Review and Assessment of Available Data Regarding the Behavior of Sodium Aerosols

Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in advanced (non-light water) reactor designs, including sodium fast reactors (SFRs). In parallel, multiple efforts are underway to develop risk informed, performance-based licensing pathways for advanced reactors. However, such licensing approaches depend on the accuracy of the associated safety assessments, including mechanistic source term (MST) analyses. Unlike historical source term assessments, which utilizes bounding estimates of radionuclide release, MSTs attempt to realistically estimate the transport and retention of radionuclides for specific transient scenarios. For SFR MST analyses, the behavior of radionuclide aerosols is a key factor, as noted in recent studies. Due to the use of sodium as the primary coolant, many potential transient scenarios involve the release of radionuclide aerosols in conjunction with sodium aerosols. For such scenarios, sodium may be the dominant aerosol species, compared to that of released radionuclides. Therefore, understanding the behavior of sodium aerosols is particularly important to an accurate assessment of aerosol transport. Although many approaches to aerosol modeling exist, it is vital to establish their capabilities in evaluating sodium aerosol behavior for SFR analyses.

Shuttle Imaging Radar-A information and data availability

The performance characteristics of the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-A), carried aloft on the STS-2 flight, are described and the results of its initial use are evaluated. The SIR-A is an SAR system operated at 1278 MHz (L-band), i.e., a wavelength of 23 cm. A seven panel antenna 9.4 m long was used, and scans were performed at a 50 deg angle of incidence to the center of a 50 km swath. Resolution is 40 m, and imagery is generated on a scale of 1:500,000. Sample images of a Brasilian island and the California coast are provided. Comparisons of the SIR-A imagery with Seasat SAR composite imagery demonstrate that the SIR-A is more sensitive to local roughness and only slightly dependent on terrain slope.

A model of Saturn's magnetic field based on all available data

A model of Saturn's magnetic field, called Saturn Pioneer Voyager (SPV), is developed on the basis of an analysis of three sets of data: those from the Pioneer 11, the Voyager 1, and the Voyager 2 magnetometers. It is shown that the SPV model fits the data observed between 1.3 and 8.0 Saturn radii from the planet's center with a 1.13 percent weighted rms average of the percent differences between the observed and modeled fields, which is substantially better than the fits yielded by any of the previous models.

RAID-S Technical Overview: Raid 4 and 5-Compliant Hardware and Software Functionality Improves Data Availability Through Use of XOR-Capable Disks in an Integrated Cached Disk Array

The purpose of this paper is to provide a technical description of redundant array of independent disks - Symmetrix (RAID-S). It is intended to give the reader an understanding of how RAID-S is architected and implemented in the EMC Symmetrix 3000/5000 series integrated cached disk array. Topics include RAID-S taxonomy, configuration considerations, operational characteristics, performance, and implementation guidelines.

The GLAS Polar Orbiting Lidar Experiment: First Year Results and Available Data

The first polar orbiting satellite lidar instrument, the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS), was launched in 2003 and is approaching six months of data operations. As part of the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) project, the GLAS instrument is intended as a laser sensor fulfilling complementary requirements for several earth science disciplines including atmospheric and surface applications on the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite. In this paper we present examples of atmospheric measurement results and explain access to data for the international science community.

A Review and Comparison of Mouse and Rat Responses to Micro Gravity, Hyper Gravity and Simulated Models of Partial Gravity; Species Differences, Gaps in the Available Data, and Consideration of the Advantages and Caveats of Each Model for Spaceflight

Laboratory strains of mice and rat are widely used to study mammalian responses to stimulus, and both have been studied under a variety of gravity conditions, including space flight. We compared results obtained from exposure to spaceflight and microgravity, hyper gravity via centrifugation, earth gravity, and models of simulated partial gravity (hind-limb unloading and partial weight bearing treatments). We examined the reported changes in survival, body mass, circadian rhythm (body temperature and activity levels), behavior, bone, muscle, immune, cardio-vasculature, vestibular, reproduction and neonate survival, microbiome, and the visual system. Not all categories have published data for both species, some have limited data, and there are variations in experiment design that allow for only relative comparisons to be considered. The data reveal species differences in both the level of gravity required to obtain a response, degree of response, and in temporal expression of responses. Examination of the data across the gravity levels allows consideration of the hypothesis that gravitational responses follow a continuum, and organ specific differences are noted. In summary, we present advantages and caveats of each model system as pertains to gravitational biology research and identify gaps in our knowledge of how these mammals respond to gravity.
