examined for the dictionary, the dictionary schema, and the dictionary processing system. The DDS user interfaces and DDS software interfaces are discussed as well as dictionary administration.
