System Applications Software Development and Testing for the Spaceport Command and Control System

Known as "America's Spaceport," one of Kennedy Space Center's (KSC) primary responsibilities is the successful preparation for and launch of rockets into space. KSC's Engineering Software Branch has been tasked with creating a new command and control system that will provide check-out and launch control for future rockets and spacecraft. While work on the software began several years ago, development is ongoing and the operators who use the software on a daily basis have requested several features to improve their user experience. My internship in the fall of 2018 involved developing the source code and unit tests for two of these requested features: "Display Data with Persistence" (DDP) and "Save Events Button" (SEB). DDP's primary goal is to aid with ergonomics. Currently, users must press-and-hold on the mouse button to display information about points on a data plot. Once DDP is integrated, users will have the ability to double-click on a data plot to display that same information with persistence. Independent from DDP, the SEB provides users the ability to take information about different events that occur in the control system and save that data into a simple Comma Separated File (.csv) file format for easier analysis at a future time.

Software for Displaying High-Frequency Test Data

An easy-to-use, intuitive computer program was written to satisfy a need of test operators and data requestors to quickly view and manipulate high-frequency test data recorded at the East and West Test Areas at Marshall Space Flight Center. By enabling rapid analysis, this program makes it possible to reduce times between test runs, thereby potentially reducing the overall cost of test operations. The program can be used to perform quick frequency analysis, using multiple fast- Fourier-transform windowing and amplitude options. The program can generate amplitude-versus-time plots with full zoom capabilities, frequency-component plots at specified time intervals, and waterfall plots (plots of spectral intensity versus frequency at successive small time intervals, showing the changing frequency components over time). There are options for printing of the plots and saving plot data as text files that can be imported into other application programs. The program can perform all of the aforementioned plotting and plot-data-handling functions on a relatively inexpensive computer; other software that performs the same functions requires computers with large amounts of power and memory.

PAVC Gridded 20m Alaska NGEE Tier3 PFTs v1.0

These 20-meter spatial resolution gridded products provide per-pixel fractional cover (%) of Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE) Arctic Plant Functional Types (PFTs) Tier 3 across Alaska, north of the boreal treeline. The products were developed for the NGEE Arctic project, which is improving Arctic vegetation representation and parameterization of the E3SM Land Model. This dataset includes 8 files containing fractional cover for NGEE Tier 3 PFTs (https://data.ess-dive.lbl.gov/view/doi:10.15485/2529470): (1) bryophytes; (2) lichens; (3) non-vascular plants, i.e., the sum of lichens and bryophytes; (4) deciduous shrubs, (5) evergreen shrubs, (6) forbs, (7) graminoids, and a non-PFT class, (8) litter. Each pixel contains the percent cover (expressed as a fraction of total ground cover) that was predicted by random-forest regression models. The random-forest models were trained on cover data collected at 978 plots from 2010 to 2021, of which are archived in the Pan-Arctic Vegetation Cover (PAVC) database (https://data.ess-dive.lbl.gov/datasets/doi:10.15485/2483557). The plot cover was linked to 20-meter spatial resolution, satellite-derived predictor variables: Sentinel-2 spectra and Sentinel-1 polarizations averaged over the 2019 growing season, as well as topographical features derived from ArcticDEM. Then, spatio-temporally anomalous plot data that introduced large variability to the regression outcomes were dropped using the Cook’s distance outlier detection method, and the models were re-created using high-quality plots and their associated satellite derived explanatory variables per each PFT. The correlations between plot-observed and satellite-derived fractional cover for all PFTs were well correlated (R2 = 0.69–0.95 and 0.5 for litter) and had low RMSE bias (0.02–0.11). This research was performed as a part of the NGEE Arctic project. The NGEE Arctic project was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

Investigations of medium wavelength magnetic anomalies in the Eastern Pacific using Magsat data

Processing continued on the data set covering the first three months of the mission. Orbits were selected over a specified range of longitude and latitude and those orbits falling within the geographical boundaries were stored on a disk and a listing made. To verify the quality of the data, plots were made showing altitude vs latitude, anomalous field vs latitude, and corrected anomalous field vs latitude. Results of the plotting showed that: (1) data from the first day of the mission are not usable because they are too noisy; (2) some orbits contain spikes, no doubt a processing error on the tape; (3) some orbits contain a 20 deg region in latitude, offset roughly 30 nT from the rest of the anomalous field profiles; and (4) the correlation between the adjacent orbits is poor. Even the new ring current coefficients provided with a later, corrected set of data tapes did not not yield the desired correlations.

Parallel line analysis: multifunctional software for the biomedical sciences

An easy to use, interactive FORTRAN program for analyzing the results of parallel line assays is described. The program is menu driven and consists of five major components: data entry, data editing, manual analysis, manual plotting, and automatic analysis and plotting. Data can be entered from the terminal or from previously created data files. The data editing portion of the program is used to inspect and modify data and to statistically identify outliers. The manual analysis component is used to test the assumptions necessary for parallel line assays using analysis of covariance techniques and to determine potency ratios with confidence limits. The manual plotting component provides a graphic display of the data on the terminal screen or on a standard line printer. The automatic portion runs through multiple analyses without operator input. Data may be saved in a special file to expedite input at a future time.
